I love that even though you went out of your way to make sure that these recipes were high protein, that isn’t the only thing here! The focus is really on the quality of the ingredients and the flavor they bring. It’s so refreshing to have high protein recipes that are more about the dish you are going to taste vs how high you can make a protein amount in every serving. Also love that you provide the nutritional info in a separate post and don’t say the specific numbers in the video…so much more enjoyable to watch!

Just be sure you do track your macros to make sure tat you get the minimum of 0.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. If you try to build muscle 0.8 grams/pound of BW is recommended. If you only ate the most protein rich vegan sources and not the less protein dense ones you would still need 2.8 pounds of cooked lentils per day if you weigh 150 pounds. Her advice to not track your macros is questionable honestly. Peace.

Recipe 2 on here looked great! I can't be the only person who can't stand tofu. I made a vegan quiche many years back using a recipe from a vegan blogger, whose recipes I absolutely love. I decided to give tofu a chance. I made a beautiful quiche, took one bite, almost vomited, and trashed the entire thing. There's got to be a better way to get a lot more vegan recipes than always using tofu.

@harmonicaveronica2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people will say that tofu is bland and will take on any flavor, but I've always found that to be inaccurate. Tofu has a pretty neutral flavor in my opinion, but that flavor is strong. And if you happen to not like it, you're going to taste it even more strongly in any dish it's in! In dishes like a stir fry where tofu would be in solid pieces, I often find tempeh to be a good substitute. It's still made of soy but has a very different flavor and texture to tofu - it's a little bitter before it's properly cooked, but when it's fried or baked so it browns it has a very lovely nutty flavor and it looses the bitterness. I like it better than tofu personally, but I do still like tofu. Alternatively, chickpeas are excellent because they're a little firmer than other beans and tend to hold their shape, especially if you cook them yourself from dry instead of buying canned. When it comes to a puree, any well-cooked bean could do in a savory context, but any kind of white beans are going to provide the closest color match

Great video, thank you ! I would be interested to see more season based recipes. Most of us are pretty uneducated about seasonal vegetables (since most are around all year, we don't really care anymore if we buy strawberries and tomatoes and eggplant in winter...), plus I found it's very difficult to be inventive without adding vegetables that are out of season... (especially in winter, unless you like soup)
@harmonicaveronica2 жыл бұрын
One of the best ways to learn is to garden - I knew very little about seasonality until two years ago when I signed up for a community garden plot! I also signed up for a CSA box which is a less intensive way to learn, haha. We get a box of veggies right from the farm, harvested within a day or two of receiving it. It comes along with a little newsletter about what's in it. I do buy stuff that's out of season in the winter, but I try to rely more on frozen, canned, and storage veggies (e.g. potatoes, onions, squash) that was harvested in season! That way they taste a lot better. I don't find myself missing the freshness very much because it's so cold and I have no desire to eat raw veggies when I could instead eat them warm and cooked
@73cidalia2 жыл бұрын
@@harmonicaveronica, Yep, when you live in a colder climate like Canada (or the Netherlands), eating seasonally is not feasible all year outside of frozen vegetables and neither is gardening in winter. But in the warmer months, it’s something to strive for.

the chipotle bean spread reminded me, for a sweet alternative there's this japanese bean paste called anko, which is usually made from azuki (but cannellini or black bean also work well!) mixed with sugar. it's great on toast (but might have a bit of a dry mouthfeel, so in that case layer with vegan butter!) or in traditional japanese sweets like mochi :)

I love your channel and I’ve gotten lots of inspiration as a new vegan. One thing I’ve noted and find rather unusual is that you do not consume the green part of the leek. That is also edible and used in some of the most savoury meals. We use the white bulbous part for soups and the green part as a condiment in many other meals. If we had to throw away a part of the leek it would generally be the white part which doesn’t have much flavour when compared to the green. Maybe you’d like to give it a try? 🤷🏻♀️ Just something interesting I thought I would share.

Not a good idea to avoid tracking your macros though. You won't know if you are deficient before its too late if you don't. If your goal is to get the recommended 0.8 grams/pound of bodyweight per day then you need to track it. Lentils being one of the most protein dense vegan sources only contain 9% protein(cooked) meaning you would need 2.8 pounds of cooked lentils per day at 150 pounds body weight. Peace.
@TheaTheGenius2 жыл бұрын
A good protip is to always add 2-3 different protein sources to every meal. For example, I always replace rice in every recipe with some kind of bean if possible. Plus, if I don't think I'm getting enough I bump it up with some high protein snacks.
@TheaTheGenius2 жыл бұрын
@@plantatheist5883 As someone with an ED, I completely understand her recommendation not to track. Its so easy to start obsessing over macros and calories, and stop seeing food as food. I know that I personally, destroyed my relationship with food the instant I started tracking. Everything became a numbers game, and I literally stopped eating for flavor, and nutritional content, and only ate because of the calories and macros. I'm still trying to go back to the attitude I had before, but its difficult to recover. Sadia's channel has been a great help, and her recipes and general attitude make me believe that one day, I can eat freely again.

@@TheaTheGenius What if I told you macros are a part of the nutritional content? I understand from one perspective why it makes sense to not track calories and I agree it is easy to develop unhealthy habit this way. Studies does, however, not support this idea. Most eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia nervosa are associated with prior history of abuse. Telling someone on a restrictive diet (veganism) to not track protein is however, unethical. You know that vegetables are less protein dense than meat. If you downplay the need to consume quality protein and at the same time discourage your followers from tracking protein, you are setting them up to develop deficiencies.

@@plantatheist5883 wow, didn't know that macros are a part of nutrition! Revelation right there! /s/ Sadia acknowledges multiple times that vegan food is not as nutritionally dense as animal sources. She RECCOMENDS not to track, but people are free to do so, if they choose. Her website clearly outlines the nutritional content of every meal, and she encourages people swap ingredients to meet their needs. Plus, she always stresses the plate method, to make sure people eat balanced meals. It's a rough tracking method that doesn't place emphasis on every individual gram. For the average person it's a good way to eat more healthily. Also, thanks for generalizing EDs into one giant lump. You're right, every single one of us are just broken abused souls who either have anorexia or bulimia. Can't possibly be any other reason someone would develop an ED.

For making the pancakes I've used both firm and medium firm tofu (instead of silken), but then I have basically just doubled the tofu and liquid part of the recipe and had the dry part be regular, the batter turns out quite thick but still delicious.
