I live in a standard roof For E250 Extended cargo van and this is just my opinion on what its like living in a low roof van. I have been full-time in my van for over 7 months and have never really cared about the low roof situation. I love my van and van life has not been affected with the height limitations.

I leave home in 2 days in a minivan. 2014 Toyota Sienna. 23 mpg, paid cash ( last of Savings), low mileage and still under warranty. I plan to be in this for about 10 months of the year. Twice per year I must be in Florida because of family commitments and medical issues. Follow that dream of traveling after retirement - see North America again. Revisit favorites and find new favorites. What more could I want? High roof? Can’t afford it , but that won’t stop me. Thanks Chrome for showing it can be done without anything touted by the big guys; take what you have and go with it. Upgrade as you can afford the changes. 😁❤️❤️

If you're still shopping for your van and you want a cheap high top (obviously this doesn't apply to Chrome :) ), consider a retired wheelchair van. They often have high tops already installed. You may need to remove the lift, but once you do you'll have a ton of room. Or, keep the lift and use it to store a tiny motorcycle inside!

My uncle is gifting me his old work van for my 21st. Hes upgrading and im the brand new owner of a Ford E350. The low roofs got me a little concerned as I start the very beginning of my conversion (Im a woman, but I'm 5'11" barefoot!) But this video, as well as how excited I am to start, has me feeling like its not gonna be a problem

Petri J: I love my minivan! The one thing that I find is that I need to keep reminding myself that less is more. If you can get down to very little in your van then you have some order and neatness so that you can enjoy that tiny space and even look forward to spending time in it (which could make you lazy...lol). Make sure that you have a few comforts that are important to you. Two of my comforts are my little Black & Decker coffee maker and my small electric heater, but then I make sure that I can stay in a location where I can plug in an extension cord (in Canada, usually hotels will let you stay in their parking lots and use the electric outlets which cars are plugged into in the winter). I love my tiny home so keep us posted on what you choose and stay weird :)

I LOVE my low-roof van for all of the same reasons. But I also just travel in it part-time. I've seen the overwhelming majority of people with luxury vans/rvs are too comfortable and can easily miss out. Not to mention, I never worry about driving it: parking garages, tree limbs damaging my solar panels, strong winds rocking the van and such. I'm not the best driver and that is invaluable peace of mind. As a solo female traveler, I love the stealthiness too.

I like the cargo van idea. personally not a fan of the high top style. And as for my reason not to be doing Vanlife yet, it goes back to 1996 on my fathers death bed he made me promise to take care of my mom until she passes. That being said she is going to be 80 on the 27th, and she has Alzheimers the doctors say it won't be long maybe 18 months at the max. after that is VANLIFE bound! Thanks for all the positivity my brother you and all the other weirdos!!!! Thank you!!!

Small spaces are very comfortable to me... I see they are for you, too. 😎 I used to own an extended cab econovan back in the 90's, and though I never lived in it, I know there's plenty of room to make a nice home. 😁 I'll be looking for something in the next couple of years (maybe sooner, if the right vehicle and price come along). In the meantime, I'm building a little nest egg, and waiting for the grandbabies to get a little older and not need me around so much. 🤣 I may go the mom van route (they're everywhere around here) to start, using it for some quality me-time, and little getaways, till I can take off for good. 😀 We'll see. 😉 I wanna be you when I grow up. 😆

Hi Chrome and Disco! Quick question...do you ever park for the night in a parking garage/ramp? If not, why not? Just wondering, ‘cause it seems like it might be a good idea in really bad weather. If so, would a high top fit? Just wondering if getting a high top poses limitations on where you can fit. I think I would worry about the wind profile of the taller vans if you plan to do cross country trips. Thoughts?

I've been considering making a video covering this same topic. My 1987 Dodge Ram B-250 extended tail standard roof cargo van (you're right, that really is a mouthful) is my home five days each week. When looking for a van, I knew exactly what I wanted, which was pretty much everything I got except for the length. I wanted the shortest available wheelbase that I could find in this body style (83 to 89). But when looking for a specific 25-30 year old vehicle, and you find one that checks off every box on your list but one, you buy that b!tch. If you ever get bored, I posted an introduction video about the outcome of this project. The difference between you and I is that for me, even if I could afford a hightop van, I'd still have purchased the standard roof model anyway. As my job is 230+ miles away in Jackson, Tennessee, and the wind never let's up along half or more of the most direct route (U.S. 412 from Black Rock, Arkansas to Jackson, TN), it was important to me that I get the best fuel mileage possible from the carbureted V8 in this full-size van. It's length is a strike against me, as when the wind gusts hit me, it's like this old van has the aerodynamics of a huge billboard. The extra height of a taller van would end up costing me even more in fuel traveling to and from almost 500 miles round trip each week. One thing I like about your videos, Chrome, is that you make it understood that what you're doing is what works for you. You offer suggestions rather than committing to the idea that your way is the best way, instead always reminding us, your viewers that your way is what's best for you. Though most van-dwellers are as laid back, I have come across one or two on KZbin that actually believe if others don't follow their example, then those others are idiots. Apparently these few van-lifers have no grasp of the old motto, "to each his (or her) own." For example; is it a waste of space to layout my van with the twin bed running down the center lengthwise, rather than across, or at least lengthwise but up against either side wall? Yes, it most certainly is. But I figure it like this.... I've got more cabin space than what I had originally wanted, plus, once insulated and panelled, I'd either have to sleep with my feet against one wall, and my head against the other, or lay on the bed at an angle. Neither of those alternatives work for me. Once completed, the bunk will be removable, allowing me to still use the van as a cargo van should I need to. The bed frame in my video is temporary. When finished, the bottom cabinets along both sides will hold the bunk in place, allowing me the ability to carry long items such as 4'x8' plywood, or lumber such as 2"x12" planks up to 12' long. At present the only thing I can get under the bunk is the spare tire. But in the end, the main reason for running the bunk down the center of the van is simply this.... "because I want to." Just wanted you to know that you're an inspiration to not only the full-time weirdos, but to those of us that embrace the weirdness part-time as well. Although technically, Monday through Saturday in the van and Saturday through Monday at home is more full-time than not. Keep it real, my friend. Always be true to yourself, and keep on keeping on.

Hey, thank you for all your videos -- I watch them all the time. I'm starting my conversation at the beginning of the year and will be full-time by April. I'm very short, but I wont be able to stand in the Ford E series either. But I'm thinking of putting the type of adjustable height stool that massage therapists use. They can go very short and instead of trying to stand up, I can roll back and fourth. I'm also going to keep my counters as low as possible. There is no reason to try to stand while cooking etc, if I can sit on my stool and cook.

I couldn't do it. I did a 2 month "around the country" trip in a standard height Dodge conversion van with an ex. While we tried to spend as little time as possible IN the van, those times the weather didn't cooperate made squatting and kneeling in the van annoying. Thank god the van had a comfy bed. The problem with most high top camper vans, besides cost, is the MPG. In order to stand in a van like yours or it's Chevy/Dodge equivalent I would need a 20"+ high top. That takes a big toll on fuel mileage, not to mention making it look unmistakably like a camper, but I think I've found a solution... I'm currently looking for an E250-350 wheelchair van with a DROPPED floor. They cut out and lower the floor 6" behind the front seats to the rear wheel wells to accommodate the taller seated height of someone in a wheelchair. Combined with a much lower(more fuel efficient) 16 inch "TV top" you get at least 5' 11" of standing height in that area depending on the thickness of your insulation/flooring/headliner. An added bonus is the van just looks like a conversion van/family hauler. Stealth, additional storage in overhead cabinets AND standing height. Now I just need to find the right van.

I don’t know about starting out in a minivan and the only reason I say that is because of safety and security. The idea of a ton of windows just doesn’t do it for me. I’d be worried about pervs. A simple van seems to be more stealth. Plus I am really wanting a dog so to be fair, something a bit bigger would be needed. Disco looks comply so that is endorsement enough. Thanks for the insights, enjoy your day off!

How tall are you? How short would someone have to be to stand comfortably in a van like that?

Do some checking you can make your van a high top pretty reasonably most places that do that kind of work. Think Bob (cheaper rv living) said his was about 1200 bucks hahaha lot cheaper than a new van payment and you can stand up :D

Question, what does happen if you can't see, or can't drive your van? Do you sell everything and live in a senior retirement center for the rest of your life?

In the states there are #2 places who INSTALL high tops ( fiberglass) for around $3800. Maybe research in your area where such places exist..In CA, USA it's called Fiberene...Happy trails🚐🐕👍

Yes , high top vans are more comfortable but when I think of some garages or drive throughs, you will be limited of how much you can drive through with a high top. As Chrome mentions, get out and stretch, honestly on every day basis you are inside the van only to relax and not stand heh.

Longer term, if you like the idea of a high roof cargo van, you can look at Ford Medium Roof or High Roof Cargo vans. Or, look at the Dodge High Roof Cargo Vans. And, the other option if you’re looking at a GMC or Chevy Cargo van-there is a terrific installer of high top roofs in California (name escapes me). Cost is about $4,000 to complete. They do it right; they water seal the roof and the difference is amazing! You can have a high top roof on your Ford cargo van installed for around $4,000.-if you really want one. And, you’ll still be quite stealth with the streamlined way they do it. Just sayin’, man-where there is a will there is a way...:)

It is funny non-vanlife people always want you to haul your car behind you or have a campsite to live in for safety purposes. They don't understand that the life you choose is going to save you more money then their suggestions.

So question for you, how tall are you? I plan on getting the same van u jave and I'm 5'4 and I plan on using a solar shower most of the time but I also considered rigging an indoor shower for yucky days. I know I wont be able to stand up but you look very tall. Trying to get an idea of how I may shower in the van. Probably squat. Ha ha. Thanks for another great video
