This has been so enlightening! I've been struggling between feeling like a 4 or a 9 for so long and wondering if it's possible to be both. The 9 SX is such an accurate description of me and explains so much!! The other subtypes were definitely relatable too. So interesting. Now I want to know how to not just accept who I am, but work towards overcoming the unhealthy behaviors and patterns that have developed over time due to my type.

One of the things I remember Uranio Paes saying in Beatrice & Uranio's podcast episode about the blindspot instincts was that 9s with Social last, are arguably the most mistyped people in the Enneagram because in addition to having the usual Type 9 issues with identity, in a lot of ways they really don't fit the descriptions of Type 9. He said has to explain to people that the nickname for Type 9, the Peacemaker, is actually kind of a misnomer because at its core the Type does not really want to MAKE peace so much as SEEK it, and each of the subtypes goes about this in a different way: SP 9s are like your typical comfort junkies/couch potatoes, while SX 9s seek peace through fusion with another person and/or immersion in something. So it's really only SO 9s that actually make peace externally (and ironically, they can often be mistaken as 2s because of this!). For SO-last 9s, the struggle is much more about boundaries vs merging.

Hey Hilary! I've posted before that I thought I was a 4w3. Now I'm pretty sure I'm a 9! I have seen myself if almost every other type and I'm realizing it's because I have been so out of tune with myself while trying to listen to what everyone else says is best for me. I have the stubbornness of the 9 though in that I tend to. It take action on their advice, which made me think I was a 4 (desiring to be unique and different.) However, I can relate to ALL 3 subtypes of the 9. It seems like I have used all of them often through out my life. I'm at a stage in my life where I am very much like the Self Pres type, wanting comfort, getting lost in TV shows and video games (and almost feeling like they ARE my life and I feel so connected to the characters), not wanting change because I fear loss of financial security, etc., I'm also an extrovert so I am quite social, but like you said, I always feel like I don't know my place in a social settings even though I always seem to be included whenever my friends get together. I am also a huge dreamer and fantasize about meeting the perfect significant other, but struggle to take action on actually pursuing anyone, as if I'm always doubting what I actually want in a relationship, or worried that it will fail and both of us will get hurt. Remaining alone is better than upsetting or hurting someone, or even myself getting rejected. How would you decide which is your Dominate Subtype when you relate to them all so much? Do you have any advice? Thanks in advance!

This is often true of a 9. We are mergers. I think the 9 cam develop all 3 subtypes because they would need all 3 for survival in childhood.

I don't fully relate to the envy part as well, but honestly, I still accept myself as a type 4. When it comes to core feeling in the enneagram, you won't necessarily recognize it within yourself because most of the time it is only in the subconscious mind.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone else, but I am a 9w1 so/sx enneagram. As an so/sx, I have never cared about myself until the very last moment. I'm very focused on others, focus on general people and they're needs. But for me? I don't care about myself, and that's why finding my personal identity is so hard, cause I don't focus on myself. But that doesn't mean I don't have sp tendencies, like focusing on comfort, being lazy, and safety oriented, etc. It just happens on the very last moment. When I feel sick, I rest to try and feel better. When I'm sad I indulge in comfort foods and cuddle in a blanket, but otherwise, most of my energy is spent to others. But behaviors I exude with low sp is related to... being reminded to eat and drink, being forced to go outside and exercise, ignoring warnings related to safety and accidentally do extremely dangerous things, etc. To those with sp or sx Dom type 9s (or other types) as well, feel free to explain more of your subtype because I am sharing this for education purposes. I'd love to learn more about the blindspots of different subtypes! Even if you're not, feel free to say if you agree, disagree, or something else, I'm all ears :D

thank youuu!! I keep questioning my subtype (and even my type sometimes) but this has helped reassure me - I feel like you put it really well and in a way I haven’t heard before, y’know? (probably helps that you’re also a social 9 so you get it ahahhahaha) I feel like sometimes descriptions of us can fall flat because they start emphasising community and leadership (in terms of Actual community I vibe with it definitely but hearing the word, there’s kind of a disconnect if that makes sense? like I always think of being dragged out somewhere and sitting trying to politely talk to people) then they start talking about working hard - and that’s fine, some people are definitely like that - but it makes me kinda question it again.. either that or feel like a lazy mf, which isn’t entirely untrue but yeah in some ways... idk, you wouldn’t think it’d make that much of a difference, but I think the social 9 descriptions are kinda more tailored towards so/sp? I'm in the process of working out my type and this video helped me understand that I might be a 9 SX because the other type I'm debating about is 4 (though I relate to all types, so I'm probably a 9?). I'm definitely a 1 on 1 person, I can be social at times, but don't relate much at all to self preservation.

I am 90% positive I am 9 but taking the test from the enneagram institute, I had a VERY close percentage from type 4. I feel like they are opposite in a lot of ways but I relate to a lot of each. I guess I would more closely lean toward a SX subtype because of that? I am not sure of the subtypes.Oddly, my MTBI is INFP but almost 50/50 with an INSP.

Subtypes and Stances play a big part in this. I can honestly say as a type 9 myself there are things that I relate too also in the 4. But I would say because you are 90% positive you’re a 9 then that’s probably your type. 😃

I have a question. Is it possible to change your wing and subtype due to age or stress? I am pretty sure I was a 9w1/sx when I was younger but due to chronic stress over the years I swear I have changed to a 9w8/sp. I'm not sure if this was possible. I'm excited for this series!!

Yes! You usually use one wing more in younger years and then switch over to your other wing as you get older. I did the same thing! And we want to use all 3 subtypes so your dominant one changing does happen too. Thanks for sharing!

I really do like this book. But I am a sexual nine and it did not tell me why I am the way I am. It explains it for the other types, for instance, social eights act the way they do because their mother was threatened as a child. But why do I merge with people and have no sense of identity? It also aggravated me that the sexual nine in the book shared her experience, but was so careful not to place any blame on her mother and tip-toed around any possible actual clarity as to WHY she acts the way she does. I feel more misunderstood than a 4... and I feel like my experiences aren’t valid and maybe that sexual nines don’t really exist and just live in enneagram limbo. Rant over.

I'm very very "classic" type 9, but I'm not sure if it's possible to be more than 1 subtype? I feel like I'm equal parts SP and SX... maybe slightly more SX when I was younger but slightly more SP now? Edit: Also I just learned about the countertypes... they're pretty crazy and make it way harder to guess other people's type LOL! I've spent mental energy trying to decide if my brother is a type 3 or a type 7... he seems kinda sorta like both but yet not, and also kind of 9ish but seemed too extroverted and a people person? So maybe he's actually a counter-9! Hahaha
