Now I am going to say something politically incorrect. Hindi and urdu are not sister languages. They are not even twins. They are one and the same person with a split personality.

They are not dialects but 'sociolects'. This means they are used by different social groups. Urdu was the court language of the Mughals which evolved mainly in Delhi.

@@Gewaldro Oh, really? I didn't know that, but it makes perfect sense since Hindustani was the official language of the Mughal Empire alongside Persian and a Turkic language (I assume it was Uzbek or Chagatai what Mughal royalty spoke), and Urdu has plenty of Persian and some Turkic borrowings.
@Gewaldro

@@ElHeraldoHispano Yes, kind of. The founder of the Mughal empire Babur spoke Chagatai I think. It is the predecessor of both the Uzbek and Uyghur languages. For example the word 'prithvi' is a Sanskrit-based word. But nobody talks like that, especially among uneducated people. They just use the word 'zameen'.

It’s basically showing me what I already knew. They’re basically the same language but considered different for political reasons rather than actual reasons: like the Serbo-Croatian language, Bulgarian vs Macedonian, & Malay vs Indonesian. It’s basically Hindi with Persian, Arabic, & a few tribal Pakistani & Afghan loan words thrown in & written in Perso-Arabic script instead of Devanagari script

@@rayexception4590 i had a Hindi teacher in Germany who specialized in language research by using Bollywood films. He used to tell us those films use quite a lot of Urdu vocabulary. There some words here and there which Hindi speakers don't know. I remember asking a relative about the meaning of 'Dilshad Garden' which is the name of a metro station in Delhi. He didn't know the meaning. But my wife speaks Hindi too and watches Pakistani KZbinrs all day. Hence the differences can't be that big.

Well, it's important to notice also that the boundaries of a language and a dialect are not always clearly visible, as you've noticed, both Hindi and Urdu have pretty quite resemblance to each other, but in order to declare whether they're or not the same language politics and reloigion are also important factors.

@@amormir8280 How does Serbian have more Croatian in it? What does that even mean 💀
@amormir8280
@amormir8280 Жыл бұрын
@@Govnar658 Croatian and Serbian are practically close due to the same political standard for Yugoslav purposes, there is no doubt about that and of course understandable with approximately 10% different vocabulary in each. But also people usually speak with their local speeches so some time it gets tricky of understanding some words if people are not exposed to them, normal thing everywhere in the world. Bosnian is in the Croatian sphere of influence wile Montenegrin is in the Serbian sphere of influence because Croatia and Bosnia lay on the Croatian dialectal orbit of Croatian Čakavian, Croatian Kajkavian and Croatian West Štokavian dialects and their subdialects, wile Serbia and Monte Negro lay on Serbian dialectal orbit of Serbian East Štokavian and Serbian Torlakian dialects and speeches. Presence of words in common "Standard" is approximately 1/4 from Croatian Čakavian dialect and it's speeches, approximately 1/4 from Croatian Kajkavian dialect and it's speeches, approximately 1/4 from Croatian West Štokavian dialect and it's speeches and approximately 1/4 together from Serbian East Štokavian dialect and it's speeches and Serbian Torlakian dialect and it's speeches. An almost complete vocabulary of coastal terms, marine terms, marine and coastal animal/plant terms, occupations by the sea, coastal clothing, jobs/crafts related to the sea, navigational terms, ship terms, coastal and marine relief terms, etc. come exclusively from the Croatian Čakavian speeches, which you will not find similar words in any other Slavic languages and their dialects/speeches in the world. It is no secret that among them there are also Romance/Venetian terms that served as the basis for the literal translation into the Croatian Čakavian terms. In the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century, as new craft and industrial occupations appeared in the world, and we all know that the first new terms related to clothing, occupations, devices, tools, machines, techniques of growing food in an industrial way, scientific terms, etc. appeared in Western Europe due to the accelerated development of industry, those terms almost all firstly took the root in the Croatian Kajkavian speeches and further spread east to other South Slavic dialects/speeches from there, then various weather phenomena, time concepts (weeks, months), hierarchical ranks in the army, police and other administrative services, lordly titles, etc. It is no secret that among them there are also Germanic/German terms and Czech terms that served as the basis for the literal translation into the Croatian Kajkavian terms. For the Serbian East Štokavian speeches and Serbian Torlakian speeches, I do not need to emphasize that they have plenty Arabic and Persian terms that arrived with the Ottomans, while in the Croatian West Štokavian (Šćokavian/Šćakavian) speeches there is a little/quite a bit less Arabic and Persian terms, because they where and still today are in contact with the other two Croatian dialects so they developed their own Croatian synonyms, to note Bosnikas have more terms because of religious purposes/practice (islam). Also Croatian West Štokavian (Šćokavian/Šćakavian) dialect and it's speeches as well partially Croatian Čakavian dialect and it's speeches served as basis for the dictionary of Faust Vrančić and for the grammar dictionary of Bartol Kašić. 200 years later those dictionaries with other dictionaries and literary works from other Croatian literary writers mostly served to the Serbian poetry amateur Vuk Karadžić for standardisation tool and in process of that standardisation Serbian lost plenty of it's eastern vocabulary that was closer to Serbian East Štokavian dialect and it's speeches and Serbian Torlakian dialect and it's peeches. With all these facts, it is clear to any common sense person that the Serbian acquisition of the standard language as exclusively theirs falls into the water. But the mythomaniacal Panserbian politics cannot come to terms with this fact and they are looking for all possible ways of appropriate everything in these areas as their own, so the Internet community should be aware about who is constantly lighting the fire in the areas of the Dinarides (West Balkans). To give you a comparison of what kind of mythomaniacal Panserbian politics is, which of course some Serbs reject. It is similar to the internets language community well-known Panturanian Turkish policy (absurdly the root of that policy/ideology originated in Hungary) which characterizes all Turkic peoples and all peoples belonging to the so-called rejected Altaic language family as Turanian race (although I personally think that Transeurasian/Altaic family cannot be 100% completely rejected yet, since there is plenty of room for research). Although scientifically and linguistically rejected, serves as a means to achieve the goal for Panturanists; to get an idea of where Panserbian politics drew its mythomania from. So, it is similar like Panturanian ideology, but it is represented only in the narrow geographical area of the Dinarides, and it is also known to have been motivated by the aggressive policy of the Serbian Karađorđević (lit. Blackgeorgeson/Črnojurjević 😁) dynasty, which even today through European feudal family ties has a great influence on Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church (St. Sava ideological church). Well, if the more moderate Serbian Obrenović family had prevailed, it would be a different reality today 😉.

One thing I'd like to mention, in the Urdu version of the Lord's Prayer, you used the term Qarzdaaro/Qarz. That's wrong. I have never known the words Qarzdaaro & Qarz to mean anything other than loaners & loan respectively. If I'm not mistaken, the terms 'trespasses' & 'trespass' used in the original Lord's Prayer mean sin here. So, the correct translation would be 'gunhegaaro' (sinners) & 'gunhao' (sins - or 'gunha' for singular sin).

It’s as if Argentina and Mexico were to make their own versions of Spanish into standardize national languages. Take their local slang and regional mannerisms and codify them and standardize them and declare that each is a separate language while the rest of us in Latin America laugh at them. This is how I imagine Hindi and Urdu to be. To mutually intelligible variants of essentially the same language and both containing highly educated or highly influential speakers convinced that they are vastly different from one another while the common people look on and shake their heads and laugh to themselves at such foolishness. I have worked in finance and frequently need interpreters when dealing with certain people from North India and Pakistan. I cannot tell you the number of times I have been told by members of both groups of people when choosing the language from the telephone menu of our chosen service that if there are no Hindi interpreters, an Urdu one will do and vice versa because they are the “same thing.” And, indeed, it seems to be an interchangeable thing as far as these languages are concerned as I have never known either of these groups to have any trouble whatsoever using the interpreters of either one of these two variants of the language helping to make themselves understood.

One thing you get wrong is that no one in Pakistan or India pretends it is a different language. Everyone knows it is 90% similar. The matter of debate is which version came earlier. Everyone agrees they are variants but their origin is where things get tense. Both say their version came first and the other is a copy cat.

Urdu/Hindi is not native to Indian Subcontinent as many Hindu nationalists would disagree but this is the truth. Urdu/Hindi didn't exist before Muslims invaded Indian Subcontinent. Hindi has all the Persian and Arabic words that "Urdu" has, literally every single one, and it is far more natural and common to use the Persian vocabulary in Hindi than the vocabulary directly taken from ancient Sanskrit..... Every single Persian and Arabic word that exists in Urdu exists in Hindi because they are EXACTLY the same language.... The split between Hindi and Urdu is completely artificial..... Not only are Hindi and Urdu the same language, they are in fact the very same dialect of the same language! The artificial split between Hindi and Urdu was done intentionally and was for political reasons..... Throughout the Medieval and Early Modern Eras, Hindi naturally adopted thousands of loanwords from Persian (remember that nearly all the Arabic words in Hindi were words that Persian had already adopted....therefore the vast majority of Arabic loanwords in Hindi were adopyed via Persian), and so Hindi was absolutely inundated with Persian from c. 1350 - 1750 CE..... Whether you want to call this language, "Hindi", or "Urdu", is entirely up to you..... Modern Standard Hindi was developed as a political tool out of the bigotry and prejudice towards the Muslim Indian population by the Hindu nationalists..... It is an artificial rendering of the Hindustani language that artificially and mechanically replaces the Persian words, which naturally came into the language over the centuries, with words taken directly from Classical Sanskrit..... The problem with this is that Hindi/Urdu naturally descend from Classical Sanskrit, but they are not still Classical Sanskrit..... Many, many centuries, roughly 2,500 years have passed since ancient Sanskrit was the natural form of the everyday spoken language..... Over this great stretch of time, Sanskrit gave birth to many descendant languages and dialects, all across the Indian subcontinent, which at first were what linguists call Prakrits..... Even as far back as the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in ancient India c. 250 BCE, Sanskrit was no longer the everday, spoken language because it has already given birth to many different languages and dialects, or Prakrits, which are Middle Indo-Aryan languages.... Sanskrit is an Old Indo-Aryan language... So if languages spoken throughout the Indian subcontinent during the time of Ashoka c. 250 BCE (that's 250 years before Christ!) were already Middle Indo-Aryan, and not Old Indo-Aryan, then that tells you just how old Sanskrit is...... So, if we fast forward nearly 1,500 years after the death of Ashoka, then we finally have the very earliest form of what could be considered Hindi, i.e., by about 1250 CE..... So the language spoken naturally by the villagers along the Ganges and Jumna rivers in North India had morphed and changed naturally for 1500 years since, not Old Indo-Aryan ancient Sanskrit, but since Middle Indo-Aryan ancient Prakrits!!! If there is ANY difference between Hindi and Urdu it is for two reasons: 1. Urdu is the exact same dialect as standard Hindi, i.e. the form of Hindi that was spoken in and around Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi), the capital of Hindustan during the Late Mughal Period, but Urdu was the form of that same Delhi Hindi that was used by the poets and writers who chose to write in the Perso-Arabic script and to use especially poetic, flowerly and overtly Persianized language, to imitate the Literary Persian poetry that was the absolute standard of education for not just Muslims, but for Hindus and everyone during that time period, because Persian was the lingua franca par excellence everywhere east of Bosnia and west of China from c. 1450 - 1800 CE..... So literary Urdu developed as a slightly more overtly Persianized form of the already highly Persianized Hindi of the time..... 2. The artificial divide between Hindi and Urdu for political reasons that has forced the two registers of the same dialect into two different trajectories..... Going back to the Mughal Period, the everyday, illiterate Hindu villager doing pooja to Ganapati in a village outside of Delhi in the year 1600 would have used dozens and dozens of Persian words every single day, just naturally as part of their everday speech...... However, don't forget that the majority of financiers and accountants and scribes and merchants writing things down, making lists, takimg account of goods, etc throughout the Mughal Empire of Hindustan, were Hindus, who were educated in Persiam, because Persian was almost what English is today, except they didn't have the internet.... The Mughal Empire was not some foreign state of Muslim foreigners (except for at the very nascent stages of the Mughal Dynasty), and they had almost zero connection to the Arabs and the Arabic language, other than the fact that they were Sunni Muslims, who read the Quran in Classical Arabic and used Classical Arabic as a religious language for theological writings and also for the study of Islamic religious law (fiqh)...... The Mughals were of Turko-Mongol ancestry, but mostly Turkic ancestry..... To be precise, the early Mughals spoke the Chaghatai Turki language, because the founder of the Mughal Dynasty, Zahir ud-Din Muhammad Babur (1483-1530), was a Timurid Prince from the region of Ferghana, located in what is now the far southeastern corner of Uzbekistan, where Chaghatay Turki was spoken... But Persian was the lingua franca there, as well and was the language used by the Turko-Mongol peoples of Central Asia, most notably the Timurid Dynasty....... So for everyone Persian was the lingua franca par excellence, just about everywhere in the Eastern Islamic World at this time, including the Iranian Plateau, Central Asia and South Asia.... Actually, even in the Western Islamic World, because the Ottoman Turks also used Literary Persian as their court language and the language of poetry and literature...... It is also important to note that the period of Islamic rule in the Indian subcontinent did not begin with the invasion of Hindustan by the Mughals..... Babur and the Mughals did not come to Hindustan until roughly 300 years after the beginning of Islamic rule in India.....! So for several centuries, Hindi, which was called Hindavi at the time, naturally adopted thousands of words from Persian.....
