Your so right . I was a big Metallica fan but lately I been listening more to Megedeth and I find their music is more consistent when you look at their whole catalogue . Sure there is 1 or 2 albums that may have been not huge favorites but any great artist with a long career is going to have an off album . I lost interest in Metallica after the black album because in my opinion they lost their hunger . Obviously Mustaines search for the best and most technical musicians that he could find in his drive to be better then Metallica shows in the music . I'm reading Mustaines book on his life and its one of the best biographys I have read . He's had a colorful life and its pretty funny the stories he mentions. Also because of listening to more Megedeth I started listening to Marty Friedmans solo work especially the Japanese stuff which is priceless ...lol. The book just made me a bigger fan of them .

The best lineup this band has ever had. I bought this album the exact day it came out in 1994, I was 17 and the world was mine! I have the utmost of respect for Nick Menza, he was such a wonderful and creative drummer.

25:00 It was so cool watching the reactions of the band members seeing the cover for the first time. As an Art Director, when you put hours and hours into something and present something to a client, you never know how they will react. Sometimes you just nail it, other times you get surprised at how different opinions can be. Plus, back in the day, Art Directors where really artists as well as craftsmen. You couldn't just change everything on a computer to your liking and try different things out. You had to have a very clear vision of what you wanted and how to get there, because this could take you weeks of work.

Both Vortex and FFF were written in this time period. I had heard a rumor, and I'm not sure if it's true or not, but if it is, it would make a lot of sense. I heard that Max Norman had this belief that that like, 140 or 160 bpm is the perfect time signature for people to absorb and enjoy music. So he wanted all the songs recorded at the same speed. So what ended up happening is that all the slow songs are too fast and all the fast songs are too slow. If that's the case, that would explain why Vortex and FFF were left off the album. Like I said though, I'm not sure how true that story is.

Same here. Megadeth has been my favorite band since SFSGSW. A friend made a tape for me with that album, and I loved them since. Countdown was definitely a departure from the sound of every album before it, but with Youthanasia came out, it was so drastically different to me. I loved the first 3 tracks, and Killing Road. But, man I couldn't get into the rest. It felt so polished, without any of the angst and rawness of the first few efforts. CTE still had that Megadeth sound, even it it was also more polished and commercial. I never got how people would say that it's their favorite album. It took years for me to understand how great that album truly is.

Youth was the last ever combination of tone and melody from the band. The heavy tone of Angry Again and the melody of Countdown that's what you will find in Youthanasia. There have been solid songs since riff-wise but not so much melody wise. It is also the last album where you will hear a descent lullaby / spleen type of song (A tout le Monde) and as much as I love DM' songwriting in Countdown (the most accomplished album to date for me) and Youthanasia, he has also proven since that he could write some serious cheese. I think what has been missing is this ability DM had to get the heaviness to serve the melody. In some of the 2000 stuff (past Risk) the dirt and the melody never seemed to combine, to me it always felt like Dave was trying to put two songs into one with two completely different vibes. "The hardest part of letting go" or "Dance in the Rain" which has a super catchy chorus and then goes completely thrashy bonkers a la Set the World on Fire, God knows why. The balance that was so perfectly found in the 90s just was not there. The solo have not been super inspiring either, fast and technical sure but again the grove and melody were absent. The departure of Marty Friedman sure took its toll in this department. Now the good news is, Dystopia while it has not brought the melody back certainly has brought the consistency. There is no more wandering like a lost soul, it is direct, it is brutal, it knows what it wants. It is RIP territory. Kiko does not have the grove almost jazzy style of Marty, that unorthodox streak that gave us insane solos but he certainly have the skills and a style of his own to make it interesting. Megadeth won't go back to their 90s style I know that because Marty Friedman is not there (and yet everytime I watch a recent video of his, he seems to play Megadeth or heavy metal stuff suggesting he might be over with the pop exploration?) but Kiko Loureiro may have a streak of his own that we are yet to see. We saw with Marty which means Dave Mustaine is more open to outside ideas that some journos may have suggested in the past. In that respect I am curious to see in what direction the next album will go. It is a strange feeling looking at Megadeth now because as good as Dystopia was in the pure RIP inspiration, I am under the impression that Dave Mustaine best chance of getting something big and new is by reuniting with Friedman who in recent times as I said has appeared to be rejuvinated by the metal genre. With Risk, it was one album too far for Marty, maybe even Cryptic he did not have the hunger or will or passion for metal. If he has that again, with Dave's current riffing... sky is the limit. Could you have three guitarists in Megadeth with Loureiro? Either way, since it seems unlikely to happen just now, it would be at least nice to see that Kiko Loureiro is really bringing something to the plate melody-wise. And yes Nick Menza did not get to see 60yo sadly but having watched some of his drum solos...I honestly don't know how you would manage to avoid some sort of heart failure, some of this stuff was more violent than playing squash. You are a drummer past 40, you better have some regular cardio checks for safety.
