Syd Michalyshen is a physical specimen. She qualified for the 2021 Games with only 3 years CF experience and her local coach. She finished 21st. With her tools the sky is the limit. So for 2022 she moved to Boston to train under Bergeron, and performed worse. For 2023 she stayed with Bergeron and got even worse, failing to qualify for the Games ... and not coming close in her SemiFinal. Any serious CF athlete who looks at her trajectory under Bergeron will stay away ... which is 100% why he's shutting it down

I've actually seen what you describe in affiliates, owners make their favorite members coaches, even pay for their level 1 and they forget to factor in "is this person actually competent and able to teach people things". It always ends up with non of the members improving and that coach typically leaves within a year because it's too much work.

Controversial take but hasn't HWPO used the same Bergeron recruitment strategy? They took Mal from Townsend after she crushed her first Games, they took on Hopper after he beat Medeiros and Panchik at semis. They recruited Harry Palley and he brought Barnhart with him. Katrin is a decade in. Last year the only newcomer that qualified to the Games that HWPO programming produced was Nic Joyal...

Always pushing those buttons, man, I can only agree with you. Back in time, when I started my CrossFit journey in Mexico I was so naive that believed in Bergeron, I even bought his book and in 2018 games I saw him and asked him to put his autograph on my book/his book, he acted so arrogant and then I started seeing her only female athlete fading not progressing and not keeping her title, the book is just a description of the games when Katrin won, thanks for this.

I followed Comptrain programming for years but it started to get stale, lacked to include so many movements, very repetitive. Then the app came along, free programming basically disappeared although Ben had said it would always be there, they started limiting everything, had a million different tracks, new coaches "taking over" with new programming. It just got very very messy. And then the athlete interviews, they were all spilling out the same speal, it's like they were brainwashed, can't explain it better. I just didn't identify with it anymore and decided a change was in order. Best decision ever.

This just seems like a classic chicken or the egg analogy: Does the untapped potential of an athlete negate the ability for a coach to use them as an example for the Coach's resume or can a coach trumpet his professional success due to the success of the athletes? Athlete and coach relationships come and go all the time But it does seem that as Comptrain grew the group of athletes, the natural attrition was bound to happen. He and his program are not for everyone. He probably didn't do himself any favors by being one of the 1st ones on the coaching scene and never shyed away from promoting himself and his program. Will Cole be a great head coach? time will tell. At the end of the day, Ben just rubs people the wrong way and he comes off as pious but I believe his heart is in the right place. Crossfit needs him and others like him in the space to keep pushing the sport forward or it will wither and die. Don't like his program? That's fine there are plenty others that will probably fit what you're looking for and thats great. Just another day in the Crossfit news cycle

Typically agree with your pov but I think you've missed the mark a bit here, bud. Just sounds like you're bitter about something tbh but that's just like my opinion...man. He had two CF champs in his camp and didn't Brooke and Cole make the games every year under him? That's gotta be worth something. Also, I don't think you can really say Katrin got worse? She won twice and was consistently top 10 while with Ben and then didn't qualify after she left. Nowadays I feel like Ben is like a really great college coach. He can take promising athletes get them pro ready but they'd need to move on to take that next step. There's nothing wrong w/ that. I think that just might be the evolution of the sport . Also what's your problem with Cole? Dude is def a fan favorite and obviously knows a thing or two to make the games 10 times in a row.

Do any of these camps really make the athletes? All of the well known camps get athletes that are good in the first place, Rich always said there is no secret source just hard work and consistency. There are some exceptions, but it seems that the athlete is how they are, be that a strength or endurance or like Justin not outstanding at anything just consistent. Couple of examples- Tolla is strong like bull but all of his work on his endurance had pretty much no real noticeable effect in his placement but he was still strong. Mal and Jason had great rookie years and made big improvements the next year but I argue that was more from better performances at the games than overall fitness improvements my reason being if Matt’s coaching was so amazing why didn’t Jake Marconi qualify when he was Mal’s traing partner all year. I’m probably wrong but they all seem overrated 🤷‍♂️

Not typically a fan of these types. Ben can do whatever Ben does. Cosches often get to much credit in other sports too, as per your Brady example. Doesnt mean Billichek isn't a good coach but circumstances matter in team sports. Lots of players have become great coaches. But circumstances matter. Mark Jackson was fired as the Warriors were developing and becoming great. Kerr now gets the credit (both former players mind you). CrossFit is special in the regard that every player can train whever they are and be elite. There are no teams. Lots of diversity. But an athlete qualifying or not shouldnt be on Bergeron. Circumstances matter from both sides. Gui didnt qualify but now Luke Parker did. Gui worse because of Mayhem?

You kept saying "this person left and went to HWPO and they are now better". Over and over again while saying that making Cole Sager the coach is probably a bad thing. Without once pointing out the fact that the person that makes HWPO so great was a great games athlete. Why? I don't know, maybe because that would have crushed the whole story line of the video? Maybe they are making Cole Sager the coach trying to replicate what has been done at HWPO and Mayhem. Maybe Comptrain is tired of being outperformed by former games athletes (as coaches) and they feel that Cole can do that for them. Can he? I have no idea. I do agree that a person that is good a one job is not necessarily the person to run a company that does that job. But there are now at least two big gyms that have done it. Maybe Cole can do that for Comptrain. I don't think so, but I do think it was wrong of you to just skip over that angle entirely. Makes the video just feel half assed.

My biggest issue with him is always tries to sound like smartest man in the room. Uses big words no one uses and serves no purpose. Coaching should be simplistic. The people you are trying to reach shouldn't have to google terminology on top of the plan for the athlete.
