You are seeing the quintessential execution of "Anticipating Separation" by SFO's local tower controller. He anticipates that when he issues clearance the separation will be there between the two aircraft when it should. In this case, when the nose of the arriving aircraft crosses landing threshold, there cannot be any other plane at any point on his runway. I believe when I paused the video at 6:25, you can see the approach end of 28R. There is a single arrow pointing up the runway, then 4 arrow heads and then the left to right horizontal line. That line is the "Landing Threshold", the rule for runway separation starts at that line. Although the line is displaced from the start of the paving, the line is the start of the runway. When the nose of the arrival crosses it, the runway must be clear. And when his nose crosses it, the crossing departure has cleared within milliseconds! I have sat in San Fran Tower on a couple of occasions and it seemed at one point they were firing traffic from 01 L and 01 R while landing on 28 L and 28 R at a peak time and something was going though that intersection multiple times a minute and all met the above rule. They do this day in and day out. The arrival traffic speed is very consistent. The local controller has a radar scope for reference of final approach and knows the exact distance of the arrival. They position the crossing departures on 01 L and R "into position and hold" then tell them to "spool it up" to full power without issuing take-off clearance. At the right moment, contingent on 28 traffic, they clear them for takeoff and they launch. Over and over and over. But I got to admit, this one was razor close. Also note on rollout, the controller clears another aircraft to land on 28R, again anticipating that the aircraft rolling out will be clear of the runway when the next one lands. Bravo! I have never forgotten my visits there. If you want, go to Google and lookup the FAA's Air Traffic Control 7110 handbook, it opens in a PDF and then hit control +F and you can type in "Anticipating Separation" and find multiple instances for application.

I’m a student pilot, live in San Francisco, and listen to SFO tower all the time. They literally never tell departures on the 1s to “Spool it up.” Lmfao. The closest thing to this, but still far from it is “(Airline) ####, wind is XX@XX, cleared for takeoff, no delay, traffic is on X mile final.” Smh. Don’t ruin a comment by adding bs.

Every approach to SFO, watch out atc, they give descent clearance after CORKK point way too late that you always need speed brake while turning base! And another important point is that DME is at the end of rwy 28. Plan your descent profile accordingly! Happy landings!!!

I wanna know why the Capt of the flight reporting in at the end (18:40) was being pulled for "Legality" issues....at least that's what it sounded like to me.
@MrStunnd
@MrStunnd 5 жыл бұрын
Most likely just duty time issues. Captain had probably flown earlier in the day, and the flight they were about to operate was delayed so if he continued, he would go over his maximum duty day or not have enough legal rest before a trip the next day.

They had the depature in sight and decided it would be clear of the intersection when they land. A go around would be more dangerous because it brings the flight paths of the aicraft closer together.
@walterwlim
@walterwlim 5 жыл бұрын
At SFO, if it does get too close, the ATC will call for the go-around but that typically occurs further out before minimums.

@3138dan 5 жыл бұрын
@@hd4870x2 And that's my question, they had the aircraft taking off in sight and clearly witnessed him cross their landing runway while they were 100 ft below minimums. What would happen if that aircraft would have rejected his takeoff for example? Guess that's normal since a go-around option wasn't brought up by none of the pilots appart from the brief notification mentioned by one of them. Seems like tower was also well aware of the situation with visual contact. So in what circumstance do you call a go-around? The published missed approach for 28R is basically runway heading and maintain 3000, while I think most of the departures out off 01R are facing east there shouldn't be any danger regarding flight paths if decided to go-around. Cheers :)
@hd4870x2
@hd4870x2 5 жыл бұрын
@@3138dan You can perform a go around after DH if there is a saftey threat. On an ILS APP DH is the height above the THR at which you have to have the RWY in sight or at least visual reference. This does not mean you have to land no matter what. If the depature rejects takeoff it will most likely be able to stop in front of the intersection or clear it in time. But if I think there is a potentially risk of a collision I would perform the go around even above the THR. Would be pretty messy thats for sure. ;) As someone pointed out above, ATC at SFO is very experienced with these kind of situations and would call a go around or instruct the depature to reject before it gets too close.

@calahan59
@calahan59 5 жыл бұрын
@lolamonde5667
@lolamonde5667 5 жыл бұрын

I swear as the pilot of the Air France triple 7, I would be sweating trying to decide on whether or not the plane crossing the runway when I am just about over the numbers deems it necessary to go around. That controller must have been feeling himself😂😂

Interesting I could see how the taxiway sorta looks kinda like a runway to Air Canada if the other runway is closed and it looks like it starts earlier if your flying in Asiana air

So how does the plane steer into the gates or around the tarmac, I don't see the pilots using the "steering wheel".

there is a handle, called a tiller, which steers the landing gear. In this video, you can spot it right under the captain's iPad - it's that dark brown lever :)

They steer the aircraft using rudder pedals and tight turns are achieved by differential braking meaning tap simultaneously on the rudder and brake which are same pedals. The yoke or control column does nothing on the ground except for compensating for the winds. It only works in the air. So steering aircraft on the ground is with feet not hands. Hope this helps:)
