Hi Matt, Just watched the video with the family, kids screaming "there's our car" anxiety levels were high watching this even though we no longer own the car still felt like my car was being reviewed. I had bought the car (CA09HHC) for my wife after the birth of our daughter it was the replacement to her previous car MK5 GTi also DSG fortunately no issue with that one. Got the car from Keystone cars in Ringwood about 10/15 mins from Bournemouth, back then car had 74k miles already. it had a horrible head unit with a parrot Bluetooth hence the aftermarket radio. when the issue started beginning of the year it wasn't consistently happening so when I took the car to VAG Technik my local VW specialist it would behave and not throw up any issue but they tried the DSG service hence you see it was serviced this year but to no avail. they advised taking it to a CAL Trans in Denton and they confirmed Mechatronic issue. The numbers quoted (like £2000) for repair did not make sense as we were also aware of the oil leak that required attention so we decided to trade it in, which we did for a Sportage. Oh the Mrs likes Classic FM 😁

VWs do not sound like quality cars at all the more I learn about them and the more stories I hear. My Toyota 4Runner has over 225,000 miles in it and is 24 years old. It might now actually be starting to bite the dust? But it had a commendable run if it does finally die. No reason for cars to have such issues under 200k miles and being less than 20 years old.

This was a quite some time ago so now it could be around 1.5k eur but still way better than whole mess you get yourself into driving through half the country and back to meet some looser trying to pass scrap as "well preserved, one driver, totally not a taxi" kind of car :D

Decent used gearbox will set you back £500. New flywheel around £250. 4 hours labour to swap the lot. Under a grand to sort that lot. Personally I'd have got the mechatronic unit reconditioned for around £400 and very likely that's all it really needed. It drove fine up to 4th gear so flywheel likely perfectly serviceable. Mechatronics unit swap is only a couple of hours work. No need for gearbox removal. The 'stuck in 2nd gear you experienced was just limp mode for the gearbox. It allows 2nd and Reverse so you can get home when it detects a fault. You spent crazy money! Couple of hundred quid on a set of facelift rear LED tail light and it's all good.

I've a 2010 GT 160 mk6 one with 1.4 twincharger 3 door manual. Very similar to gti other than engine, it's a manual and it's only 88k miles and i'm 2nd owner. I had to do timing chain (bad job if that jumps a tooth so get that done), ignition coils. I put on nice brigestone potenza, replaced front disc's and pads, wheel alignment, very high end Sony headunit with JL amp and sub. LED tailights, R spoiler, cat back system and various other bits, remap to 200HP. I love the wee car. It cost me less that his GTi including all the mods I put on my car (not sound system) and i've had it nearly 4 years. The paint is peeling though. Great wee car.

This gen GTI has a wet clutch 6-speed DSG. The technology was still fairly new, and problems were common. However, the 7-speed dry clutch version from the same period is even worse. The dry clutches can't handle normal city driving and wear quickly, causing all kinds of problems and jerkiness along the way.

Haha, love the comment about GTI fans, here are some of my thoughts. The aftermarket headunit keeps coming on in reverse because on the stock headunit it would come on and display your parking distance sensors visually but obviously this isnt present on the aftermarket unit. I was also screaming timing chain, timing chain at one point! The engine is great in this car but the engine light was probably on because the intake runner flaps are faulty and the intake mainfold needs replacing. The light can be reset but it will come back on again after a couple of weeks. Keep up the great work and the realities of trading cars!

If you don’t do the maintenance on the DSG they have issues, you have to change the filter & fluid at a maximum of 40k miles and more like 30-35k miles if your TCU is tuned (which changes everything btw) the DQ250 and DQ500 DSG is a beautiful work of art, but they get hot so keeping good oil in them is super important if you want them to last. Mine is at 190k with a stage ll TCU tune from 034 Motorsport and it’s working flawlessly.

We bought a 2010 MK5 Jetta Wolfsburg with the DSG 5 years ago with 112k miles. Paid $4900. New timing belt but No DSG service history. Now has 140k, still shifts strong though the car was never abused. My mechanic advised to leave the gearbox alone at this point. 6 months after we purchased, VW pretty much rebodied the car under warranty for some light corrosion on the wings, boot and near number plate on back. Replaced everything other than 2 doors and the roof with a perfect paint match….under warranty. Other than mostly maintenance, the car has been the best value I’ve ever spent on a car.

This is a relatively early DSG. First in the golf GTI in 2006 and known to be complex and quite problematic like most dual clutch automatics. You would expect a new clutch at about 100k miles. The mechatronic unit in your car is 14 years old. That's why it's much safer to go manual at this age. Not because its less likely to break although that is probably true as well but if it does break its a lot cheaper. Like most complex things designed to improve fuel economy and emissions the durability was not the top priority here.

Radio coming on in reverse reminds me of the time I bought a Vauxhall Monaro. I was driving it home up the M1 when a tree & bench light came up on the dashboard with an alarm signal. I couldn't stop on the motorway and I was in a contraflow so I carried on to the next junction or services. The speed dropped and I became a mobile chicane. Then there was a horrible scraping noise and I was pulling my hair out. Once I was able to stop I checked the car over thinking that the exhaust had dropped off but, no it hadn't. I restarted the car and the light went out but the scraping noise was still there. Turned out to be the radio that wasn't tuned in to anything. When I got home, I did some digging in the manual .... When travelling over 50 miles, the "Take a Break" light will come on followed by an alarm. If ignored, it would turn the radio on getting progressively louder as the speed gets slower. I couldn't find how to turn it off so I took it straight back and bought something else.

Great video Matt, as always. I do have a soft spot for the GTIs, currently got one in Mk5 Polo guise. I’d be concerned that there’s no service history for the chain… these are known to have weak tensioners that allow the chain to jump, which is made worse as the chain begins to ‘stretch’ over time. Might be worth looking a little deeper if you want to avoid it rearing it’s head during your 6 month liability period.

Modern VAG. Just nothing but issues from Day 1 on the 07 Polo we bought new. Main Dealer were indifferent to it and us, VW were actively terrible at customer service: water pump was leaking from new, noticed after a few weeks. Work done under warranty but VW wouldn't pay for a new cambelt & tensioner because the warranty only covered parts directly damaged. They wouldn't budge, and I had to pay £130 to get my wife's 3 week old car back from the warranty repair. From then on it was just constant issues - ABS sensors were basically a service item, window motors failed, central locking that wouldn't, constantly blowing bulbs, and the ECU would periodically forget what it was supposed to do and need an on/off reset. Thankfully someone t-boned it just before the warranty expired and got rid of the problem for me.

I’m Welsh but when it comes to buying cars from Wales especially in West Wales Anglesey/Gwynedd I will steer clear. It’s in their nature to run a car they can’t afford and to not think twice about selling it on with a cumulative of problems to the next victim. Money is tight in these areas which exacerbates such traits.

Both! Both! Yup... Great vid Matt and we knew it from the start.... This is a money pit! Glad you took one for the team. Yes, a II or III GTI maybe, but not the recent stuff (and I do, too, prefer the Mark VI to the newer models).

I’ve had a few Golfs over the years and I love the DSG gearbox, I prefer it to all gearboxes Mercedes made, maybe apart from the classic 5 speed auto in the E-Class, when it’s paired with a six cylinder engine. I had to spend over £600 to get the DSG repaired in my MK5 several years ago, but it was worth it. That gearbox is quicker, more economical and of course, more comfortable than driving a hideous manual. I almost bought an MK7 Golf with the newer DSG before their prices had gone up to a ridiculous level and I’d only consider a Golf or Passat now with one of these. I quite enjoyed the comfort and steering column-based 7G Plus in my 2013 E-Class, but it was nowhere as smooth as the much older DSG in the MK5, which the MK6 would also have, I think.

Because they aren't as unreliable as the reputation proceeds. They make millions of these things, they are insanely strong. The guys who tune them can get double their rated torque which is 700nm. Secondly, you only hear about the bad ones. There are a few bad eggs. The previous first DSG they made was trash. This one the DQ250 of the mk6 is not bad at all but as soon as 1 goes wrong it's painted with the same brush. Case in point I've had one for 10 years with no issues. And I know many that have been equally as reliable.

The manuals have a weak clutch release bearing which gets noisy and the clutches themselves are weak - at least they struggle to cope with a re-mapped engine, which the older generation vw's had no trouble with. To be honest there's about half a dozen high cost common failures on the mk6 platform.

Volkswagen's (add Ford and Hyundai to that list also) implementation of DSG is a combination of a good ideas + engineering and cheap quality parts. Rather than engineering the unit to a price, it was built to a price. Hence why all these gearboxes are all so fragile.

Never buy GTI's with high milage...these kind of cars are usually bought to be driven FAST and combined with poor maintenance and not being driven accordingly usually result in exactly this kind of problems (engine oil bootle in the boot is telling me that is drinking oil aswell). DSG's are very sensible to the quality and freshness of the oil...and again very important how they're driven! 2 services in over 100k+ miles is very poor maintenance...these should be serviced with fresh oil and filter at every 40k miles(accordingly to the book) but I would say maximum 30k!Failing to do this will result exactly in this kind of problems!Don't want to spend £200 once in a while for a gearbox service will make you spend 3k a bit later down the road .

Granted i have the basic 3 door manual with tartan seats, bog standard everything but with A/c added , but these are great and very relaible, is a great everyday car, and on a sunday morning blast is hoot to drive feeling truly mechanical with great chassis, hydraulic power steering and a great manual gearbox. I never liked the mark 6 at all, and whilst the mvk 7 is much more modern it is vastly overpriced. Get a GTI MKV as a weekend car and enjoy!
