After watching your video 5x, I recently installed my snorkel onto my 3rd gen 4runner. The snorkel to the elbow and to the air box was the biggest challenge even when I had a friend to help me out. But we got it on completely after 6hrs later haha!

Man where we're you last year when I needed this. The only thing I would change is don't drill into the A pillar. I used earth magnets instead
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
Those must be some incredibly strong magnets. From what I saw with this install Anwar did for me, you have to push the snorkel with a fair amount of force towards the A-pillar to get it riveted. I like the fact that the snorkel is securely attached to the A-pillar because if you hook the snorkel with a branch while 4wheeling and the branch holds on tight, it could be a nice long lever to tweak your fender because that's where the snorkel is securely attached to the body. Once you make the commitment to this install, what's a few more holes to drill? Even if you decided to remove the snorkel one day and get a replacement fender, I don't think having a few holes in the A-pillar is a big deal. You could literally fill them with some bondo and put touch up paint over them and you would probably be the only one that would ever notice.

I did this job a couple years ago in the dead of winter in Boston. I wish I would've thought of buying a torch then... This Amazon snorkel has held up surprisingly well and after 3 years, still hasn't faded or cracked in any way.

I had ordered and installed a snorkel kit on my 2001 4runner. I seen this video when I was in the middle of replacing my core support. I had looked in side the stock intake tube (the one before the air box) there was more mud and dirt then I wanted to see, it had made its way into the air box and my truck still has the fender liners. One suggestion is to remove the corner light, you will be able to reach your hand between the fender and the rubber elbow. Made it a bit easier to help work the elbow over the airbox.

Thanks again for one more excellent video. I ordered a snorkel on ebay 4 days ago and it arrived from Malaysia today! Though most will install for the coolness factor, I will be mounting one to limit the dust from the backroads that I frequent... and to prevent mice (nasty, bad gollum) from crawling into the airbox to nest, tearing up the filter and choking off air intake. Will be installing shortly however I am concerned with using RTV silicone as it will make it very tough to remove the airbox like for example when routinely cleaning the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. The video on O2 Sensor Replacement shows how to clean the MAF sensor for a 96-98 4Runner where you need to remove the airbox to get to the MAF sensor. If you are having a warm engine non-starting issue, the MAF sensor might be the culprit. Seeing how hard it was to get the airbox connection to the snorkel (Seannie's "special" technique aside), I am thinking the RTV will make a pick tool technique tres difficile. A tightened hose clamp should suffice no? Its not like the connections need to stay watertight for 15 minutes to make code. Is it possible to just cut the OEM tube to length and fit a small portion of the shortened rubber elbow as a splice between the snorkel and OEM tube? With one inch of overlap, the diameter of the splice will be maintained even under max boost (from the supercharger!) and the original design parameters for the OEM tube is maintained all the way to the snorkel. I am also wondering about attaching the snorkel with double sided tape rather than drilling rustable drill holes (rust is an issue for some of us). for example : www.amazon.com/dp/B005SRA7X0/ref=dp_cerb_2. I know some have used the tape on the A pillar. If you have ever waded through a crossing, you will know it is water thrown around throughout the engine bay by the fan that is the real enemy and with the deckplate mod, your air intake will be just fine.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct that using RTV will make removing the air box more difficult. If you're worried about being able to get the MAF sensor off, you can easily remove the cruise control box to give yourself the necessary room to get in there with a screwdriver to remove it off the air tube. But, if you're worried about the need to get the air box easier, don't use the RTV. The RTV is just extra insurance to make more of a water proof seal. I'm not sure what you're talking about with the splice. Watching Anwar install this on my rig, you have to push the snorkel with a fair amount of force towards the A-pillar to get it riveted. Double sided tape just doesn't seem like it would hold firm enough. There is also the issue if you hook a tree or bush branch while 4wheeling. If you only have double sided tape holding it, you could end up with body damage as the pipe would act like a long lever putting force on the fender. If you silicone the holes, I don't see an issue with rust. But, if you try out the double sided tape, let us know how it works out for you.
@timmacrobert11
@timmacrobert11 4 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Good points. I will probably bolt the snorkel to the A pillar but will utilize a 2 sided foam tape as a gasket and adhesion for the rest of the snorkel. The splice I am referring to is has to do with the OEM duct assembly and elbow piece. Rather than use the rubber elbow piece as per your video, I wonder if it is possible to utilize the existing OEM assembly (part # 53807-35020) by keeping the OEM elbow and airbox in place and cutting a portion of the OEM duct assembly to length to butt up close to the snorkel. A small length of the rubber connection tube could then be cut and pushed over the duct assembly at one end and the snorkel at the other essentially forming a splice between the two. Airbox would not need to be removed and a piece of PVC pipe would not be required if the overlap of the spice is 1.5'" or less. This would only work of course if the OEM assembly OD is close to the rubber splice ID which is what I really am asking I guess.

Hey Timmy. I hope you’re doing well. I have been a fan of yours for a while now with your videos having helped many of my Toyota operations. I currently have a 98 5 speed that is acting up. I bought it probably 3 months ago now and it drove fine for the first month or so minus a sticking clutch which has been fixed. It started driving weird some time ago by basically redlining at about 2,000 RPMs and it would also shake and lunge if you tried to get past that RPM. I replaced spark plugs, wires, coil packs, and fuel filter with no solution. Well one night I checked the fuel line by cracking it open a bit. Nothing came out. Bad fuel pump it seemed. Swapped that for a new one and then the car wouldn’t start. I had been speculating a bad crankshaft position sensor before that but a new one didn’t fix it so I put the old one back in. After a lot of forum reading and video watching I got a new camshaft position sensor and put that in as well as the crankshaft position sensor and car started. Well I got it out on the road and did a turn in second and it stalled. It was weird because I wasn’t really slow enough for it to stall. Anyway on the way back to carport it stalled a few more times, even in neutral. When I go to start it it fires up and idles for a while. I guess right when it gets up to regular temperature, it stalls. It will start again when it’s up to temperature but will stall soon after. Something weird about the idle is that it will sort of fluctuate a bit more than I think is normal, but my dad says it’s normal. Something good is that it is giving a code. P1300. A strange one that usually leads to an ignitor. Swapped it for one with the same model number and stuff from my dads car and still the same code. I looked at the harmonic balancer and it doesn’t have any play. I have checked most of the wires and plugs running all over the place and relays and I haven’t run into anything suspicious. The injectors also sound fine. I’ve gotten a stethoscope to listen to them and they each sound rhythmic. I’m stumped. And so are my researchers (parents). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Hey Ed, sounds like you've been going through it with your rig. The IAC controls air to the engine at idle and under deceleration. Maybe something is going hay wire with the IAC at operating temp but it functions fine when it's colder. I'm not an expert at diagnosing problems like this and I would be doing the same thing you're doing by doing plenty of research and eliminating things that are probable causes of the problem.

Thanks for restoring my sanity. I knew I had seen you perform that process. I wanted to make a request for a future video. I understand the concepts of toe, camber and caster. It would be beneficial if we all had a 'Timmy certified' tutorial video breaking down those (3) concepts. It takes a bit of analysis to grasp exactly what caster is doing. And what burns my bacon is the KZbinrs posting up hack videos claiming that they are able to modify caster. One guy claims he can use extreme adjustments in the camber to actually modify caster. It is shaky (dangerous) advice at best. I realize that caster was designed into my 3rd Gen by the engineers over in Japan. Of course the one exception would be when an owner installs those ball joints that allow you to actually move the caster. And there's your next sic mod video, ball joints that allow for adjustable caster. As always, thanks for everything.

The engine sounds exactly the same. All you're doing is raising the air intake from inside the fender to the top of the A-pillar. It's not like removing the stock air tube that has the resonator box and putting in it's place one of those Airaid straight pipe intakes that makes a pretty significant sound change to your engine.

I did two changes to mine. 1. I put a gasket around the snorkel where it meets the body so dirt and crude doesn’t get behind it. 2. The rubber elbow on mine wasn’t long enough so I made my own which I like better cause it’s secure and has a larger opening
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. What rubber piece did you purchase to make your own? That sounds cool! You do know that dirt gets behind that fender area as evidenced by the fact the air filter gets dirty with the old air intake system? I guess because of that gap on the front where the snorkel meets the body you're worried about debris, maybe mud getting in through there? I could see some grit could make it's way in there. The snorkel fits tight to the body on the top and bottom sides so it's just that front corner. I've heard some guys have fashioned some type of molding to insert in that gap and that would be another way to prevent crud from getting in there. Or possibly from your tire inside the wheel well. That's interesting your rubber elbow wasn't long enough. Ours was plenty long to get a good connection with the snorkel and sit well in the body opening to the air box. The elbow only has to fit over the snorkel by a couple inches so you can get the hose clamp in place and securely attach the elbow to the snorkel. I guess the manufacturer sent you a defective elbow.

Great video! Wish you’d put this out a year ago. I too own a 98 runner limited with factory Elocker. Any who, I took mine off recently because I had to replace the air filter box. The original cracked in several places after being involved in an accident. My question is, instead of riveting the snorkel onto the A pillar, do you think it’s a good idea to use self tapping screws? I go wheeling often and since the accident, I beat it, not baby it. Lol.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
I think a rivet would be better. I don't think that A-pillar metal is very thick for a self-tapping screw to bite securely into and not strip out. A rivet would guarantee to hold really well, and if it ever failed, you'd just drill it out and install another one.

Cool sic mod. I have mine waiting to go in. I can handle drilling through a replaceable fender but I don't think I could drill into the A pillar, I'd try to adhere it with double sided tape or something. A couple more comments: It looks like that pipe goes in all the way to the bottom of the elbow right? If that's the case it's restricting air flow since it takes up a certain amount of area but it dead heads at the end of the elbow. In that case I'd cut a big hole out of the side of it at the end where it hits the end of the elbow so the pipe can actually carry air. And the elbow going through the big 3.5" hole, it looks like it is rubbing against the edge of that hole and will chaffe. I'd put some protective edge material on it to protect it.

It's not easy to see in the video because it's a black pipe in a black elbow but the end of the 1.5" ABS pipe doesn't hit the corner of the elbow flush blocking off air flow. It touches the corner but air can still easily flow through if that makes sense because it's not meeting at a perfect 90 degree making a seal on the elbow. Cutting a side hole in the pipe would be extra insurance though and something to consider. As for the A-pillar, the way the snorkel is molded, it's takes a fair amount of force to push it over to the pillar to be affixed with rivets. Will double-sided tape hold strong enough? Maybe, but if you wheel your rig, a branch could hook the snorkel, ripping it away from the A-pillar and then that long lever hooked to the branch could cause you fender damage and/or the snorkel cracks. In response to the chaffing of the snorkel in the 3.5" hole, once the snorkel is securely affixed to the fender and the A-pillar, there should be zero movement. You need movement for chaffing to occur so I don't believe this is a valid concern. As long as the mounting nuts are tight holding the snorkel to the body, the snorkel will not move on the fender causing chaffing at the 3.5" hole. Thanks for this comment because I think others might have similar concerns.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
Well, if you do that, then you really need to put sealant on the air box cover because that's not water tight either. Hopefully during a water crossing you don't get stuck and are sitting still in deep water for a long time which would allow water to bubble up through those holes. If water gets in through the snorkel, like during a rain storm, sealing those holes means water can't drain out and you'll eventually swamp your air filter.

jeff guia I used to have a 79 4x4 pickup that was carbureted. I remember seeing a couple of people that got some sort of kit to seal up the carburetor, they then used a universal flexible air duct hose to connect the carb to the snorkel. From what I’ve seen, ARB makes one for your truck, if that doesn’t work out for you then I would check eBay. Worst case scenario you COULD always make a “custom” one using PVC pipe, I’ve seen them work with no issues but it just doesn’t look good in my opinion...
@PaulieWalnutss

I would definitely spend a little more and get a better quality kit there are to many fit and finish inconsistencies with this kit the topper was the 1.5 " pvc to prevent collapse of the hose bend
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
There's pluses and minuses to the kits that will work on these rigs. The more expensive ARB snorkel has more connections thus more chance for leaks. So, you make a valid point but stuffing a pipe into the elbow, or putting chicken wire in there like others have done to prevent it from collapsing wouldn't stop me from installing this snorkel. Anyway, to each his own I reckon. I think you're only choice is the ARB snorkel that sells for over $400. Anwar has been able to find the Hilux 167 snorkel for sale from one Ebay seller for $75. If you install the ARB snorkel, let us know how it goes for you.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Fabian, that roof rack isn't made by Thule. Only the wind deflector is made by Thule. The rack was custom made by a guy in Los Angeles. I bought it from a guy who had it made but then decided to go with a Rocky Mountain rack instead. The guy who built it basically mimicked the Gobi roof rack design. I paid the guy $750 for it. The guy who built it doesn't mass produce these. He just made it for this guy as a custom project.

Don't you think it would be smart to create a more watertight seal on the air box where the flap opens up to change your air filter for deep water crossings? Im going to do my snorkel in a few days here. Just wanted to hear your word on it
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
Some guys have done that but then you have to break that seal every time you change the air filter. Also, there's actually a drain on the bottom of that air box that lets moisture out. You would have to seal that as well. This sealing of the air box on the bottom has actually caused an issue with guys who have the snorkel intake facing forward. In a rain storm, water enters the snorkle pipe, travels into the air box and now has nowhere to drain out because the drain was sealed and it ends up swamping the air filter. The idea is to get through the crossing quickly and hopefully not have to sit idle in deep water for too long where water will eventually work it's way into things you don't want it to.
@marcuspalau8327
@marcuspalau8327 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Thank you for responding. This is very beneficial to me. I'm going to try to come up with a design where the drain hole has a screw on/screw off plug. Aside from that, I'm sure the 'crossings' would be quick and hopefully not stuck at idle, as you mentioned. I think sealing the air box would be ideal, but it's already pretty high up where the latch hangs, so I'm thinking of changing the drain hole at the bottom to a screw on screw off plug.
