I think it's important to know what the song is about. However, I hate this video it forces one person's interpretation upon you. (as another commenter pointed out.) Once you get it, then you can listen to it with no lyrics. But without the meaning, it's not going to hit you so hard.

Listening to Tool through their career can seriously be a life-changing experience. The albums Aenima and Lateralus, especially, need to be listened to from start to finish with good headphones in a dark room. The layering and lows and peaks of the vocals are totally intentional - sometimes he sings almost like it is meant to be subliminal and not completely heard. Tool is on another level, period. It's a cerebral, emotional, spiritual, and primal experience. I also think reading all that garbage while the song is playing is totally distracting and detracting from he music that should be sweeping you away. It was a disservice to use that as the first listen - but no way you could have known that. People should listen to the music before you try to dive into all this analysis. It doesn't work as a reading assignment, it needs to be felt.

JAGodard I might voice a disagreement. It is useful to have that kind of information injected into a video for those who will not take the effort to look things up for themselves afterwards. Many people will express confusion, and then write off the experience as an unmemorable one, possibly leading to never really discovering the skill of the artists. That would be unfortunate, and if this causes some people to take a second listen, then it has accomplished its goal. And ultimately, to merely listen, one need only close their eyes.

I wouldn’t react to any tool music videos for someone just getting into tool, they take too much away from the music. Lyric videos are the way to go. With that said, Vicarious and Schism are great songs to do. If you suggest Parabola, it has to be paired with Parabol just preceding it

That's what i said. It's not his fault, it's the idiot that made the video. I'm a big tool fan but i hate tool fans lol. They act like if you don't dissect every little lyric you are a dumbshit. It's like they miss the musical part of tool. Maynard is an intelligent and unique dude but he is no more unique tgan the next guy that is unique. Yet tool fans think just because they listen to tool they are the most intelligent beings on the planet. I absolutely love tool but most of their songs are pretty straight forward with their meanings and i don't feel like i have to dissect every little bit of them. I just realized i completely went off topic lol.

While your comment was a bit pretentious, I do agree that he focus too much on the video (especially when it's made by a 3rd person) and the lyrics when reacting to SONGS. For me, when I listen to a song for the first time, they could just as well be reading random words from a dictionary. I treat the singing mostly like an instrument. What I would have like to hear him react to more, was the musical parts, and the rhythm. The song is mostly in 4/4, though, so it's not really complex. But it does have some sections of 7/8 in between.

My man, you have hit the realm of Maynard James Keenan, the legend. He's also the vocalist for A Perfect Circle and puscifer. Every song of Maynard has meaning. Tool is the metaphysical, APC the emotional, and puscifer the experimental. The more you check out, the more you'll fall in love with his music. Orestes, 3 libras are good starters for APC and for Puscifer; remedy and horizons, are a good place to start your journey into them. And with tool, literally anything. Love the channel man.

I know I'm late to the party here but, there are 2 aspects of this song that are hard to take in at the same time, one is the one you focused on, the deep conceptual meaning; the other is the amazing musical aspects. Give it another listen without thinking so hard and just take in the music, which is as complex, interesting and badass as the lyrics.

@@AlexHefner Here's what I believe he is referring to as his shadow.. or mans shadow: The "Shadow" is understanding man's capacity for evil. Once humanity as a whole can understand its own capacity for evil.. then we can deal with it as a species and evolve into a fully conscious state of awareness which facilitates an eternal love and compassion for all life. In other words.. You can only comprehend true light when you are completely surrounded by darkness. 44 - 2 is a broken state of consciousness which is allowing the suppression of our minds eye and a collective ignorance which is very useful for those who control our society from the "Shadows" It's time for us to evolve and become 46 - 2 ! It's not a generational evolution.. It's just a heightened state of awareness which is fully accessible to all, once we let go of everything we think we know and start asking the right questions. Allowing us to shed our social programming and start to see the illusions of the world we think we live in. No longer dualistic in nature' we may find peace with ourselves and all living things.

@Tim Hutchinson, admit it, you too cringed when #Alex mispronounced Dr. {YUNG's} name, right? 😉 I too prefer the teachings of Dr. Jung to Dr. Freud, albeit they both were great contributors to the Field. I'm also a tad concerned that #Alex is marrying a nurse & gets squeamish about things like "picking scabs"??? Okay, I'm just being bitchy now! Peace!
@sugoruyo
@sugoruyo 5 жыл бұрын
To answer your question directly: in Jungian (pronounced YOO-ng-ian) psychology, the shadow is that part of our personality that we are not consciously aware of. It's "in the shadows", subconsciously and unconsciously being expressed throughout our lives. Because we're generally oblivious of our faults (meaning they're mostly part of the shadow) it tends to have negative effects on our lives. The song is a metaphor for growing beyond that. The whole idea of getting two more chromosomes has no scientific grounding and is mostly pushed by New Age bullshit artists. The main character of the song is talking about introspection and identifying those dark parts and "shedding skin", like a snake does as it grows. The singer and band have this "anxious" sound by using certain musical tricks and tone of voice. It's like he's on the verge of a transformative experience, he's glimpsed the other side and he's really anxious to get there. But, the closer he gets the greater the resistance so he has to keep increasing his efforts to get there. It evokes imagery of crustaceans outgrowing their exoskeleton and feeling very constricted in there, being just about ready to crack open the shell from the inside and free themselves. He wants to get out, step through the shadow and leave it behind and enjoy the possibilities of the new self that comes out of that process. He never gets there by the end of the song though. And I think that's part of the intended message, the growth and perfection of oneself is not something that ends. You don't cross a threshold and that's it, it's an unreachable goal that is nevertheless worth pursuing. Tool is really a band whose songs you should listen to with the lyrics in front of you a few times before even attempting to decipher the songs.

Do yourself a favor and never watch anything for the person who uploaded that video again. All the additional text in between the lyrics is just their perspective and essentially doesn't pertain to the actual meaning of this song. Because of this video you missed some of the best parts due to the text which completely ruined your overall experience. Tool music contains so much detail that one needs to let go and embrace the moment The lyrical content is meant to be deciphered at a later date once you have devoured their atmosphere of sounds. The music in this song progresses from a basic primal instrumental piece through evolutional progressions which place you to our current evolution and beyond to what we may become following the 46 and 2 evolutional theory. So in this song, the lyrics talk to one of the most basic parts of our being evolving while the music animates it. This truly goes deep if you want to get the full meaning of this masterpiece.
