I may not care for any of the High School Musical movies nowadays, but back when I was younger, I really enjoyed them. As you said, they are corny and dumb, yet they also harmless and they show a lot of creativity. The reason why I don't care for them nowadays is that I've seen a lot of other movies that are a lot more fun than these movies. Nowadays, I see High School Musical as something fun to look back on. I don't think they're worth watching again, but they will remain good memories to me.

I'll be honest, I've seen the first two High School Musicals, but I've never seen the third, and I'll always remember the ones I saw as decent. They weren't fantastic, they weren't horrible, they were decent. But I do have something to admit: Despite all of this, High School Musical will is very important to me! Why? Two reasons. When I was young, my grandmother was getting married and she wanted me to sing at her wedding. I of course did, and what song did I sing? What I've Been Looking For! And it broke her heart (in a good way)! And when I was a Freshman in High School, the director of the School's annual musical convinced me (almost forced me) to audition for that year's musical. Take ONE guess as to what it was... High School Musical! I auditioned, got casted to play Ripper (the skater who played the cello), and had more fun in 3 months than I had ever had in 9 years of school! Now I'm going to be an actor! High School Musical may not be the greatest movie Disney ever made, but it will always hold a certain spot in my heart. It let me take part in my grandmother's wedding, it started my career as an actor, and I will never forget it!

When I watch the movie now, it is actually true when Doug said that this and many High School entertainment are time capsules. HSM 3 came out when many older millennials (1980-1990) and the younger millennials (1991-1999) were going through transitions. The bad economy was just hitting and this movie came out when the whole millennial argument was beginning to take shape. Many young people were having possible optimism of the future ahead. But once the 2010s hit, it crashed an burned. In many ways, HSM 3 showed the closure of millennial idealism. 2008-2009 was the end of an era. Despite that those born between 1991-1999 would be graduating in the 2010s decade, they were growing up with their older millennial peers from the 80s.

80s and 90s are not millenials. 2000s are literally millenials
@xplodax Жыл бұрын
@@macrocosmique Absolutely wrong. Millennials aren't people who were BORN in the millennium year, but people who became teenagers/adults on or around the millennium year. Therefore, millennials are those who were pretty much born between the early 80s and the early 90s.

I feel like the reason this movie got all the hate is because (as someone growing up with the first 2 movies), by the time this one came out, a lot of my generation was starting to realize how goofy and silly the first 2 movies were. High School Musical 3 is 15 years old! Everyone's facing the pressure and reality of graduating and found to prom and the film doesn't shy away from relatable dilemmas kids face whether it's deciding which college to go to, saying goodbye, or worrying if they'll still stay in touch afterwards Maybe our hearts doesn't know what's in high school, we all wish it would all slow down, there will always be an emphasis on collective action and importance of group effort over individualism The songs are way more catchy, more toe tapping, the sets are sparkling with rich detail and colors, the actors are still so charismatic (they're not bad actors even if they're playing one-dimensional characters), and this certainly feels like a closing chapter of a phenomenon It is after all a thank you note to the fans I suppose on another level that the movie is overwhelmed by so many subplots it's hard to tackle them all, then again the fans want to soak up every minute before it ends And I won't lie I was in tears at several points even the ending which is hard to believe it's all over Again it's an over exaggerated version of high school and cheesy but entertains still with its musical energy It's a series that celebrates talent, enthusiasm, loyalty, and love not just for tween audiences Plus it acts as a nice time capsule with a big budget My second best movie of 2008!

Interestingly, I half-grew up with these movies. When I was in elementary school, these movies were the big thing with my classmates... and, honestly, that was my first experience with ELITISM. As in, my own elitism. I felt like I was "too good" for HSM and refused to watch the movies, even though all my friends loved them, and I didn't like to admit when I actually liked any of the songs when I heard them. It was a strange precursor to the elitism I later had in middle school (which was of the more extreme anti-millenial variety despite having grown up in the early 2000's myself).
@k-leb46712 жыл бұрын
Heh, that reminds me of my childhood "elitism". I also didn't wanna watch shows like this. It was too corny. I was into cool music like trip hop and art rock. ...btw, Nostalgia Critic and High School Musical officially take place in the same universe. Troy and other HSM characters met Kim Possible in Just Dance Disney Channel edition; she met Lilo & Stitch in one episode of the show, and they are part of the Kingdom Hearts Universe, where there also are Final Fantasy characters; Final Fantasy characters also appeared in Mario Sports Mix, where there also is Wario, which had a crossover with Bomberman on Game Boy; Bomberman met the Destructoid robot in Bomberman Live! while the Destructoid Robot met none other than The Critic's nemesis (or one of his nemesises), The Nerd in AVGN adventures. So there you go: same universe.

TallMist Well, to be honest in that promo they never called any of the characters by name, so we can't say for sure that it's Troy, Gabriella and Sharpay rather than the respective actors... But either way Hanna Montana is in Just Dance Disney Channel Edition too, so she's still connected by the same link. This of course also connects Zack & Cody and Wizards of Weaverly too, since they had a crossover.
@TallMist8 жыл бұрын
KrossoverGod That also connects That's So Raven and Cory in the House, because TSR had a cross over with Suite Life. Also one of the brands that London Tipton likes to wear (Artillo Vertali, I think) was mentioned in Jessie and the fact that I hear Jessie actually visited the Tipton and spoke with Moseby where Moseby calls Cody and said Jessie looks a lot like Bailey, meaning that's connected to Wizards of Waverly Place since Wizards is connected to Suite Life meaning Good Luck Charlie is a part of it too, because they had a crossover with Jessie and Good Luck Charlie had a crossover with Shake It Up so THEY are connected too. Jesus Christ almighty.

Y'know, I watched High School Musical movies to laugh at in college, but really, they were pretty entertaining. They did all the cliches, but seemed to really put their all into it and they were colorful and upbeat. Really, movies like this both interest and irritate me. Maybe irritated because I did like them more than I thought I would. No lie, if I was asked to be in one, I'd have jumped at the chance no questions asked. No matter how cheesy, I'd like to be one of those impossible pretty cast members. And dancing is always fun. High School Musical first came out while I was in kindergarten, and ended when I would've been in, what you Americans say, 2nd grade. I liked it back then because A) It was on Disney Channel, which was practically the Nickelodeon of the mid-late '00s B) I found the songs to be pretty decent, and C) I was also fond of shows like Hannah Montanna, but then again, I was 7 when the High School Musical franchise ended. I now hate it because A) The plots are boring and pretentious B) In 3 or 4 years, people are going to be nostalgic over it like crazy, like Nick earlier this decade, and C) Most of the actors hadn't really found their voice/gotten good at acting, yet. Funny how time flies. BTW, Happy Tenth Anniversary, HSM1!

I grew up around these movies, so I'll always have a soft spot for all three, they were a lot of fun even if they are cheesy disney channel fluff

Didn't really say he "liked" it. That he can tolerate it as harmless fluff is the gist what he said. That's a far cry from truly "liking" something. He said he wouldn't watch it again, but he also says that those who do like/love it are not really wrong for doing so(then again it should never be wrong in the first place as it is all subjective opinion). I myself love all three still and I was 20 going on 21 when the first one came out and I love them for their fluffiness. Sometimes it's just what the doctor ordered.

I'm male, and the HSM movies came out when I was about to finish/had just finished high school, so I wasn't at all in the target audience, but at the same time I was too old to hate on them, I mean I felt like people were hating on it just because it's a "girly" thing or simply because it was all over the place, I felt like I had to know better. But my then-10 years old sister liked them, so she had the "Sing It!" HSM games for Christmas, and I kinda had to sing duets with her, but at the same time I felt free to enjoy the songs, which to be honest are pretty good. They're cheesy, but they're entertaining and fun. Eventually I watched the movies, even just to find out how the songs that I learned word for word, would tie in to a story, and I'm pretty much indifferent to the movies. They're certainly better than the average high school romance movies, and in my opinion totally deserved to have the success that they had, if you consider them basically the female equivalent to how superheroes are all over the place. (and by this I'm assuming that the success of HSM comes mostly from girls and the success of superheroes comes mostly from boys, without excluding that either gender can enjoy either thing) Only they're not very much for me. But with this said, I will always be attatched to the HSM series, because of memories of having fun with my sister, and becase I still know most of the songs by heart.

His thought about movies will always surprise me XD we think he will tear a movie apart and surprisingly he likes it. My older sister loved those movies when she was a teenager, and i hated them, but it's funny to see a critic that i respect so much liking this kind of movie^^

My cousin was so obsessed with HSM, she watched it on Disney Channel, she made me go to this movie, it was so sugar coated and weird, it felt like the Kids Bop, Wiggles, Barney and Elmo, all set in high school. It was cheesy fun, not horrible, but it's a tween movie.

I used to think the logic was “if it’s starring teenagers, then it must be FOR teenagers”, and because of that, that makes it even much worse because it reflects nothing like how i felt as a teenager, and it made (teenage) fans even stupider. But now it makes a lot more sense now that you mention “it’s for children who fantasize about being teenagers and romanticizes high school”, as I’ve completely forgotten how fixated I was on being a teenager as a kid myself, once I’ve became a teenager myself. All that mattered to me in my teen years was Nintendo Wii and anime (especially Naruto).

I was about 10 when these film were huge. Now that I’m 20 and have recently rewatch them, I have realized how heavily glamorized, romanized and glorified these movies are. As a kid, I saw it as harmless crap and I still do.

To be honest, I don't think anyone ever argued these were masterpieces. I hated them as a child, because that was the popular thing to do, but looking back on them; they were harmless and happy and cheerful, and I think that's pretty good. I actually do think it'll go on to be remembered as a sort of Grease for the new generation.

I'm also in my senior year and have never watched a single HSM movie in my life. This review has encouraged me to maybe try the 3rd movie, as I'm also very stressed about my future right now and it looks like a bit of fun. God knows whether I'll enjoy it, as I'm a goth and this is definitely not my thing but I want to give it a go.

Honestly, my high school experience was a lot like these films. I mean, I didn't meet some guy at a New Years party, but the cheesiness, the music, almost everything else was what I experienced at my school. Edit: And yes, my graduating class originally chose "We're All In This Together" as our senior song (even though it ended up getting changed)
