40gr reloader 7, held down with a thin paper wad, 405gr cast bullet. One of my favorites for my 1875 C Sharp's rifle. For fun put 10 gr unique behind that bullet and enjoy a light load that will still put them in at 100yds.

For as much testing as I have done on game with all different loads in the 1895, I truly believe that trapdoor load, core-lokt , and equivalents really can take most game with a good shot. Though the hotter loads are fun to mess with.

I was lucky enough to go on a bison hunt a few years ago and I wanted to test out the standard 405g in a hard cast, mine were right at 1600 FPS. On a 1200 lb bison it went maybe 20-30 yards after being hit at at roughly 75-80 yards. I was impressed to say the least, and it just reinforced that idea that the old setups still are very effective.

I have the Henry X in 45/70 and I love it. Hands down my favorite most versatile rifle. I hand load for it with the FTX bullets and about 2k fps velocity. So far I have only used it on wild hog and it certainly does the job. I've taken 2 and dropped them in their tracks.

I very rarely shoot it but I have the great, great,great uncle of the Henry. I have a Winchester 1886 45-70 with an octagon barrel and full length tube magazine I checked the serial number and found it was made in 1895. I can get kinda hard in your shoulder because it has the original curved butt plate.

The 45-70 is a fantastic cartridge, and I agree that it is very versatile option. You got a really nice rifle in the Henry Model X. Years ago when I worked as a PH in the Klaserie, I had a number of american clients come to hunt large African Game with the 45-70. From first hand experience, we quickly started to limit shots to under 75m when shooting anything larger than Kudu, and Cape Buffalo to under 30m. Lots of the ammo had dismal penetration, never saw one of them pass through a buffalo cow, let alone through a bull.

We've done a couple of articles re the 45-70, one was just this past summer after an Idaho bear hunt in which three of us had Marlin 45-70's. The other was a couple of years ago, loading the 45-70 for hunting. A quick search of the Ultimate Reloader web site will get you to the written articles and the videos. Cantilever mount and a 2.5x scope I have found to be the money for our dark woods and still being fast and no worry of scope bite even for a new user with heavy handloads. At 150 yards and in the 2.5x fixed seems to be plenty and ultra light. Worked up a load 15 or so years ago, still my go to for bear hunting 405g hard cast at 1550 fps. Though have worked up some 350’s, 380’s, to the same point of impact to allow swapping and no change in sighting. Newest load using 405’s northforks at 1750 FPS which did an outstanding exit hole on this years black bear. Just wish I could retrieve them for more data collection out of a live animal. @@guyminer3168 now that I think about it, there’s a mount I’ve been using for years and it was designed for the same 2.5x leupold you liked to use. I’m not sure how to link a photo to show you, but it allows that specific scope with the generous eye relief to get it just forward of the hammer. With dovetail rings, super low ones, it’s my favorite setup and still carries well without the scope coming back like a traditional, but also not forward over the barrel like a scout. Ashley Performance is the company, I have a bunch of these specifically for a bunch of my Marlins.

Model X 45-70 is my favorite rifle. Your setup is nice, quite a bit better than mine. No suppressor as the state I live in tries hard not to be a part of the US. I have a monstrum optic which actually holds a zero on this beast. A load I have enjoyed shooting is 47.3 grains of Accurate 2015 pushing a 350 gr. Acme Hi-Tek bullet. Recoil is solid not as sharp as the Hornady FTX stuff, and it makes steel dance nicely. Only recently bought a chrono but haven't had a chance to get out to shoot with the fire restrictions around here to share any data.

.45-70 is an extremely voluminous case. That bad ES on the subsonic is because the case fill is basically non-existent! I can't image the grain load, unless it's something like trail boss. My lowest plinking round is around 33 gr. IMR4198 and the case sounds like a salt shaker.
@guyminer3168

@@guyminer3168 it's a Lee mold. 500 grain and it takes a gas check so you can actually get pretty spicy with it before accuracy takes a hit. It's great for hogs but anything over about 75 yards you can watch the bullet drop like a football.

I'd highly recommend looking at Hodgdon's 45-70 rifle data. They have it broken down into three different power levels for Trapdoor loads (the most mild), Levergun loads for the Marlin 1895 & similar, and "modern rifle" loads - for the Ruger Number One and strong converted bolt actions. They've got pressure data included with their load data. Their annual manual also contains that data. It's mostly what I use to guide my 45-70 handloading.

I am not sure if Versatility is the right term but I would love to have one of these. I will probably step down to a 45 colt due to the cost of ammo. I keep about 500 rounds per weapon but I am very conservitive with it and only shoot for a reason and not just to hear the gun go off. As an Army Veteran who is 275 pounds and 78in tall. I really like the 45/70 but a box of standard 45 "long" colt is a little cheaper than a box of 45/70.
