I use my trowel when I roll with the small ball so I get more pressure without hurting my hand. Great video. Thanks! It's good to be reminded to stretch.

I am also a runner (trail runner) and do many of these. They do help. I have used a foam roller and a ball as they work differently. The ball can hit spots that the foam roller cannot hit. I have had shin splints and IT band issues. They hurt so I agree with you 100% that stretching is important.

Rolling out muscles......looks so easy, hurts so darn bad while you're actually doing it! I really need to remember to stretch during and after my hikes!

My favorite stretch is when I put my leg up on a counter like I'm going to do a hamstring bend stretch, but instead I rotate my upper body towards the lifted leg side. This turning action stretches the outside hip and relieves sciatica pain.

"It hurts, but it feels good" LOL I picked up my Rawlogy ball during my thru hike of the PCT from 2 Foot Adventures in Warner Springs. It was one of the best 5 investments I made that year.

Thanks for the needed video. I really need to start stretching at the end of a day of hiking. The calf stretch is also one of two ways to stretch the plantar fascia.

Thanks for sharing! These look like great stretches to do daily..... I typically drive 4-8 hours to get to where I am going, these will really help....along with taking daily walks- I kind of fell behind over the winter, haha.

Love this video. Great tips! The only information I miss is how often/long you have to do each stretch.

I would stretch about half a mile into your hike and then definitely afterwards before getting back into your car.

How about how long should you hold the stretches?

I'm always super limber after hiking or exercising. So stretching after doesn't really work for me. I always stretch a little before exercise and stretch every morning.

There's another stretch people do for the 2nd smaller calf muscle. It's similar to the first one but it's almost standing straight with one leg just in front of the other, a slight bend in the front knee and the other leg a little bent with both heels on the ground and kinda sink in to it a bit. I can feel it at the bottom of the calf. Dunno what it's called.....but it's great too. Thank you! Sheffield England

Thanks for all the great stretching techniques! Been hiking for over 40 years now and have always stretched before and after hiking and sometimes during breaks. Any stretching techniques for someone with bad knee's? Have never really found anything that helps with this part of the body.

Tight quads, hams and calves can all aggregate knees.
