The i3 has its appeal, but it's _incredibly_ much more uncomfortable, noisy, faaaar worse in handling and the driving experience, etc. etc. There's something fun about the i3 but the truth is that it's very flawed as well. I owned one, and when I sold it I leased a F20 118i for a few months while waiting for my new car and the difference between the i3 and 118i was hard to believe...the 118i felt like a Rolls-Royce compared to the i3 in comfort, and like a Ferrari compared to the i3 in sportiness and driving experience.

No one who's sensible blows £100,000 on a weekend car. Perhaps £40,000, but there are still plenty of wild options in that money range. I like V8's, V10's & of course V12's & I'm not sensible.

Two points Matt, and this is from an ex-owner of a BMW 530e. Hybrids are a waste of time if you’re a regular long distance driver. The batteries cause less efficiency because they represent dead weight when discharged. This impacts the mpg for the petrol. The i8 looks the part and as a run around, I think it’ll be great. The only problem is the rampant obesity problem in the UK combined with the narrow parking spaces. You won’t be able to get in your car so you better have specced the remote parking!

Although I enjoyed your review, from my perspective you a missed some vital information. 1) Battery replacement, because lets be honest, they don't last forever. How long do they last and how much are they to replace 2) Fuel comsumption whilst the battery is low. Can a 1.5L turbocharged engine be good enough to return at least 8L per 100 kms whilst batteries run low? 3) Whats the fastest it can charge? 4) A lot lf reviews talk about a TON of problems which cost a lot. 5) Does braking charge the batteries? If it does, how long does it take to fill the batteries?

This video is a classic example of why you must try a car for yourself before forming an opinion. Just because one person loves/hates a car, doesnt mean the next person will feel the same. It's not my style of car (I am more a large SUV sort of guy), but i do think it is a nicely unique looking car.

Take a look at what BMW quoted for the MPG. I think it was something like 140mpg. Lucky to get 35 in real life.
@js986 Жыл бұрын
Plug-in MPG is never representative, no one is expecting to get 140MPG. Just like no one really gets 54MPG from a Golf GTD.

This car is my favorite I HAVE EVER OWNED! Audi/AMG/Tesla my previous cars dont compare. traded in my 2019 Tesla S performance for it. Mine is also 2016. has the plug in functionality of the tesla for most my in town driving. However I can also just gas up and go where as my tesla I was constantly charging up on trips. 10 gallons gets me 350miles range or more on trips as well. Has been my daily driver for the last 45k miles... Wouldn't trade it for anything really. I have other cars but I find that im using this the most period. unplug it hop in and go. Also on paper the S performance is faster. However in real world once my tesla was under 40% battery there was a serious decline in its pep especially 0-60. I have seen 3.8 second 0-60 in the i8 so it certainly isnt slow. it also handles worlds better than the S ever dreamed about on top of being much nicer inside. I even am tempted to put "super Prius" badges on the back of it for fun

Far far better than the soothsayers would have you believe ....... its a brilliant car in its own right, and what else for around 40k looks this modern, stylish, unique, and won't cost you a penny to tax? ...... as usual you are bang on the money with your review Matt, a very balanced opinion 👍

This is probably the fairest review I’ve seen on the i8 yet and agree with your review. I have been eyeballing this car for years, i just love the styling/look and your description of it being a super car/normal car blend. So I’m gonna take a look at a few, drive them and see what I think/feel 😀

Owned one for 3 months now. Absolute head Turner and amazing drive. But these are the faults so far… - drivers side door won’t close/lock randomly and then flings open (about 10% of the time) - randomly got driveshaft warning - smell petrol? - there’s only one usb for charging in entire car and it half works… rn my charge button is flickering on off on off on off - the wipers broke This was in mint condition and well within service but got it booked in. Would I change my mind about buying it? Absolutely not

Drove one i8s of these on a supercar track day and it was amazing! Very fast and manoeuvrable around the track and it was awesome. Decided I wanted one and then did the research on the maintenance including windscreen and tyres. Then the romance stopped and I labelled it as the poor man’s Bugatti.
@murrieteacher Жыл бұрын
Bugger! You have just exposed one of the best kept secrets. I was hoping all the negative reports would help the car depreciate even further so I could get one. In Australia there is nothing under $150,000 and one convertible asking over $300,000. Divide our dollar by 2 to get British pounds and that is way above UK prices.
@deaks25 Жыл бұрын
I think the i8's one problem was that it was one of the first through the door. No-one knew what a hybrid-electric sports car was supposed to be like. Also, what sort of world have we become when reviews complain about gull-wing doors; of course they impractical, everyone knows it, but Rule-of-Cool always beats boring real world stuff. For every awkward parking, there will several "these are so cool!".
@unknownagian6012 Жыл бұрын
Bro you took the world right out of my mouth when after you said everything about everyone’s reviews just before that 5 minute mark on the video. “It doesn’t really matter” because the car is great you may have some maintenance issues in the long run but something’s you learn on your own to fix

I worked as an ‘M’ and ‘I’ specialist at BMW for a couple of years and this car blew my mind until I drove it. I was expecting it to be faster and more engaging than the M3/4/5 but it left me numb which is such a shame as I still absolutely love how it looks and what it could cost to run. Great video thank you 👍

For me, the i8 is not about engagement and speed, it is about owning a BMW that was spectacularly dynamic in design flair and puts a smile on your face everytime you clamber into the cabin without the need for speed.

I’m just an upper middle class guy. Realistically, I will never be able to afford an expensive super car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini. I looked at sports cars like a porche boxster , Maserati and I8 roadster. All were within the same year 2019 and price point. I wanted something for the weekend. Whether going to the beach or mountains. I liked the look, drive ability and comfort of the I8 overall. This car feels special and always gets compliments, especially opening the doors. They are fast enough and do you need to drive over 150 miles per hour anyways? I rarely see an I8 on the road compared to other sport cars. Especially, now BMW aren’t making them anymore. The original MSRP was priced too high at the time. But, they come down to market value. In my opinion in time the BMW I8 will be a classic.

First saw one of these on a stand inside the terminal at Frankfurt airport. It looks as good now as it did then. The next time I saw one it had a picture of Wayne Rooney driving it. Always thought that if you lifted the lid you’d find two shiny bid Duracells inside. If it makes you feel like a fluffy rabbit with a tin drum - it’s worth getting one.
