Highlights of our 1000km snowmobile expedition from Northern BC to Central Yukon as a family. With winter quickly approaching (we had our first snowfall yesterday!), we thought it would be a good time to revisit some highlights of our epic snowmobile expedition this spring, which took our family from our home in northern BC, to the Central Yukon, by snowmobile. Our dog Scooby gcame along too, in his very own Scooby mobile.
Together as a family, We snowmobiled Almost 1000km through overflow, deep snow, spring glaciers, across open water, and so much more. Together, as a family, we overcame all the obstacles and the challenges this snowmobile expedition threw at us, such as extreme cold, multiple breakdowns of toboggans and snowmobiles, going through the ice, and a machine almost not starting right in the most remote part of our Yukon snowmobile trip.
We created a 3 part documentary about this 1000km snowmobile expedition, that goes into the detail. but we realize not everybody has time to sit down and watch 30 minute long documentaries, or maybe you just want a more condensed version of the trip. Well, here it is!
Our Yukon Snowmobile trip, starts in our community of Atlin BC, nestled on the border with the Yukon and Alaska. We start by crossing various lakes, and then a network of nicely maintained trails in the Whitehorse Yukon area. We then follow the Yukon Quest route to Dawson city. In many parts heavy snowfall made the route hard to find, and many trees had fallen across. In Carmacks, we spend the night in a hotel to freshen up and have a shower, and fix the starter on Justin's snowmobile.
We snowmobile on the Yukon river for a long ways, snowmobiling on the river, among the jumble ice was a humbling experience, we're mostly used to snowmobiling on lakes, and the moving water underneath the ice, added a layer of excitement and stress.
From Pelly crossing to Pelly farm, we take a forestry road instead of the pelly river, as the temperatures have warmed up and the locals are saying the ice is not safe. Between pelly farm and Dawson city, Leandra goes through the ice on a spring glacier, and her snowmobile won't start anymore. Thankfully only for a few hours!
We make our way through the black hills to dawson city, where our snowmobile expedition ends after 10 days.
Every night, we camp in our heated wall tent, or hot tent, however you want to call it. We set up our montana canvas, that's a heavy beast, but at the same time a pop up cabin. It takes us about two hours to set up camp, including hauling firewood and water. Once inside the tent, we can dry all our gear, cook some food, and have a good night sleep.
Many of you asked, Upon arrival in Dawson City, Yukon. How did we get back to our home in Atlin, BC?!
We had left our truck and trailer with a friend, who came to pick us up!
