I introduced my daughter to this song almost 2 years ago and she loved it. The next week they were doing trivia in school for fun and she knew the answer to a question was Dixie Chicks because of this song. Only one in her 8th grade class to know who they were. (it was a tie breaker question, her group won) She also wears a T-shirt that says “Some of y’all don’t know what happened to Earl and it shows”. Only teachers get the reference.

The Dixie Chicks were very popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. Just changed their name to The Chicks last summer. “Cowboy Take Me Away” features a lot of banjo and more harmonies. Not Ready to Make Nice is their most powerful song.

The Dixie Chicks, famously cancelled by country radio in 2001 for telling a concert audience in England that they were ashamed George W. Bush is from Texas, dropped the "Dixie" from their name last year. Their clap-back album 'Shut Up and Sing' won the Album of the Year Grammy in 2007 and they were also part of Beyonce's controversial performance at the CMAs in 2016 and sang the National Anthem at the Democratic Convention last year.

The Chicks first earned my respect when they made fun of George W. Bush. Then I found out that I like their music. They lost some fans, but certainly made a lot of new ones. I now like a lot of country songs. They're not afraid of controversy. Good strong role models and some really beautiful songs.

Listening to country is like listening to any genre. Sometimes you gotta look around. How many times have you been listening to your favorite station on the radio and said, "Og, I hate this song!" and change the station. There is no one genre of music that you like every song. In 1960, there was a popular song song titled, Shop Around". It's excellent advice. ☺

She always skipped over this song when I was younger and then finally played it for me one day. I was SHOOK at the part about Wanda covering up her bruises. Really opened my eyes to the idea of domestic abuse. I love how even though the video is dark humor at its finest, they have that one serious moment with Jane Krakowski in the ICU and don't downplay the abuse. They have to take you to that low point in order to rally you in the cause to kill Earl!

The Dixie Chicks are from Texas and were one of the biggest bands in country music in the late 1990s. In 2003 the lead singer told a London audience days before the Invasion of Iraq that the band did not endorse the war and were "ashamed" that President George W. Bush was from Texas. There was a huge backlash in the country music community, including their music being banned by country radio and fans burning/destoying/tossing out their Dixie Chicks albums. This reaction destroyed the band's career. The band broke up for several years, but began touring again in 2010. The Dixie Chicks never regained their music success, though. In 2020, they dropped "Dixie" from their name because of possible racist connotations regarding the old South. They then released a semi-successful song "Gaslighter" You should really check that one out.

The Chicks are a band that you all would really like, both musically and politically. Recently changed their name and took Dixie out of it because they didn't want to be associated with the negative Southern connection to Dixie and the mistreatment of blacks. The Chicks also got in a lot of heat years ago while playing in the UK claiming the George Bush II "wasn't our president" when he did something stupid that they didn't back. Natalie Maines, the lead singer, was actually raised in the country music world. Her father is a famous steel guitar player and the other two gals are actually sisters.

For Female Friday: Loreena McKennitt, please! Start with "Mummer's Dance" live version. It is a slow song, but it has atmosphere, mood, story telling, and while there is no banjo, it uses a whole bunch of very odd and traditional instruments. You will love her voice.

So many other good songs! The other two band members mostly do harmonies, with Natalie on lead. Emily is the banjo player and the reason I chose banjo as an instrument to learn and Martie (my favourite member) plays the fiddle. They all play other instruments as well. Very talented ladies! @@jsjazz12 not true. They renamed themselves because during the early 2000's they insulted a sitting President on national television. Natalie Manes statef that she was ashamed of being from Texas because of George Bush was the president of the United States. Their popularity plummeted and many venues canceled them. They are the perfect example of " go woke go broke." What Manes forgot is that most country music fans are conservative Republicans. To this day my family refuses to listen to them. @@thomasrocker7408 - actually, @jsjazz12 is correct and Natalie Maines even explained that on Howard Stern last year. @@Mymloch The word Dixie is not offensive at all. Nobody knows for sure how it became a common reference to refer to the south. The Chicks were the biggest country group at this time. Then upon the eve of the Iraq war they were playing a show in London and Natalie, the lead singer said she was ashamed the President of the United States was from Texas and the many people turned against them, they were banned from country radio and people burned, stamped their CD's, protested their shows and they received death threats. Worth a deeper dive!! They got caught up in a huge scandal by protesting GW Bush many years back, too, that isolated them for a while from the country music world, but they've been making a comeback. They have always been bold, brash, honest, feminist, political, and unafraid to speak their mind. Worth discovering because they make some amazing music! Happy Female Friday, y'all!

The other girls (Emily and Martie) are primarily instrumentalists, and sing backup. Emily plays banjo, Martie plays fiddle and viola (plus probably other instruments for both of them!). They just weren’t shown with their instruments in this video. The singer, Natalie, is their longest-tenured lead vocalist. There were a couple other singers prior to her, when they were more of a bluegrass band. When Natalie joined, they adopted a pop-country sound, recorded the Wide Open Spaces album, and they shot to fame!
