Reynard was really getting unintentionally fucked by Mark, in the first reflect she shouldn't have been able to because she used an attack of opportunity, then the spell will only activate if YOU hit a creature while in throwing the bolt back Guanlin hit him so it wouldn't have activated and then he doesn't get to double the huntersmark with a natural 20 which would have made it hit

If Guan Yin only has one reaction a turn, she used in on her attack of opportunity against Reynard, and so she couldn't have caught the crossbow bolt on the first attack.

She doesn't have legendary actions or reactions, she's not a boss, she's just a high level monk. The reason she resisted the stun is because that is a monk feature that Jiutou also has. Gotta spend Ki points on it, but there's nothing 'legendary' about it. Guan Yin is not a legendary creature, she's just a high level monk.

I would have ruled that she couldn't reflect a projectile hitting at natural 20, for ranged weapons that's a straight up bullseye vs a technique he'd seen several times already, and thematically it would have been good too after her taunt

Also that was a pretty filthy ruling on Reynards Ensnaring Strike. The wording is 'the next time you hit a creature', and he did hit her. Deflect Missile reduces the damage, it doesn't negate any secondary effects, nor does it reflect that effect back at the attacker, since it is a ranged monk weapon attack not a copy of the initial attack. Guan Yin should have made the save not Reynard.

Thanks, but I have my PHB pretty much always within arms reach. I know you can return the projectile, you may want to re-read what I wrote. What I was saying is that all Ensnaring Strike requires is a successful attack roll, not that you deal any amount of damage, meaning Deflect Missiles has no bearing over the spell taking effect. To make it clearer, both Deflect Missiles and Ensnaring Strike require the attack made to be successful, why was Guan Yin unaffected by the spell, yet able to use Deflect Missiles? In the end it's not that big a deal, as the result likely would have been the same, as Reynard made his save and Guan Yin, having proficiency in all saves, more than likely would have also. But as Mark is a DM fond of the saying: "every little bit counts", being forced to make a save against an effect that should be affecting your enemy seems pretty significant in comparison to 1 or 2 points of damage.

Ensnaring strike would not have went off for her. Any way you read the spell, it wouldn't hurt reynard. Either it goes off when she touched the bolt, or it acts as a miss. Seriously unfair calls against reynard this session.

Reynard shouldn't have been affected by ensnaring strike. The spell states the next time YOU (meaning the caster) hit a creature with a weapon attack. She used deflect missiles, which states that after catching the missile you can throw it back by making an unarmed strike. So she made the attack roll that hit Reynard, so ensnaring strike wouldn't have activated.

Actually, monk deflect missiles when he/she is hit. So, monk would catch missle, get affected by ensnaring strike and then throw back just a missle.

If it is a house rule then Marks been pretty flip floppy on that, because I have heard him say either way. Considering the Rogue assassin sub class is built off the concept that you double ALL dice, and to lesser degree a Paladin's divine smite, that would be pretty frustrating as a player to have that restriction placed on you for no reason at all. I had just assumed Mark got mixed up one time and continued to misremember that rule since.

srevdar I kinda assumed you'd just double the final damage, having never played DnD. That's the standard rule for critical strikes across pretty much every game ever.

By the standard rules in the book, you roll an extra dice for every one you would normally roll. So if you deal 1d6, you roll 2d6. If you get more dice to roll, like sneak attack giving you another d6, you double that as well. So rogues critting on a sneak attack with a shortsword at lvl 1 deals 4d6 + modifiers. Rolling that many dice gets really annoying, so a lot of people use a different rule where you roll the normal amount of dice, double that result, then add modifiers.

We know, we're talking about how Mark told them *not* to double other die as part of the weapon attack, such as Reynard's hunters mark, and in the past Jiutou's poison from her guandao.

Well technically, the rule book says that you roll the dice TWICE, but the house rule is that you double it the first rolls, as it is quicker. Having said that, going either route, you need to apply the critical to all dice rolled. The modifiers are not a part of the critical as they are added to the the rolls.

Unless Mark uses an optional rule concentration should be. Whenever you take damage while you are concentrating on a spell, you must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain your concentration. The DC equals 10 or half the damage you take, whichever number is higher. So the con check for moonbeam should have passed. I think there were other cases of this earlier too. If it were full damage it would be way too hard to hold concentration IMO.

Mark has a long history of using rules incorrectly but claiming it's in the book, but not looking it up ever to verify. Like max hp vs. temp hp, or instant death being based on leftover damage meeting half your max hp not your full max hp, and this. It's honestly painful how much the party has been screwed.

I don't normally comment, but I have a question. I understand that monks get to deflect missiles, but I thought that was a reaction? And as I understand, reactions can only happen once per turn, and when Reynard jumped away, the attack of oppertunity was the reaction used that round? I'll let it slide for RP reasons, but I do wonder, does the reaction slot refresh on each round of initiative, or at the end of a characters turn? (Edit) Found in the PHB: When you take a reaction, you can’t take another one until the start of your next turn. If the reaction interrupts another creature’s turn, that creature can continue its turn right after the reaction.

Guan yin is most likely a monk, monks have evasion at 7th level which would negate the damage of the lightning if they pass the Dex saving throw. It was just a neat way for Mark to explain how it happened. Plus sound travels slower than light.

Thunder is the sound of a lightning strike genius, if you hear thunder the lightning has already struck a fact about lightning: the bolt you see when lightning strikes actually strikes upwards from the earth, by the time you see it (the lightning bolt) it has already struck, the "bolt" happens right after the actual strike . . . . i get it is a fantasy game with magic and shit and that is fine, but if you want to be realistic about it there is absolutely no fucking way you could doge a lightning bolt because before you hear any thunder or see the lightning bolt you have already been hit by it (the visible arc you see travels from the earth to its source)

Resistances that affect the same type of damage don't stack. Guan Yin shouldn't have taken 1/4 damage against piercing damage from Cam's insect plague. I suppose this could be one of Mark's house rules, although I think he has ruled that differently in other circumstances.

Nope, Mark did it right, Guan Yin succeeded on her save so she takes half damage (that is how how the spell works, fail the save take full damage, succeed and take half) she also had resistance to piercing damage so she would take half of the damage dealt to her which would be half of the total damage dealt because she succeeded on her save . . . . meaning she would take 1/4 of the overall damage, there was no stacking of resistances
