Equating Christine with SADE was well done. Very serendipitous.

The outro of Crystal is what first got me to appreciate John McVie's bass playing, since then his bass lines have been some of my favourite parts of songs...

Syed…I’ve heard you remark several times, mainly since listening to FM, that it’s kind of an eye-opener to you how good “pop” can be. And I get that. So much of it can be Crap. But if you get in to…..for instance….the solo work of Sting, or Peter Gabriel, or Paul Simon, or Phil Collins, or Steve Winwood, or Don Henley…..all played on commercial radio…there’s allot of great songwriting there.

When they were recording this album, Christine was the veteran and star of the band, so she got 4 songs on the album. This album then made Buckingham and Nicks the stars of the band and she was relegated to the background for the rest of their career. Until she passed away, hardly anyone had reacted to her music. Good to see the current recognition.

Christine still averaged 4 plus songs on all the rest of the 1975-87 albums - writing and singing more leads and co-leads than Stevie and fewer than Lindsey. Stevie's songs tended to be longer so she got fewer songs (albums on vinyl had space considerations before quality degraded). For all that Stevie for many became the face of the band she wrote and sang just about 25% of their songs between 75-87.

You weren’t paying attention if you thought she had been relegated to the background. She still got her songs on every album, wrote two monster hits off “Rumours, had a hit song of each of the next two albums, two hits off “Tango in the Night.”

@@cliffsmelley5026 Sorry, my point was that she was not longer the face of the band and if you questioned the general public about them, they could name Stevie, maybe Lindsey, and probably not Christine. I was not knocking her contributions. Christine was always my favorite, even from before Stevie and Lindsey joined.

Yeah no, Christine was NOT the star of the band ... and she was just 1 of the veterans of it. However, that doesn't diminish my absolute and total love of and for her though ... not in any way. The stars were always Peter Greene, Bob Welsh, Jeremy Spencer and even Mick Fleetwood. Christine was usually in the background and didn't really produce a lot of songs before Buckingham-Nicks came along, at least not any famous ones, but she sure did shine after they arrived. She was, however, featured on the song Sentimental Lady, both with Fleetwood Mac (Bare Trees album, 1972) and with Bob Welch after he went solo (French Kiss album, 1977).

" hardly anyone had reacted to her music" McVie wrote more of their hits than anyone else. She had 4.2 out of the 11 songs on Rumours and on their "Greatest Hits" 8 of the 16 tracks were hers. Was she not as recognized as she should have been? Absolutely. But she was never "background".

Before Linsey and Stevie joined Fleetwood Mac, they recorded an album called Buckingham Nicks. Crystal is from that album. It's a great album - young Stevie and Linsey. 1973, their only album they recorded together. I think you might really enjoy it.

I haven't heard Crystal in a long time and WOW ! So beautiful. I've never heard Lindsey sound so vulnerable. Stevie is my favorite harmony singer (check out Insider by Nicks and Tom Petty) and Chris's keys at the end. Hope all is well. Cheers !

I liked your insight into the contrast between Christine's and Stevie's voices with one conveying strength and the other vulnerability. You're doing justice to this iconic album and band. If you want to hear another equally beautiful love song the first that comes to mind is "Tupelo Honey" by Van Morrison.

Mick is using this nice little shuffle beat with intermittent accents that just give it this really cool groove the John McVies bass line. It's one of the main hooks this song has. That and the chorus "Your Mood is like a Circus Wheel" really gets people to bite.

You are fun to listen with. 1975 I was 10 years old, Rumours came out in junior high, then senior year Mirage hit the charts. Super talented people that I grew up listening to. Soulful and elegant music. I loved that band, I think all of us did. Lindsay is legend along with the original rythem section that are the bands name sake. But here you also had two women making solid marks on rock n roll history. Love the Mac, historic, legend at this point, and excellent timeless music.

i am glad you are spending so much time reviewing this album. I have always thought it was superior to the mega selling Rumours album, which is also great of course. What I love so much about this album are the mellow songs, Crystal here, but also Warm Ways and Landslide. The rest of the album is also just superb. It's one of my favorite albums of all time. I'm glad you are enjoying it. I have loved it for the past 45 years.

Christine was the backbone of the band, and she had as many or more hits as the others combined. In Rick Beato's tribute to her after the untimely passing, he referred to her as "the queen of hooks" as in musical "hooks" that catch the ear of the listener. The live version from The Dance is very good: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKHReIekqtV1jpI (Fleetwood Mac- Over My Head (The Dance)) And I know it is not on this album but her song "As long as you follow" is a masterpiece of that incredible "Queen of Hooks" talent: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iICqdnunZryNp7c (Fleetwood Mac - As Long As You Follow (Official Music Video)) Her opening phrase after the soothing intro is a classic Christine "hook"... RIP Christine!

That little guitar thing is called "harmonics", where the player barely touches the string. The result is a sound that's one octave higher, and just sounds incredible. And this is as good as I've ever heard it done.

Haven't listened to Crystal in a long time. Thanks for bringing it back to me, as it was always my favorite FM song, but it's seldom played on the radio. Its pure magic. Lindsey Buckingham's guitar work is amazing, and as I recall, he's pretty unorthodoxed in his technique, using a lot of finger picking, almost banjo style.

In 1976 this track won me over to FM and they’ve been my fav to this day. Regarding the guitar technique on Crystal, since Lindsey rarely uses a pick he can easily switch from picking to strumming and using a barre chord to slide between chords smoothly. Or... he’s obviously proficient enough to quickly change open chords! The long fade-out with the synth improv was a great moment for Christine as well. I agree with a previous comment that Stevie’s solo version is definitive so there are three recorded versions of Crystal out there.

Songs like these were the "bread and butter" of pop music from say early 60's into the 70's. They were sophisticated songs written by people who were, or aspired to be, real musicians creating their own work as best they could. They actually wrote their own material. Now there seems to be teams of writers for every song and no singularity of talent - its a committee. Driven by the record companies and their hand-picked producers. IMO.

Syed, the guitar style of Lindsey Buckingham is all finger picking. He uses his thumb and forefinger as a pick for rhythm. When you get around to watching live performances you can see his technique. It's always blown me away. To the best of my knowledge he does not use guitar picks much, if at all.

As you say, so well produced, musically detailed and played together with love, so that every member could contribute their own advantages. If you bought a stereo system in the 70s, the seller played most Dark Side Of The Moon, but he could have take this album or Rumours. Lindsey can be a devil (I'm Afraid, Not That Fun ... ) or a poet (Crystal/had forgotten this gem/hear FM/mostly live/not found it in a concert, Never Gonna Back Again, Big Love/version The Dance live ...) on guitar and in voice. It's so shit to discuss Christine or Stevie or Lindsey, all 5 are indivual so great artists and the chemistry between them brought them the success and us these highlights, also in the later constellations u.a. McVie+Buckingham 2017. Over My Head: on the Live album 1980 the electric guitar is more foreground, better recognizable and on The Dance live 1997 Lindsey played a fantastic acoustic guitar. He is so versatile and always finds the right balance to give the song the right character and mood. SADE is jazz oriented and stays overcool in its flow; but in uptempo songs; bluesy and west coast breathed Christine (had enough humidity and fog in her childhood) shows another side, wait only a few hours. I'm looking forward to it and to your comments.👍😉✌

Great tune. I first heard back around the time the album was released though by listening to my older brother’s mixed tape recordings.I loved it instantly. You mean Sade sounded like Christine! They we’re not the first band showing how pop music can be instrumentally strong. Go back to Dionne Warwick’s songs or the Beatles later on or even Glen Campbell on Wichita Lineman with the Wrecking Crew who were on another level of musicianship. You have much to learn my young Jedi!😀Crystsl was not a o pulse tune and never played on the radio.Rhiannon was the huge hit tune and why Stevie and Lindsay came to the forefront. I love Christine’s songs .

9:00 Lindsay Buckingham doesn't use a pick. He always plays with his fingers. That's why he's able o merge fingerpicking and strumming so effectively. Plus, he's a virtuoso. When he sadly left the band, they needed to hire 2 guitar players (and good ones) because it's extremely difficult to play like he does.

The reason Nicks was not allowed to sing on the first album she was in the band for was the group did nor want Christie to get angry and leave, she was actually the glue of the band and wrote a lot of the songs. Then they loosened up and felt everything was OK. Christie had to meet and give her approval for Nicks to join the band.

Lindsey's guitar sound is so unique because he doesn't use a pick -- all of the picking is done entirely with his fingers. He taught himself to play guitar by imitating the banjo lines on old Kingston Trio records. He is one of the most underrated guitarists and producers in the business. And no, they don't make pop music like this anymore.
