Still remember back in the 90's I entered a T1.5 tournament with this deck. I remember playing Bloodmoons, Mox Diamonds and a couple more mana-rocks, Covetous Dragon as a finisher after destroying all lands, Smokestacks and Armageddons... It was called some kind of Red Prison deck back in the day. Good to see this archtype does very well again in Legacy.

there's always been something about mono-red prison lists that's so pleasing and elegant to me. every card has such a clear purpose--no filler, all killer, and the small synergies within the deck (shatterskull as a pitchable land, sokenzan tokens to crew hearse, reflections copying fury, etc) are so satisfying when they come together. great games and great commentary 👍

4:13 In the case of Shatterskull Smashing however it is a land that can be pitched to Chrome Mox and Fury which makes it more than worth it.

Yeah, you can argue about the correct number of Dens to run, and I think you can make a case for any number from 1 to 4 being correct. Shatterskull Smashing is an undisputed 4-of at this point due to its flexibility.

Mono-red has been my favorite Legacy deck to watch for a long time, and it's always really fun when it's well positioned in the meta. There's just something about playing three-mana beaters on turn one that warms the soul.

This looks fun. It's not your typical red prison. I took apart delver back when oko, arcanist, etc are bans. I've been on infect since and it's an uphill fight against delver, they do what you do but they can count to 20 and have better card selection. I might have to sleeve this up and take it to legacy night!

Yeah, it's almost like Red Prison and Moon Stompy are just different decks at this point. If you compare this to the Jokulhaups video I posted today, for example, they are just different decks entirely even though they share a core.

If you want to play at big, competitive events, they are necessary. If you're going to play at your local game store once a week or something, you can work around it. Crystal Vein is sometimes a budget option.

Are the Karn builds generally better than the stompy/aggro builds? They sure feel powerful when they curve a T1 trinisphere into a T2 Karn + Liquimetal Coating lock where I never get a chance to cast a spell. The creatures seem less scary.

Generally, yes, as of right now. "Getting people dead" is a pretty good strategy when so many people are setting up to grind a long game. This will absolutely fluctuate with the meta though.

around 20:05 you mention trinisphere playing well against hogack, but with the Delve rules as they are right now that's no longer true. Delve doesn't reduce the cost anymore, but each card exiled pays for 1 generic of the cost, so for example treasure cruise can be cast for 1 mana as technically the 8 was paid through trinisphere. I don't know how long ago this rules interaction was changed or why, but it's there.

Putting a chalice on one will kill delver by itself. Putting moon on turn two will also do significant work. Doing both consistently seems like the best against delver, but not good against all decks in the format. opps all spells, TEST, and belcher probably stomp the shit outta this list.

Before even watching the matches I just look at this list and can't see how this deck can reliably beat a murktide even with unlicensed hearse. With ensnaring bridge and Karn you can at least overload them with lockpieces even if they draw their single brazen borrower.

@@shalop5614 An archetype doesn't have one specific list it's married to. There's a lot of red stompy decks out there and I fully believe that they have an overall good winrate against delver. I just don't think that maindeck inlicensed hearse is good in the current format or even against delver unless you play it very early while something like bridge still works with your goblins quite well and stops opposing threats from attacking even if you draw it late or the murktide is already out.
