Hi Marco, what paints were you using for the robe washes (darkish purple & yellow). If they're oils is there an equivalent acrylic type of paint that could achieve similar results? Thanks.

It wilds me that there's still residual resistance to airbrushes as a tool out there. We spend hundreds of dollars on models in this hobby, often on models that languish unpainted, but we won't spend a relatively small amount on a great tool that will let you do things only achievable by hours of painstaking brushwork.

What I find even stranger is the discourse about using an Airbrush to paint miniatures. Some people in the hobby view it as cheating.
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM Жыл бұрын
@@Trinioutsider34 yeah it's an old thing coming from the glorification of super smooth glazed blendings of late '90 early 2000 (when we discovered glazes 😅) and the envy of old school wargamers used to spend years to paint a single army 🤣 The "you have to suffer for your hobby" it's still a thing in small pockets! But it's just a tool that's also not that easy and automatic to use!

I’m new to airbrushing, matter of fact, new to painting minis. So the terror of using airbrush is still fresh in my mind. I absolutely love airbrush now, but it took me 2 years to open the airbrush box that I purchased. I’m not usually reluctant to try new things or being intimidating, but there was something about of airbrushing made me so resistant to it. It’s still early in my journey, and I have my noobs moments and struggles but opening that box and plugging that compressors I have to say have made me really happy.

I mean, in my case it’s my living conditions. I can only devote so much time to paint during the day, which doesn’t give me a lot of time to set up take down and clean an airbrush during my breaks from work, and when I get off work I live in an apartment so a compressor is too loud to use, and the quiet ones are out of my budget range 😅

@filippobosi
@filippobosi Жыл бұрын
Ciao Marco! Great video, the footage in (almost) real time really helps understanding your process and the search for efficiency. I'll take the chance to leave this comment with the hope that either you or other fellow painters can help me with a small issue I'm having with odourless thinner. My usual process is do basic colour blocking with acrylics then stain the miniature with oil paints or use an oil wash to shade recesses. From time to time, it has happened that regardless of the thinning ratio the oil wash would "rip away" the acrylic layer underneath. In the beginning I thought it was me being too hasty or rough with the brush, but then I started wondering about the odourless thinner because it happens particularly with one specific bottle. It's a cheap no-brand product that I got in an arts store, if it helps. This does not happen with "Tintoretto" 100% vegetal o.t., "Maimeri" o.t. and the traditional linseed oil/white spirit mix. In your experience, have you ever had similar issues - with odourless thinners of different brands having different solving power? Could this cheap odourless thinner just be straight white spirit/odourless turpentine - hence super aggressive? I understand it is a very generic question, but sometimes the labeling of products doesn't really help and I'm trying to troubleshoot before I eff up more paintjobs :D

I didn't see a pre-oil sealing coat in this video, but maybe you've covered this in a previous video and I don't remember or didn't see it. Are you locking the acrylics down with a coat of any particular varnish before you use the oils? It almost doesn't look like it, as the acrylic metallics seem to have their full gleam when the oils go on! What (if anything) is protecting the acrylics?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM Жыл бұрын
I didn't use any varnish! Acrylics don't really need any protection (white spirit and oils don't have any chemical effect on dry acrylics, so they suffer only a bit of physical stress coming from the rubbing/cleaning stage) and I want the oils to soak into the previous layer to obtain the complex colour mixing so I don't put it barriers between them. I use varnish only to obtain particular effectt, like for example using gloss varnish to obtain crisp, super precise panel lines with clean surroundings!

Hey marco…. When you were going through the steps to remove the oil wash you used cotton buds and make up sticks. We’re they both used with white spirits and for the purpose of removing the oil paint or was the makeup sticks also used to blend/feather the oils?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM Жыл бұрын
Hi! You got it perfectly! I usually use q-tips to do the heavy lifting and remove the biggest part of the excess of paint (they are cheap and expendable, but not very precise), with and/or without white spirit depending on the impact I want to leave on the acrylic layer, and the make-up sponges for a quick general blending and refining (no solvent here); the soft consistency of the sponge gently blends and feathers the remaining micro excess creating the final smoothness and a lovely more mat finish!

@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM Жыл бұрын
There's no precise rule for that and it depends on how much interaction/staining you want between the acrylic and oil layers. In this particular case, knowing how staining these brands and tones are, I clean the first model immediately after the wash on the last model of the bunch! You can see how wet the paint is on the boss before the first pass with the q-tip
