Based on this and a story Mark Lanegan told in his biography about how Layne and him wrote and recorded the Mad Season song Long Gone Day, I think Layne would have been a gifted music producer. Mark talked about how Layne knew how all the mixers and recording devices worked and how they on the spot came up with the Lyrics and melody for Long Gone Day. People confirm Laynes story here of how he writes melodies and lyrics. He just went into the booth and it poured out of him. The guy was an unbelievably naturally gifted musician. While basically teaching himself the guitar he wrote two of the heaviest, most interesting songs on Dirt - Hate to Feel and Angry Chair. His ear must have been really well tuned, even if he wouldn't be considered a virtuoso.

My husband recently told me that Layne's voice prevented them from getting more radio play. Isn't that fucked up? It was too amazing for the stupid fucking radio. There are 2 versions I've heard about the Mike Starr situation. 1: He fucked one of the guy's girlfriends and they confronted him and he said he quit, but the next day he changed his mind and they said, "too bad! You're out!" 2: He was doing too much heroin It must have been really bad since they stuck by Layne during his addiction, or they hadn't *really* seen bad until Layne. Who knows, but heroin was involved. I believe they threatened to fire him if he didn't get help and he said he quit, then said he didn't want to quit the next day, and same ending: they said "No, you're out!" I do know that it got so bad with Layne they had him in his own bus. But I think the guys knew they had something special, no matter what, and wouldn't end it, just because of the smack habit. Plus, they loved him. They were brothers. After watching Mike Starr on Celebrity Rehab, I can see him as being a total narcissistic asshat that could easily be someone guys would want out of their band. Did you see that show? He walked around saying "my band" like he was in AIC still. Those were the best years of his life and he ended up in a van doing drugs with his dad. It's good to have goals.

He seemed like a very kind person and so I have heard from people encountering him.

It's heartbreaking, for sure. Another sad thing is that Layne is almost always overlooked when there is talk of musicians that have passed. It's like because he was strung out for so many years, they discount him as "just a junkie". Alice in Chains is also overlooked a lot as one of the bands who came out of Seattle in the 90's, but they were one of the most influential. More bands started sounding like AIC as the 90's went on than any of the other bands in the "grunge" scene. At the Grammy's the year Layne died, when they went to the part that recognizes the musicians lost, they completely ignored him, and all the guys in the band got up and left. You're right - everyone who has talked about him has said what a kind, gentle, talented and very funny person he was. And you can see that all over KZbin. Have you heard of Mad Season? That's a side band he was in with some guys from other Seattle Bands. He did the artwork, which is really cool, and it's also a great album. You can probably find it on YT.

They dressed like it,he alwys joked,.we were so broke we couldn't even afford to dress in glam like all the early 80s guys lol. Knew it wasn't nor ever cool cuz it wasn't different or unique just came from bowie and stranded out to lame weird shit. Like comparing nirvana to them as always, they were legit Punk And aic were metal. For back then. Grunge didn't even exist what so ever yet when aic and nirvana came out .. they had their title, n brand genre they liked n loved already. Grunge was just a style we all thought. Apparently not lol But 90s were f King and so greatful I grew up then an got to see these gems live. Rarely a f camera but never forgotten cuz was worth remembering an clear as day. Today's music is f depressing..for lil kids only or sum weird shit. 0 talent or hard work nor originality. Yet styled as "unique " bla blah Same shit. But these dudes are the pioneer of f rock/metal for me not metallica etc. To each their own. But more relatable and simple 90s blue collar kids,teens, adults loved them. An still no band like them..doors,zepp,pj ,SG,MlB..are rare n great cuz once they start f playing their instruments you KNOW who the f it is! .. That's True Masters of their craft. No doubt. To know them was to love them. Didn't have to be hardcore metal bad ass..they totally repped the silent blue collar mid class families..chill And bad ass with out trying hard or stunts,fights,stupid shit. Sure they didn t want to be that dark, but they are martyrs for our generation. As layne said,.can't explain my voice..i sound like a Lark lol. N jerrys writing skills an guitar skills are out of this f world. Deff most sought out guitarist ever. N he's still his f own an same gnarly relatable tunes keep coming. Can't think of one f Band honestly who lost their soul one,singer and co leader,and came back,.with Not a replacement..but another chill cool natural dude to continue doing what they love with and be f so successful as aic. Jerry, mike, sean, Still f get to do what they love an always Hoped they could still do even old..wasn't even in jerrys head to ever continue with AIC, solo shit didn't gain as much course.. Yet he brought Alice in chains back and that nostalgia n hey mfrs were Still Here! An still f slayn audiences, selln just as many records, sold out shows.. After 17 ,20 f years of no aic anymore an brought it back full f force. Most actual metal an bad ass move in band history really. I wouldn't be overly surprised that it was his favourite. I realise that a lot of the songs on various AIC albums were very personal, but the entire Mad Season album just seemed like one big autobiography. It really is so harrowing and beautiful.
@jasonpeters98654 жыл бұрын
Its without a doubt best album of 90s. Makes me think "what if?" What if more 90s bands collaborations happened. Cuz it seemed the few times it happened? Pure magic, that sounded completely different fr the bands collaborating. (TOTD, Audioslave, Mad Season,Velvet Revolver) Wouldve love see a Smashing Pumpkins+NIN Collaboration. Janes Addiction+Alice in Chains collaboration. STP+Toadies collaboration. Bush+Silverchair collaboration. Pearl Jam+David Crosby collaboration. Nirvana+REM collaboration.(actually that was in works in early 1994. Michael Stipe said Kurt and him were going do something together Summer 94.) Man, fucking bullshit..Just imagine that sound? I wish Kurt just quit Nirvana. He had more enough $$$. I think Kurt was sick of "loud, punkish, rock star" thing.

The writing couldn't have been any bolder on that wall. There are so many interpersonal issues and such a high degree of resentment in what Layne is saying in this interview. It's even easier to spot in his 1996 interview with Rolling Stone because of course there was no audio of his soft-spoken and almost childlike tone. It's interesting to note that substance abuse self-help groups like AA and NA point to resentments as the reason some never achieve sobriety. Besides what we heard here in regards to band-mates, press and The Recording Academy, there's the accounts of Layne's troubled relationship with his father and his late girlfriend who he would use with regularly. That's more than enough to kill a person that doesn't know how to cope in a healthy way. This is just what I see as a person with years of experience in the midst of substance abuse, mental illness and suicide. Doesn't make it so. But I do believe it's apparent enough. There's no pretty way to put it in my mind, it's simply tragic.
