Highsmith Shoots Stevens, Claiming to Have Saved Crockett's Life | Miami Vice

Castillo and the team are staked out at the meet location, but there also is a battery of Stevens' men, including Crockett and Tubbs, who stop them cold; Tubbs moves in to arrest Hawkins and Escalante, and a shootout takes place between Stevens' men that weren't arrested, Hawkins' men and SRT/Vice. Numerous rogue cops and bad guys are killed. Stevens is leaving with some drugs to continue funding his organization when Crockett moves in to arrest him. Stevens tells him the organization goes to levels he wouldn't believe; suddenly, Highsmith shoots Stevens down, claiming to have saved Crockett's life, despite his protests to the contrary. Highsmith is on TV that evening gloating about his accomplishment, which gives Crockett an idea of just how high it goes as he turns off the TV in disgust.

I really liked the fifth and final season. Some gritty and powerful storylines that ushered back to its glory days during the first and second seasons. Such a shame to had to end here. Feel like this show could’ve gone on for many more years.

That was the last season - Johnson's mullet season. While I'm not a fan of the mullet on anyone - I do give him credit for trying a different 'do every season.

The entire episode's moral stances about vigilantism felt weak. They had to make Stevens and his group do things like murdering policemen, selling drugs and what they did to Johnny just to make the vigilante group seem evil. Because we can't have the nuanced idea of a disillusioned group of ex-policemen who fight against the system's corruption and actually solve crime when the justice system fails. It felt like they were making a criticism of the real life federal investigative bureas like the FBI and CIA by using this group as the metaphor for them. Even Crocketts and Tubbs dialogue felt weak when it came to voicing criticism about the group's action and vigilantism, at best getting Crockett to talk about convincing someone to not be a good cop. It was themes over substance.

In the opening sequence, Tubbs is not behind the wheel of his usual light blue Coupe de Ville, but rather a black Chevrolet Impala convertible. The reason for this is not explained and is not known if the viewer is supposed to notice it's a different car.
