When I went to college students who majored in non-marketable degrees knew that their degrees held little or no value to Corporations or even government agencies. They even joked about it. However, they pursued it because they loved their field of study and considered it worthy of their time. Often, they were the type of people who would have hated working for a large corporation. But today it seems that students expect the world to reward them. What a fantasy world. I fear for how they will adapt to the real world.

Kyle Spence - The ultimate blame for many of these kids pursuing worthless liberal arts degrees that have no commercial market value can be placed at the feet of their parents. Where were they when they decided to major in garbage? Especially if they are the ones paying for tuition. Parents who should know better should have warned these people that there is NO commercial value outside of academia for the liberal arts.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a liberal arts degree, knowledge is a good thing, learning is good thing, just don't take a degree like that and expect a lucrative career to follow immediately. That is not what those degrees are about , it's not about getting a job, that's an illusion the parents and the kid should be clear eyed about before one is undertaken.

I went back to school and graduated with a bfa with a focus in graphic design. One of the classes I had taken was photography. I got into a heated discussion with the instructor over whether or not most students would have access to their own dark room after graduation. She replied that "real" photographers frame what they want and then print and matte accordingly. I asked her how many students she had trained over the years and she replied "hundreds". I then asked, "how many of them are now making a living as a "real" photographer that she knew of?" She was forced to reply, "one", which of course made the photography majors really uneasy about their prospects post graduation. It's ok to study what you love, but you have to be able to provide for yourself in the mean time. Btw, I was the only male in a class of 19 (including the teacher), so how many of these girls were going to be able to get decent paying jobs working with their degree?

How can those people not understand how to evaluate what their major is worth though? Have they really learnt nothing in all those years before they went on to be a student? How come they haven't thought about how to get through life after they have graduated? It's the job of their parents and teachers to help them with those questions. It appears to me that something went wrong long before they went to college.

As someone that comes from a former socialist country I can vouch that socialism wouldn't favour social studies at all. In fact, no one would take you for real if you tried to have your way with social studies and BS feminism (remember, we were all de facto equals. So you'd be taken as a fool if you tried to pull SJW antics here). You would also not get the same wage as any kind of engineer. We actually valued our engineers and they were paid more than regular workers (although the difference wasn't as big). But yeah, socialism is basically meeting the basic needs of people and not the bullshit propaganda some/many people like to spew.

It's irresponsible of these colleges to even offer degrees where you have basically zero chance of employment after graduation. Most kids don't have a clue about the job market, so they may assume anything on offer is there for a good reason and proceed to pick some useless pseudo scientific crap because it's more fun and a lot easier than theoretical physics.
@curvecurve18 жыл бұрын
These gender studies and social science classes are expanding because teaching this b.s. is about the only job they can get with such a useless degree. Students are graduating and being reabsorbed into the schools as teachers to regurgitate this cr@p to a new batch of students in order to justify the horrible choice they made in picking their major. It's in the best interest of the ones 'lucky' enough to find a job to keep perpetuating this made-up science and ensure employment for themselves.
@alexc7737 жыл бұрын
+Tunti Turpaan I think that it's fine for colleges to offer such degrees, but the students who pursue them need to understand that these sorts of studies are a luxury, and not a direct means to employment or developing skills desired by employers. One should be able to study whatever one likes, and the value of a university education should not be weighed solely on its ability to funnel people into certain vocations. That said, I do think that colleges and universities need to make it abundantly clear that degrees with such majors are not valued in the job market.

end the huge swell of financial aid then. it's perfectly supplying what the market demands. except it's not the true free market. government is subsidizing, so that usually results in less discerning spending. without government financial aid throwing money at colleges via the huge swell of loans since and before 2000's, you wouldn't have such blown up departments / industries of useless majors that just shovel people to be activists not just in politics but HR policy and various other types of institutions with insane advocations

As someone who is a critic of the Liberal Arts, I have to admit some simple facts: First, Liberal Art classes are actually great in moderation - a well-rounded education is a great thing to have. Second, the longer that you're out of school, the less that your major will matter - having an accredited degree that can be verified is all that matters. After 2 years, your experience matters more. If anything, you may be better off graduating with a high GPA in Liberal Arts than flunking out with STEM classes. Third, all colleges overstate their value with all courses that they offer - they give a theoretical foundation, but 5 years of progressive work experience will teach more relevant skills than your school. That being stated, as a graduate of a nationally-ranked Liberal Arts College, a former Higher Education professional, and some who has extensive hiring experience in various industries, here's my bottom line: it is absolutely ludicrous for students to think that they are worth anything coming out of college. STEM (& Accounting) majors are most likely to have some relevant skills and generally make more $, but actual experience is still far more important. Most colleges are a ripoff, so students need to exercise good judgement up-front: look at your goals and your aptitude, then select schools and classes accordingly. If you're rich and/or don't care about finding a job after college (e.g. you plan to go to Grad School, you plan to work for a family business, etc.), then go wherever and study whatever. If you're not especially book-smart, maybe just try working out of High School, and possibly go to Community College while working. The military is an option. State Schools usually offer very cost-effective degrees if you wish to earn good money. Etc. Basically, kids should make informed decions and be accountable accordingly.

Its called an opinion. College is where we're supposed to be the very most free to express opinions and debate. Its why we have colleges.

It doesn't have any basis. If you want to learn about gender then study human biology and human evolutionary psychology.

I firmly believe that people should study what they are passionate about rather than just what they'll make the most money in or has the largest hiring pool. Because long term I believe you will be happier. But that does still mean you have to accept the cons that may go along with the job like smaller pay for instance.

Rebecca or no job... like a lot of these feminist majors get you. Maybe it isn't worth going into tens of thousands in debt to work at Starbucks anyways.

It's pretty easy to pick out excesses and whale on them with sarcasm and irony like its the whole story. I call it a cheap shot. Anyyhing labeled PC is automatically ridiculous to rightwingers, so can be dismissed. I think this does a lot of people injustice. They're kids, let them feel their intellectual oats as they learn to think critically. I was a conservative at Oberlin in the mid-70s and some people said pretty ridiculous things then, too. But we kept talking. That is less possible now.

Robert, I appreciate your sentiments, your voice has been heard. You are correct in your assumptions; they're kids which gives them benefit of being ignorant as long as it takes to grow up, just don't take too long to get past the idiot stage. Unfortunately, although they can wear the shield of youth, some of their rants are pushing the nation into positions any adult with even a modicum of intelligence knows is the wrong way to go. They resort to violence or threats of violence to silence people that don't share their opinions, they riot and burn police cars, vandalize property, bully and harm the weak. They don't know what they don't know but if violence is all they know to use, violation of Constitutional Rights, demand that the world acquis to their uninformed "feelings" for change, that's where we must part. I'm fully aware that this is not a uniform behavior pattern for all kids. I'm also aware that there are a limited number of radical types. But it only takes one to launch horrors upon our country. When they get to the point where you take off the training wheels, that gives me hope. I'm a child of the sixties, women wore flowers in their hair, men grew hair down to their ass, peace signs were everywhere, bare feet, Janis Joplin, and Levi's were in vogue. Peace, Love, Smoke Dope was their slogan, Woodstock changed the world. Martin promoted peaceful demonstrations; he changed the world. If they could control themselves and act like something close to an adult, I'm all for them. Otherwise, their youthful innocence dose not give them the right to destroy all that adults hold holy just to selectively entertain a segment of society, that have done nothing but suck up Gerber mashed green beans.

Props to Christina Hoff Sommers. But as for the current crop of humanities majors and the professors they'll become; "Underpay intellectuals at your own risk."- Jordan Petersen.

Socialism is often held up as a scarecrow in these talks, like a feminist dance teacher would get paid the same as a petroleum engineer if the system was socialist. Well, that might be the case in some alternate history where the soviet union continued or something. However, in these days, the more relevant comparison is the nordic contries. I assure that feminist dance teachers don't get a lot here either, if you want to get paid the good vocational choices are pretty much the same as in the U.S. But the difference in income are relatively smaller than in the US. Sure, there are differences due to the nordic countries being social democratic, but often times I find the images drawn of socialism, or the nordic countries, to be charicatured. Ben Shapiro is especially good at this sport.
