In Christianity, Jesus must have absolutely existed and the Resurrection must have absolutely occurred for the entire savior mythology to hold true. This is the case where a dogmatic and exclusivist truth claim must rely purely on its historicity as foundational without which it could be just one of many paths subject to personal interpretation just like the ithasa of Hinduism. Hinduism doesn't make such dogmatic and exclusivist truth claims which gives it enormous power in teaching spiritual lessons. The complete lack of obsession among Hindus about the historicity of the ithasa is baffling to the Abrahamic mind which cannot fathom that the truth is in and around us everywhere. We are living some form of it since we are part of this physical reality with a conscious mind. I see no better approach than this for the upliftment of humanity.

The timing of this video could not be better.. I had just seen a video by Farhan Qureshi about Ganesha's story, how Shiva chopped his head off and then brought him back to life, with its yogic meaning - and had begun to understand that sometimes, we are so carried away by the narratives that we don't focus on the principle, the moral of the story and its yogic meaning. This video elaborates on that. Also, I completely agree how we embellish the central stories according to our bhava - and that's the reason the Vedantis are able to interpret Krishna in dwaita, advaita and in vishistadvaita.. It seems that my way of understanding god is very similar to yours, surprisingly so. I don’t have your stories to learn from ( much different culture) but I have had many personal experiences, hardships, doubts, life lessons, to learn from. I’ve spent a lot of time in introspection and prayer to overcome or just even to understand those life lessons and through this to have the truth revealed in my heart, to be changed in my very nature. That was a very beautiful way of describing the inward journey of finding god and how we are changed by the experience. My idea of god isn’t an anthropomorphic man in the sky, though I do think there may be other beings/ angels of so many faiths, that do serve that same divine spirit who in ancient mythologies may have been thought of as gods. God is a very personal experience, a relationship, for me god is like a fire that consumes my heart. All relationships with the divine will be experienced differently as we are each one of us very different from one another. Like children with their parents. A mother can have two different children and love them both, she is the same but her children being different from one another will perceive their relationship with their mother differently.

I am a Hindu, very much at heart mind and soul. But still, pretty much most of Hinduism is myth, *except* the Vedas, particularly the Upanishads. That is why they are called Shruthi, or "that which was heard." (by sages, the Rishis) In contrast all else is Smrithi, or that which was remembered. That said, Joseph Campbell, the master at interpreting myth, taught us that myth is not idle tall story. They are stories embedded with spiritual truths. Like the one about Ganesha circling his parents as you presented. Myth is powerful, very powerful. Myths evoke our spiritual natures. Deities revealed in myths become absolutely real, and give the power of support, healing and guidance. Or objects, too. I have a small black egg shaped stone called a Shaalagraama (written as shalagrama) which is said to embody the power of Lord Vishnu. I love to hold in my cupped hands at times and meditate on it. So is there a blue God up on the sky called Vishnu? To me, rather, it is like this: when I think of the image of Vishnu, I then expand it to encompass the whole Universe. Same with the image of Lord Shiva. But I equate Vishnu or Shiva with the consciousness of the universe, and their female counterparts, the Goddesses, with the energy and matter of the universe. Shiva is mind, and Shakthi, energy. I love the stories of the Ramaayana and Mahaabhaaratha but not for a moment do I believe they are historical! But I know they are stories with profound spiritual impact on a billion people, me included. But all said, I was uneasy with all this for years, but am finally home, and feel so relaxed and comfortable with Hindu practice, belief, devotion, and above all, the practice of Dhyaana or meditation, and the concept of Samaadhi.

Rama was an incarnation of lord Vishnu. therefore proving that our gods are real. we still have 3rd largest followers of dharma without practicing any missionary work.
