Back in 2019 I had my quickest time up San Jacinto from Marion Mountain Trail. I clocked in at 2 hours and 36 minutes to summit. You’re absolutely right about the rolling ankle remark. Coming down I stepped on a rock that appeared to be stable but once I had all my weight on it, it shifted and so I tripped and fell. When I had gotten back up I immediately fell right back down again. I ended up breaking my metatarsal bone on my right foot. I ended up hiking the remainder 4 miles back to my car in that condition. What a crazy day up San Jack that was

Oh man that's rought. If it makes you feel any better, I've had similar situations happen, including a broken foot. There's nothing that sucks more than loving to hike, run, and bike, and then breaking your foot...

Great to see you back doing "challenging" treks. Im going up next weekend but it's a toss up whether I do this route or Devil's Slide to PCT..thinking about making it a 2 day so I can bag Taquitz day 1 and Jacinto day 2. Thanks for all you do, your videos are a treasure trove of good information 👍

Glad the guides come in handy, and yea, trying to do a mix of tough and moderate hikes. I have a lot of folks who are more casual. Just trying to focus on hikes that I think are exceptional and skip the "meh" options. & I think the Tahquitz & San J combo would be a fun one. PCT to Saddle Jct, lots of decent backcountry spots to set up for the night.
@briansholer54553 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you've ever hiked Rattlesnake Peak off of Shoemaker Canyon (above the BTNowhere trek) but that's a fun one with some backstory to it (tunnels to nowhere) at the base. Done it twice already this year and it's a tough one, but it's becoming a more popular hike since it's only about 9 miles and not as hard as Big Iron on the other side of the canyon. Would be super cool to see you do a video on it
@Hikingguy3 жыл бұрын
@@briansholer5455 Oh yea that's a tough one. I did it a few years back. Didn't know anything about it, just saw it on a map and went for it. It was quite an unexpected day..... what's the story with the tunnel?

Cris another great video. Having summited San Jay 11 times now, it's still great to watch your vids. Twice by the C2C following you guide. Still the best C2C guide there is.(Highly recommended) I liked the view of the trail topo. I have mentioned it before, but it makes it look like you could bag Jean Peak and Marion Mtn. Problem being where to come down from Marion??
@Hikingguy3 жыл бұрын
Thank you 👍👍 and glad the C2C guide came in handy. Hoping to revisit the route with the 360 camera this fall. And hoping to do a bushwhack of Marion / Jean in this summer, but need to do some more recon around the area.

I remember doing this hike with some friends 3-5 years ago... They got creeped out because it was a day where it suddenly started raining even tho there was no forecast for rain that day. There was a missing person sign on the entrance. Some tourist nice old ladies from out of state made small tack with us but warned us to always be careful. One of the guys suddenly started coughing for no reason, like he had asthma at the beginning of the trail. There was a rattle snake on the way back out. Maybe the guys I was with were superstitious but they all got creeped out and we decided to head back down. I suppose I was a little creeped out deep down, but my curiosity kept wanting to go up higher and higher, but we were tired and it would have been 1 vs 3, so I obliged and we headed back down. We shared strange stories on the ride back home. I remember it was during a spring where there was mist and lots of greenery at the top, almost like the northern California forest, which was a nice change from all the dead desert hikes in Socal. Although we didn't complete the hike, I remember there were some abandoned cabins and stuff along the trails when we had made it up up there. It was quite interesting.... I want to do this again, but my partner isn't huge on "harder" hikes. I also can't go by myself since there is a kiddo in the oven and I got to take more care of myself now. Maybe in a few years.... I always felt this place calling out to me....

@6:30 There is a section with a lot of brush and rocks. How do you protect yourself from rattlesnakes there? Do you have high boots on or some shin guards?

Never had any problems with rattlesnakes. I've seen plenty but just give them space and walk around. You shouldn't have a problem.

Great video as always. Any chance you know if there is any water on the Wellman's trail this time of year? I am doing this hike on the 29th for an overnighter and know there is water at around 6.5 miles on Deer Springs. After seeing your video, it makes me want to take Wellman's down but want to make sure I am all set with water. Thanks!

Greetings, Have been enjoying your video and gear reviews. Alas, living on the east coast, I'm not able to try out any of your hikes. But, wanted to ask the Garmin Inreach Mini. Your review two years ago mentions that you use this in lieu of the other Inreach devices. Is that still your preference today? Also, might Garmin's product cycle be at a point where you would anticipate an updated version of the Mini Inreach? Appreciate your thoughts.
@Hikingguy3 жыл бұрын
Good questions. So now I use a GPSMAP 66i with InReach because I use the recording onboard to document my trails. But if I didn't need that, I'd probably just use the Mini. And I think based on normal product lifecycles, a new Mini is long overdue. But given all the supply chain issues, the lack of competition, and the success of this unit, who knows. Wish I had a better answer on that front.
