Just amazing with the right man on the job building a top imp engine, I did one myself years ago just for the road it went well but that is on another level keep up the good work

my first car was a 1968 super imp mk2 i had always wanted to tune the engine but never had the money which in retrospect maybe was a good thing as i might not be here today really loved that car wish i had in now, really enjoying your channel and your expert knowledge on tuning the imp engine .

i grooved around the piston skirt on my 2 stroke lawn mower --it screamed like a formular 1 . i noticed that some engines now spray the skirt

Aside from decibels did the megaphone help your power curve, I believe finding the overall length and taper is somewhat of a trial and error process and can affect what induction length works best, a few more variables for you to contend with!

to be honest i was concerned that the exhaust fumes were been hoovered up by the engine so was looking out for it all going wrong! torque seemed very similar so perhaps it would have been better if it had cold fresh air !

Glad to see somebody still enthusiastic, I got into Imps in the late 80's after working on a few but by then most of the development had died off. I sold my last one in 2006 with a mountain of bits I don't want to think to hard about how much for. From what I can tell here just over 100HP is about all that can be had NA and it's mostly down to the head restrictions which puts paid to all those old wives tails of old about mega HP. Didn't Rootes or somebody make a head with downdraught inlets? was it any better?

What did Ian Carter reckon was the optimum length from head face to exhaust exit....as it 40" or 42"? I had my system running across the rear on my Davrian and it worked well using Ian's measurement.

Not sure, unfortunately i never met Ian. my exhaust man Will parry says the tells me the exhaust should end half way across the rear panel, personally i have done back to back runs on single silencer and twin silencer across the back and not seen any massive gains more “robs and gains” the longer system helps the mid range and falls off earlier and the short produces good top end but fluffy mid range. maybe that’s why the rally cars mostly run across the rear silencer?

@@thehillmanator I'm sure that's right. Ian was regarded as The Guru in the day and apparently did a lot of testing on different lengths before deciding that 42" was the best overall compromise for racing.

Hi Andy, I just bought a collection of imp engines and mostly comprises of #31 heads, can there be much done with these heads or are they to restrictive on a performance level. I do hill climbing.

yea to be honest the only head with enough meat around the roof of the inlet port is the sport 180 casting

Torque increasing all the way to 7100 with lots of lift suggests choking at the valves/seats. If you can't fit bigger valves in, I'd increase the inside diameter of the seat relative to the valve diameter, even if that means eliminating any backcut on the seat. A 1.5mm diameter relative change (eg. 0.5mm reduction in valve diameter and 1mm increase in inside seat diameter) should add enough air for torque to peak at 8500 RPM if the ports/carb can keep up.

Good name for that engine 👍 sounded nice even through my phone speakers! I understand the torque is superior and nice to see a long stroke revving high like an imp engine should.....but what is the hp number?

Having watched your videos for a while now, it occurs to me that the original Imp conrods I saw in one episode appeared offset. Is the Imp engine a De Saxe setup? I'd be interested in a reply. Love the Super Imp engine, hope it goes well on track.

hi yes the original rods have the caps split on a angle, this is because the 875cc bore is only 68mm so the only way the rod will go down the bore is if it’s split on the angle.

I remember Ray and his successes in special saloon racing winning the 1967 BARC championship outright in an 850cc Imp for Team Hartwell. He continued his successes into the early 70's in the 1 litre class and was up there with the other legends such as John Homewood and Ray Calcutt. I had a 998cc conversion done by him to my 1974 Imp at Hartwells in Bournemouth in 1976. He did a great job. He was a very knowledgeable guy and very pleasant to talk to. You can be proud of your dad.
