@@cmc6112 …two’s company, three’s a crowd ; however despite his arrogance, I doubt they would have had the same success without a singer with such a distinctive voice, song writing ability and the shear drive to succeed. He was talismanic. And he played the bass quite well.

I worked with The Police twice in 1979. They were largely unknown, having a single song on the radio, of course this one. Note the recording engineer hasn’t a clue Andy is singing an essential harmony. By 1980, they were a global phenomenon. It was a dizzying pace.

socca blau He is technically right. Pop music used to mean whatever was popular at the time, so anything from Bob Dylan to Metallica have been pop music. It wasn't until the early to mid 90s that the term pop music was actually used as a name for a genre.

Yep a fretless p bass. Sting played mostly fretless basses on early Police songs. He played upright bass in jazz bands before the Police.
