The best way I could describe this song: About 8 years or so ago I saw a story on a right-wing american news show, where they reported on a meme which said "$350million spent on Obamacare, US population is 317million. Just give every American a million dollars instead." And nobody, from the meme creators, to the people who made it popular, to the execs, to the news anchors, to probably many of the viewers thought to themselves: "Wait. That math doesn't work out like that. It would be $1" As soon as I saw it, this song played in my head. The relationship between America, its media landscape, its politics, and the trained ignorance / stupidity that holds it all together. Shout out to my American brothers, sisters, and siblings who are resisting the tide.

I tip my hat to Greenday... when they hit the world with the album "Dookie" which had several big hits, they were criticized for being kind of.punk for disaffected suburban teens, Then at the height of their popularity, they hit us with the ultimate political rant. I think you'll like many of their hits... "Longview," "Welcome to Paradisie," "Basket Case," "When I Come Around," "Good Riddance," "21 Guns," "Oh Love," "Minority," Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Holiday," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." There are others, but that's just off the top of my head. While you're enjoying your deep dive into Greenday, you might want to check out the band Rancid, another popular punk band that was kind of a contemporary of Green Day. Among their better known songs were "Ruby Soho," "Roots Radicals," "Salvation."

Love Green Day. Story time. When one of my Nieces turned 16 I bought her and I tickets to go see them in Maryland, where I was living, however after purchasing I found out our family trip to Cape May was the same week as the show. So we're at the beach, day before the show, I hand her the card, she sees what it is and starts crying. Then I said look when it is. She said that's tomorrow, how are we going to do that? We left the beach the next morning and drove 300 miles back to where the show was. Went to Dave and Busters, ten to the show. Afterwards went to my apt. Sleep like 5 hours. Got back in the car and drove 300 miles back to the beach. Back by 10 am. As I was pulling into the parking at our condo the cops stopped me because I was doing 30 in a 25.ticketed,laughed so much. Totally worth it. The show was awesome!!!

American Idiot was Green Day's "reboot" as a band. Prior to this, they got lost in the shuffle, despite being one of the 90's biggest bands. They had multiple flops and were considered outdated by the music scene. While recording the album, the original masters for the songs were stolen when they were pretty much done. They didn't let this stop them and ended up re-writing and re-recording the entire album. It became one of the greatest punk albums of all time. As far as their politics, American Idiot was a direct message to Bush, the Iraq war, and the state of society after 9/11. The band are from the Bay area in Northern California, which is probably the most left-wing place in the entire USA. For them to be this open about their views when the country was conservative and republican during it's most nationalist era, was bold and respected by many. Green Day were always considered not "punk" enough, so this song and album was a big F you to the haters.

I would say that this piece, like so much of their music isn’t political but definitely reflective of the cultural turmoil at the time. It came out Sept 2004, 3 years after Sept 11 and we (like the UK) were involved in a very unpopular and controversial war. Technology was changing the culture too. That’s what Green Day was responding to.

Yeah, that's the definition of political.

I mentioned on your first Green Day reaction that American Idiot is the Broadway (New York City)smash hit in the mid 2000s. Billy Joe Armstrong (lead singer, lead guitarist, & songwriter) took the songs from this album and wrote a storyline for it and put it all together into a Musical that was good enough to make it to Broadway. It ran a full yea. I got to see one my students on stage singing & acting the main character at the San Jose Montgomery Theater! It was absolutely amazing!

And now, today, they are the mainstream mockingbird media's TDS champions. Every word of this song describes themselves 🤷🏻

The Decline by NOFX is the apex of 90s punk. Itll get a ton of views. Old punkers love watching it blow peoples minds.

Very political group - they change the word of American Idiot to an "anti-orange guy" song:)

You don't have to be particularly political to dislike Donny.

I was a fan of green greenday till I found out that they're woke lefties. Oh, I don't care if greenday fans come at me.😊😂

Woke doesn't mean what you think it does. It was a warning to young black men to be aware of their surroundings in Sundown towns. So what the f are you talking about?

American Idiot is my favorite album, period. It's about as perfect as any album could be. I enjoyed your reaction and after twenty years of listening to this song, I think I still react the same way. The enjoyment has not diminished. The digger you deep, the more hidden gems you find.

IMHO this was the best album of the 2000s! Every song is incredible including Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Dude, f*cking delighted you've found Green Day. They're probably my favourite band. Yes their music does change a bit over the years, and yes they have some much slower softer ballads too, but there's always a certain 'sound' they have. Basket Case is 30 years old, and American Idiot is 20 years old, the band did a massivetour this year where they played both Dookie (1994) and American Idiot (2004) in FULL alongside other hits. Some other songs for you to check out: Welcome to Paradise, Brain Stew/Jaded (have to be done back to back), Holiday, Minority (probably one of my faves of theirs), St Jimmy, Jesus of Suburbia, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Boulivard of Broken Dreams. You will get LOTS of massive Green Day fans urging you to do Jesus of Suburbia next, please, please, listen to a few moth other songs first. Not because Jesus isn't great - its incredible - but because you'll appreciate it a bit more with more of a feel for them.

Warching your reactions makes me feel like i took all this great music for granted. But i didnt coz i showed up and rocked out to every tune. I rock it again along with you. But i think it was just so normal for us back then that to see you now experiencing it for the first time from a different place in history just highlights how amazing it was to be alive and surrounded by all this back then. ♥️

Tre Cool is a massively underrated drummer, exceptionally talented man. Plus his name is Tre Cool. The defence rests.
