totally agree - I was fortunate to live in Thousand Oaks CA for most of my life and Stewart lived there for years (may still be there). He was so cool that he helped local high schools out by mentoring percussionists/drummers. My daughter was one of them! Also, I was always amazed that even on "slow tunes" he could fit in so many drum beats for each note. I don't know how to explain but he is a savant!

Sting is absolutely in the top tier of song writers, both in music & lyrics. His solo work is impeccable. And your instinct on ska/reggae is correct, at the time when they popped, punk was on its way to morphing from 3 chord, cacophonies of noise, into what you just listened to. The Police were never really accepted in the hard core London punk scene. Sting was trained in a Spanish guitar, as well as being a teacher. The amazing fact is they broke up while at the very top of the music world. Synchronicity their final album was everywhere.

The Police only lasted a few years, and by the early '80's they broke up over creative differences, and Sting's desire to do more experimental/jazz. He has had a long and illustrious solo career since then and is still very active. Every song The Police did is great, and damn near everything Sting has done as a solo artist as well. Sting hails from Newcastle, and his real name is Gordon Sumner. He got his nickname from the yellow and black shirts (rugby or soccer, not sure) that bore the school colors when he was teaching. The drummer, Stewart Copeland, is American, and the guitarist, Andy Summers, is also British. They have been involved in many projects as well and remain highly respected.

That interview on Drumeo is hilarious! I love the way Stewart constantly calls Sting “Stingo”(like Ringo) 😂 He probably knows it winds Sting up when he does it. Love Stewart. One of my three favourite drummers of all time. Maybe check out “Don’t Care” by Klark Kent too, MollyBoy! It’s Stewart Copeland solo. Released just as The Police started. And Stewart played everything on the track. But it got in the charts so was asked to be on Top of the Pops…problem was, they couldn’t usurp The Police, and Stewart wanted to perform on TotP with a band rather than on his own. So he had Sting and Andy mime along with him but they all wore masks so no-one could tell who they really were 😂

Love me some Police, and Sting. Great tunes! I think you’re correct about referencing Ska and Reggae influences. But I’m no expert; just a music lover. Thanks for posting today; we’re having some bad days in USA now. Very sad and scary!😮😎
