Greedy corporations jacked up prices during the 2020 pandemic supply chain shortages but are now reaping record profits and believe that consumer can sustain can cope with higher prices. The only way now to reduce prices back to pre pandemic level is to trigger a recession and collapse consumer ability to buy. Only when consumers stop buying overpriced goods will they lower prices to stay competitive. The other way is to introduce more competition and put an end to price fixing.

Also learned in Economic Geography and Transportation Economics classes the reasons why businesses locate factories in certain places in the US and world. Tarriffs are not a reason.
@jvoet1235 күн бұрын
If Democrats are so anti-tariff, why did the Biden/Harris administration keep the tariffs imposed on China and other industries by the Trump administration? Probably because they've generated over $256 billion in revenue. Did you also learn that the corporate tax rate was one of the main factors that determine where businesses locate globally? Trump lowered the corporate tax rate in the US from 35% to 21%.

A nation's industrial policy has to match its demand for labor with its pool of employable labor. In every population, capability will be normally distributed (Gaussian). Proper industrial policy should enable a nation to have employment at every capability. That will include far more blue collar labor than we've had here for at least a generation. That work does not require immigration to complete, it requires higher wages, so that folks living in US cost of living can afford to do that work. We have a shortage of affordable housing, we have a shortage of construction jobs that pay enough for folks to do that work while living near enough to the work (unless most of those they support are living in a lower cost of living location). The market has had a least a generation to solve this and it hasn't, very possibly because of the strength of the US$ and US asset price inflation making the cost of living in the US a hate crime against the working poor.
@alphabrainwave3 күн бұрын
Tariffs are like medicine. If there is an imbalance, they can help bring balance if used deliberately and in proper doses. But if used recklessly, they can cause imbalance and lead to extremely harmful side effects. Trump does not understand this at all, and his tariff shock would be extremely harmful to our economy.

Build more apartments is all they really want. Apartment buildings they get to own!
@warhamwaggkl4 күн бұрын
it is true that tariffs raise the cost of consumer goods, but for the past 50 years inflation tracked by the CPI is a rounding error on the inflation of asset prices. If there are not to be tariffs to combat the industrial policies of other countries stealing jobs, then there has to be a wealth tax on all assets, especially financial assets. We're at the end of the Monopoly game here, those with wealth have so much they can simply out pay everyone else to buy all that remains and demand any price for it, when they sell/rent it back. The wealthy are doing that with housing right now. Wealth inequality is not ok, it enslaves all but the wealthiest. Money is not a resource that is consumed, it is a resource that is exchanged, as some have more, others have less. The size of the pie doesn't matter if most have no capacity to have any pie because the wealthy have bought up every crumb. If you are not this poor yet, remember Martin Niemoller's prayer.

Compare that with the inflation of the '70's and '80's when it was above 6% from 1974 to 1984, and reached a peak of 11.5 % in 1976 and over 13% in 1980. and didn't stay below 4% until 1991. @@normanzimmerman5029 @normanzimmerman5029 You speak from the perspective of the country having "the high ground" of being able to dictate over others. That Trump interview where he says essentially "when I threaten them they WILL use the USD" is a great example. BUT You now have a collective of countries saying, or about to say "No thank you" when USA tries the "Deal on OUR terms or lose our business" line. They will say "no problem!" and deal with each other. (Just btw, it's BRICS plus The Belt and Road initiative countries.... 150 in the latter) If you open your eyes you'll see it's already happening

The only thing that's ‘highly misguided, dangerous and harmful’ in this interview is Janet Yellen. In June 2021, when inflation had jumped to 5.4%, she predicted it would reduce to 2% by year end or early 2022. Inflation was 7.0% by year end (Dec 2021), and up to 8.5% by March 2022. Take her calculations with a grain of salt.

Tariffs will create jobs in the US. When it costs these US companies a high tariff to make their products in China, they'll start having their things made in the US with American labor.

Hasn't worked out the last time: Due to Trump's imposed tarrifs, prices of US intermediate goods have rissen by 10% to 30%. Moreover, these countries targeted by tarrifs retaliate in accordance: - The retaliatory tariffs by the EU has led to an estimated $13.2 billion in annual losses for US businesses across 17 different commodity groups. - The retaliatory tariffs imposed by China on US agriculture products has cost an estimated $27 billion in lost exports for US agricultural producers between 2018 and 2019, and the Trump administration had to pay $28 billion to US farmers in 2018 and 2019 to offset these losses, plus additional aid packages were announced in 2020, bringing the total to $61 billion. In effect, the trade war with China was more costly for the Trump government than the revenue from these tariffs. And Brazil said 'Thank You'.
