One month in Resolute, High arctic snowmobile Patrols, Polar night and extreme temperatures.
Resolute, a remote settlement located on Cornwallis Island in Canada's Nunavut territory, stands as a symbol of resilience in the face of extreme conditions. Situated at a latitude of approximately 74 degrees north, it lies within the Arctic Circle, where the sun disappears for months during the polar night.
Living in Resolute during the polar night is a unique experience, marked by extended periods of darkness and bitter cold. With temperatures plummeting well below freezing, you must adapt to the harsh realities of Arctic life. Yet, amidst the darkness, and extreme cold, there are scientific and army bases to be found here, for those willing to expose themselves to test their limits.
Philippe spent a month in Resolute, as part of the Canadian rangers at the Arctic military training center.
Navigating the vast expanse of sea ice and snow-covered terrain on snowmobiles was both exhilarating and challenging. Inland, where the landscape stretches endlessly before you, the silence is deafening, broken only by the roar of the wind. On the sea ice, the frozen ocean stretches as far as the eye can see, a mesmerizing expanse of ice and sky except when there is jumble sea ice, but we all love a good challenge..
Building igloos, traditional shelters of the Inuit people, is a skill passed down through generations. Constructing these snow domes requires patience, precision, and a deep understanding of the land. Inside, the warmth of a seal oil lamp and the soft glow of candlelight create a sanctuary from the biting cold outside. It was amazing how solid the igloos are and how the snow is packed enough to make building blocks.
Patroling in military vehicles and on snowmobiles across the frozen tundra, is a journey into the heart of the high arctic. Traversing wide open snow-covered landscapes, offering a glimpse into the resilience of human ingenuity. It's a beautiful vastness of white.
My time in Resolute was a fantastic. Though the cold may be fierce and the darkness unending, there is a beauty here that defies description. It is a land of extremes, where life thrives against all odds, and where every day brings new challenges and new wonders.
A "In the Arctic, every minute is precious, every sight, every sound, every movement seems more significant." In Resolute, amidst the vastness of the polar landscape, every moment is indeed a treasure, a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of nature.

My father worked at a camp on Melville Island for many years, but never took a picture, much less any video. Thanks to your great video I now have an idea of the environment in which he worked. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I completely agree with you that keeping your face warm in cold weather can be quite challenging. I used to dress appropriately for winter weather while working on our mountain-top microwave repeater sites. Although I would feel warm and comfortable after getting out of the helicopter, my face would always feel cold by the time we cleared the path and reached the communications hut.

Hello from windy Skagway, Alaska! My name is Logan - I came across your youtube channel a few weeks ago looking for offroad tracks in the Yukon. I have not yet visited Atlin but I hope to do some 4x4 exploring and camping in the area this summer. It would be an absolute pleasure to be able to meet you guys and talk about offroading sometime! I have an old toyota I am building very similar to your 1987. Anyways, Very cool video on the Canadian Arctic! Or should I say very cold.. Brrrrrr.

Awesome video. What are the booths and paints you wear to stay warm. I’m in fort McMurray Alberta. Have a Canada goose coat. Wanted to know your thoughts on booths and paints.

Thanks! I have the Helly Hansen arctic patrol bib pants, and the arctic patrol modular parka 2.0. For boots I used the Baffin Apex. Nothing is perfect, but the boots were great and the bib and coat system were very warm.
