I recently read an interview about Broderick Crawford (from 1957). This a quote from Vernon Clark (the producer of Highway Patrol) about Crawford: "Tough guy? You ought to see him work with kids. He's the essence of gentleness. Why, he'll even suggest bits of business they can do, and throw scenes their way." "But Brod's tough in another way - as a professional actor. I've watched him do 15 shows in a row, one every two days, without missing a beat. In our business that takes the strength of an ox." "And another thing: Brod won't use any stunt men. Last year, for one episode, Brod jumped off a bulldozer into a seven-foot ditch and wrenched his back. He had to wear a brace for four months."
@johanneslundie6 жыл бұрын
I can sense, from watching HIGHWAY PAtroL, that Broderick Crawford can play the toughest of the tough, but in reality is a refined, humane guy. It simply "comes" though. Three cheers to one of the greats !!

Found these this morning, now I can't stop watching. Brings back so many memories from my childhood. And the cars really put lead in my pencil. Love the cars, 56 Buick post cars are SO rare. Has anyone noticed they used Specials and Centuries? The Special had 3 portholes, Century 4. The. Century also had the 4bbl. high compression Roadmaster engine. This episode used a Special with the 3 piece back window. I had a 55 Century, also a 57 Super. The Super had a few interchangeable parts with a Coupe deville. Any post car from that era is rare. 57 merc too. I had a 57 Montclair with a built Lincoln 368 engine. Man, to have those days back.

You might want to have those days back because of the cars, but the world can't afford to have cars like that. They're big, noisy, polluting gas guzzlers which have no place in a world where there are more cars than people. Sure, I like them, too, but think about the problems they've caused - the start of environmental disaster due to their pollution - which is exasperated by the number of cars past and present.

Great series that I enjoyed as a kid, and I enjoy even more as an adult. I grew up in Los Angeles, and now I still recognize many of the filming locations. If you lookup the "Newhall incident from April 5, 1970", four California Highway Patrolmen lost their lives. The incident occurred just across the road from where the new amusement park, Magic Mountain was under construction at the time. My uncle named the park, and was the President of it when it opened in 1971. The very day before the Newhall incident, my uncle gave me a hard-hat tour of the park under construction. I was 12 years old. My mom and I ate breakfast at the restaurant, across from the Chevron filling station where the Newhall incident occurred, less than 24 hours later, so it is etched in my mind. As I type this, on my wall, over the computer, I have my uncle's large poster that he had in his office of Magic Mountain, of Magic Mountain. I also have his original hard-hat that he wore, as he supervised the park, as it was under construction. it is no wonder that I have a special respect for the California Highway Patrolmen, and for this series, in their depiction, so well, of the many perilous types of situations that they face.

If there were any of the cars with cowl mounted areals, I haven't noticed it. Now that I'm thinking about it, what about hubcaps? Those door covering banners, displaying a shield, are too plain and diverse for reality. The very same placard is on the "choppers," whirlybird helicopters. I expect I'm forgetting a thing or two. Jerry L Schneider, author of a book on locations seen in this series, says CHP only helped during the first season. I've not looked into it, but I'm thinking California, like any other state, pretty much stuck with one brand of cars. Many used Fords with long stroke V-8 engine blocks for high-speed chases. Chevys had short stroke engines, great for off the line bursts. In those days Chrysler products, Dodge, Plymouth, were somewhere in between.
