With nearly half of American marriages today made up of interfaith couples, deciding how and whether to integrate religion into the family, and how the kids will be raised is an ongoing issue for many. For scholar, TV host, commentator and author Reza Aslan and his wife, Jessica Jackley, founder of Kiva and also a well-known author, the question of how their two religions would intersect at home has been central. The bottom line, though, say Aslan and Jackley, who have three young sons, is that all couples are inter-belief. The Christian mom and Muslim dad share their unique approach to respecting all faiths - “home church.”
Jessica Jackley is an award-winning social entrepreneur and author of the widely acclaimed book CLAY WATER BRICK: Finding Inspirations from Entrepreneurs Who Do the Most with the Least. She is best known as the co-founder of Kiva, the world’s first and largest P2P micro lending website. She also co-founded Pro-Founder, a crowdfunding platform for U.S. entrepreneurs, and Kin & Co., a consultancy helping organizations support women and working families. She is an investor and advisor with Collaborative Fund, a board member for Habitat for Humanity, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. Jackley holds degrees from Bucknell University and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, as well as a certificate in Global Leadership and Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their three sons, where she currently serves as Social Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Southern California.
Reza Aslan is an internationally renowned scholar of religions and writer whose books include the #1 New York Times Bestseller, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, and the International Bestseller, No God but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam. Aslan teaches creative writing at the University of California, Riverside. His writing has been published in The New York Times, Slate, The Daily Beast, The Christian Science Monitor and The Washington Post, and he makes frequent appearances on TV and radio shows as a religions and political analyst. He is also a Consulting Producer for HBO’sThe Leftovers, and the host and executive producer for the CNN original series, Believer. His fourth book, god, will release this fall.

I may add one more thing based on my own experience, my wife is Catholic, I'm a Muslim we've been Married for 20 years, I was her first husband, she was my first and last wife. I believe the key of success is we knew that we are different from the get go. Our relation was build on respect from the beginning. We didn't need to challenge each other cause we knew we are different, we had to learn from each other..and we still learning everyday, that's make the relation exiting not boring. .Respect is the key of successeful marriage and love is the foundation of it ..if love is present without respect the marriage will fall a part. This is my personal opinion. I love the video, wonderful couple. Thanks.

@@Livingalittle Sorry to hear that, when you say convert do you mean convert from Christianity to Islam? If that's the case I like to Clarify something: As you know in any faith there's multiple schools of thought, my Islamic school of thought teaches me that anyone who Believes in existence of God is a Muslim, the Doctrine of religion varies between Muslims , Jews Christianity and other.. the Religion is one "Submission to God" the word Submission in Arabic is "Islam".. If you Believe in existence of God..you are a Muslim, you don't have to Convert to different Doctrine. Ask your Fiancee Why the Quran announced that Ibrahim was a Muslim? Ibrahim never knew Prophet Muhammad .. Ibrahim was a Muslim cause he believed in God. If you are a Christian , you believe in God and if you believe in God you are a Muslim per Quranic definition . Good luck..

@friendlycreature6375

@@fritzgeraldekane8092 Actually, for Muslim conservative families they wouldn't accept neither their son nor their daughter to get married with a non muslim person. Plus for a male muslim, he's obliged to be married with a Christian girl who is already willing to convert to Islam or marries her for the sake of spreading Islam. And have her know more about it. As for the children, i think both parents should agree on allowing their children to choose which religion they feel much more comfortable with. While Islam says that if a man marries a non Muslim woman, the children should follow their father's faith, not mother's. That's why a Muslim woman is not allowed to marry a non Muslim man.

And they are right, they tend to last longer.. but its Reza .. he is a lier !! he claims to be a scholar in theology.. but nobody hired him as theologist .. he is working a creative writer for US C ?? anyways, even in his talks, he contradics his own statements.. this talk was actually good and i am sure she didnt convert or was forced to wear hijab.. so the hate has nothng to do with a muslim marrying a christian. I have met muslim men, who married to convert or literally tortures.. and tend to marry girls, with issues ( imotional / financial), there are lots in Florida, Alabama, Michigan, New Jersey.. I can go in details .. but Reza is not like that, he is probably more civilized than you and me.. the irk is with his profession ... nothing more.

Disagree completely. For example, Judaism is matrilineal: you are only considered Jewish if your mother is Jewish. Therefore, all the pressure is on the man to find a Jewish wife in order for their children to be considered Jewish, but the same pressure doesn't exist for women.
@dorthusiast

Bobby Mack That's true. Another point to be made is, despite the fact of Sharia law prohibiting Muslim women from having a relationship with Non-Muslim men, they still often do. In addition, in any interfaith marriage really, mother's religion has a higher percentage of being inherited by the children rather than the dad.

Most interfaith couples do not start out as open-minded, but they become flexible to keep the love in their lives. Its Reza Aslan and not about the interfaith marriage. The are thousands of interfaith / intercolor marriage all over the world.

@Susie X as a universalist that makes sense. But neither of them are spiritualists, their religions are quite specific as to what heaven is and how you get there.

In islam you can be a muslim and still marry a Christian, problem solved. Reza can keep his faith and his wife her's. Both can go to the heavens, or they can discuss and choose the right one.

From a Muslim perspective, there is only one god for all the monotheist religions, so as his heaven. Not only Muslims go to heaven, and not all Muslims go to heaven. Beliving in god and having good deeds are what give you the chance to get there and following the messages of god after hearing it and fully understanding it. "Paradise is not [obtained] by your wishful thinking nor by that of the People of the Scripture (mainly Christian and Jews). Whoever does a wrong will be recompensed for it, and he will not find besides a God protector or a helper. And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer - those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged." Quran 4:123 and 4:124

I think this TED Talk was a great talk. I've asked Reza on my Twitter page that I'm hoping to get an answer to. I know he's very busy but he is clearly very active on Twitter so I figured it would be the best place to ask him this question. I'm waiting for an answer from him. Here's the question as I wrote it on Twitter and a link to that Tweet: "Question for Reza, as a Muslim, how do you feel about Muslim women marrying Christian or Jewish men openly? I hope to get an honest answer." twitter.com/BIG_George_NYC/status/871762777488203782.

Harry, Harry, Harry, don't jump to conclusions. When we do that we come across like uneducated fools. I asked a question of Reza because I know he can't answer it honestly without getting in trouble with his Muslim fans. You see, a Muslim man can marry a woman of another faith because in the end it meets the need to procreate and have Muslim children but a Muslim woman cannot marry outside of her faith without being completely abandoned by her family, friends and people, and even killed at some instances. So I want to see how real and honest this Reza dude is. I know he's not going to answer the question because even though in this video he is pretending to be so open minded and free spirited, he knows he cannot say it is OK for a Muslim woman can marry a none-Muslim man without him (Reza) getting destroyed publicly and privately by his Muslim friends. Again Harry Parsons, don't jump the gun when replying to people. Your reply on my video made you look extremely passionate, but also EXTREMELY uneducated (stupid). If you would have asked me what my motivation for the question was, you would not have made a fool of yourself by calling Reza a terrorist and then using that type of FU language towards me. We HAVE TO be a little more intelligent in our comebacks than that Harry.

George L. Rosario Did u miss where they said beliefs don't always correlate with doctrine? I know many Muslim women who married outside their faith and nothing happened to them. It's like a Muslim drinking alcohol. I mean I get why you may have that perception but it's not okay to generalize people specially a large faith group of people like Muslims.

On the surface, you may think this talk seems so right. If we can all just get along like these two. The only difference is that bring the stance that everything is relative. That the truth on anything can't be known. Doctrines are ALL incorrect and Belief is all relative and personal therefore, probably wrong but it's ok because its right for you as an individual. Jesus was either who he says he was OR a lunatic. He leaves no option for being anything in between. You can agree to disagree on all kinds of doctrine however, the fundamental point of Christianity is who is Jesus and what he says about the final outcome of a human's life if they reject him. Make a choice and 1 of those choices will be right. If you believe it to be relative then there is no truth. I suggest there is.

Yes, and given this how can this fundamental aspect foundation in someone's life be different between a married couple and there not being extreme conflict? You're telling the other person that the thing they value most is entirely bull. How does that just blow over?

this was an interesting talk from a charming couple, but it strikes me as hardly Christian or Muslim - the disavowal of doctrine, the accommodation, and integration of their differences strikes me as Humanist - which is great AFAIC, but it's not "religion" in any traditional sense, and would be flatly rejected by the hierarchy and fundamentalists of both traditions

@@ghaziasohail4710 only to people of the book. You can't marry a Hindu or a Sikh. And it's seen best to convert your partner. This is just for men. Women can't marry anyone other than muslims, not even people of the book. That's the view of the majority and it just makes me sad.

Ali Zaidi Nowhere in Quran does it say that Muslim women should not marry Christian or Jewish men. This is just made up by fundamentalist Muslims. There is no single verse in Quran that bars Muslim women from getting married to monotheistic men.

Kenneth White I hope they find the right path .. but it seems that they are confusing the kids .. in my opinion it’s better to focus in one religion and teach them early the rituals so they can absorb it and build themselves within it .. I recommend Islam because I’m Muslim and it makes sense to me .. but putting the kids in such a religious tour and expose them to too many faiths it will highly attract secularism cause they didn’t have the chance to build a religious identity and they didn’t spend enough time in one basic teaching ..
