A rabbit hole full of fibonacci sequences, junk dna & harmonic melodic r-evolutions. Drink & Eat Alice. You're in Tool's Wonderland now. The fact that the drummer can even play the insane fibonacci rythmns (& create the vocals on top of that!) is so next level it's mind-boggling. There a great KZbin video that dissects the song in comparison to the Fibonacci sequence & only then did their mastery over all of their instruments become so apparently. You literally hear their genius growing, expanding, pulsing + throbbing, sweating + bleeding all the way thru thier song Lateralus - from beginning to end. It's 6minutes of symphonic harmony 🤩 The previous commentor said it best; "you don't analyze Tool. Tool analyzes you!"👍

Carl Jung. The Lyricist was interested in Jungian psychology at the time. The shadow represents the unconscious parts of ones personality that people bury because they are associated with darker negative emotions. Those negative emotions unconsciously hold us back and lead us to hurt ourselves and those we love. The purpose of the 'transformation' is to purge ourselves of those feelings and become better people. It's a repeated theme on the album as a whole. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, totaling 46, 23 from the mother and 23 from the father. So with that genetic component the idea could be to evolve past our propensity to engage in war and believe in hate. Loved the video, great analysis, you got a new fan :)

This evolution is based off of his journey through his shadow (the side of your conscious self, existing in your subconscious that you don't want to accept) according to Jungian psychology. There are 4 stages of interaction with one's Shadow. I could go deeper into it but wikipedia has a great entry on all of it. These two guys got it from the lyrics though, it definitely creates an interest to learn the specifics of the lyrics more for me. Very interesting.
@AdamSmith-tm5ri7 жыл бұрын
I like the interpretation, forty six and 2 is about the next step in evolution we currently have 46 chromosomes in two sex chromosomes. Primitive people only had 44 chromosomes and two sex chromosomes so it's basically talking about the next step in human evolution. The shadow is a part of Jungian theory. The shadow is the unconscious part of the human mind. I just stumbled across this channel because I saw tool and plan on binge watching the rest of your videos I like the reaction video and can appreciate the lyric breakdown good stuff guys

@davidpennington90887 жыл бұрын
Just adding to comment above. The shadow self is your ego, the part of yourself that isn't you but is a piece of armor made by us in order to survive in society. In order for us to have not only a physical evolution but also a spiritual one you have to accept and love even the parts of yourself that you hate (picking his scabs). 46&2 is also referring to chromosomes in the human body. Much more that could be added but you get the idea. Subbed btw

Chase Rankin Yeah, I get where you're coming from. I just assumed it would be common knowledge, as you said, but if it isn't it really should be. I mean, we as humans, commit to memory some of the dumbest things. Like who Kim K fucked in that video forever ago, or who Brad Pitt is married to, but we tend to lose the knowledge that can actually mean the most. Not to be insensitive or anything, because I also know several utterly useless facts, but i just wish as a whole humans cared about more important things. And now im done getting deep on ya, lol.

Lateralus is their best song by far. The time signatures of the chorus switch from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8 (the song was originally titled 987) which happens to be the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. The syllables from which Maynard sings the chorus are also corresponding to the Fibonacci sequence; black (1) then (1) white are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy (5) red and yellow then came to be (8) reaching out to me, (5) let's me see (3) One of the greatest pieces of music composed in our modern era :) Loudwire lists it as the number 1 best metal song of the 21st century. Since yours is the best explanation of the title, I'll just quote wikipedia for the the Shadow: In Jungian psychology, the "shadow", "Id", or "shadow aspect/archetype" may refer to (1) an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself, or (2) the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious. In short, the shadow is the "dark side".

Man I love subbing to this channel. You guys nailed this reaction! Like others said, 46 & 2 refers to our chromosome count--in our current evolution, humans have 44 & 2 chromosomes (the & 2 refers to the X and Y chromosomes). It was amazing watching you guys figure out what a song as complex and esoteric as Tool is about. Now for my requests, I wanna see some Ronnie James Dio reaction. Maybe Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell, or Dio - Egypt [The Chains Are On]. It's about cocaine!

@evanwilliamson58007 жыл бұрын
Ron Balch that's what's great about Maynard because the way he words things could be taken in different ways like different observer interpretations, it means different things to different people like this song 46 and 2 is talking about chromosomes but if you were 46 and 2 you would have down syndrome but they are the most awesome people! I saw a race where people with down syndrome were running and one of them fell but the other people in the race stopped and picked him up and they all crossed the finish line together, they all win! Imagine if everyone thought that way! We would live in a lovely peaceful world for sure. Picking his scabs is talking about remembering things he might have done bad in his life or ways he was treated that made him sad or feel bad and he's feeling upset about it. The shadow is kind of like the ego that's making him remember things that upset him and he's stepping through it, he's releasing those feelings so he can move forward in his own personal evolution. He's shedding skin like a reptilian and becoming new. He's digging through his muscles for a clue of what he needs to release in order to move forward in his evolution, you have to release what's bad in order to make room for more good. Crawling on his belly feeling emotionally upset and clearing out old thoughts and regrets of what could have happened or what could have been. He's been wallowing in his own confused and insecure delusions to find something that would help him remember things he may have forgotten or hiding to help guide or cross him through the shadow. He wants to feel the goodness coming in when he releases everything from his shadow aspect. Change is coming through his shadow because he's doing the work to release it. The shadow is a unconscious complex that is defined as repressed and surpressed aspects of the conscious self. There are constructive and destuctive types of the shadow. Carl jung said it is important to be aware of shadow material and incorporating it into conscious awareness, lest one project these attributes onto others. humans deal with the reality of the shadow aspect in 4 ways: denial, projection, integration and or transmutation. There are 3 diffent kinds of humans, meaning they perceive the one reality in 3 different ways interpreted differently, 1st kind has a composition of 42 and 2, they comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves, to them there is only one energy one life one beingness that moves everywhere anything happening anywhere is also within them like cells in a body, they are connected to a single consciousness that moves through everything, these are the aborigines is Australia and might be a few African tribes as well, the second is 44 and 2 chromosomes and it is in disharmony and is used as a stepping stone from the 42 and 2 to get to the next level of 46 and 2 and the 2 additional chromosomes changes everything. He's saying join in my child the child aspect in him, something must have happened to him when he was a child now his shadow is moving close to meaning, he's remembering that something happened to him in his childhood. Change is coming through now and now it is his time to listen to his muscle memory and contimplate what he has been holding on to, like is this worth keeping in my experience or not. He chooses to live and grow to take and give, experiencing life lessons ect... what ever it takes just to step through it all. See his shadow changing stretching up and over him, he's getting rid of it. Soften the old armor, he's letting his defences get a little softer and vulnerable. He hopes he can clear everything out and everything will be better by stepping through his shadow because even though it was tramatic things to release, there is still a false sense of security to hold on to them.

I agree. It's one of my favourite pieces of mind melting drumming. BUT, I once heard Carey talking about that exact fill. He said when he does clinic's it's always the most requested thing. He seemed confused by this, and maybe slightly disappointed that people noticed this part of his drummer over parts he perhaps rates more highly. He explained it, it made no sense to me, but he kept saying its actually a very simple and straight forward idea. Doesn't sound it to me, but the man himself seems to consider it something relatively simple believe it or not lol
@MMAVoodoo8 ай бұрын
@@skeletalwreck I think it's the way the guitar and bass hold the rhythm duties while the drums go off... It makes this drum solo sound smooth and wild even as he hits off the main beat accents and fills... On top of the brilliant arrangement that is moving the song forward to its apex

Something about the way they make everything contradict is mesmerizing, his voice is both soft and hard, the music melodic yet chaotic, it’s everywhere and I only wish I had heard them sooner, not to mention the respect that they’ve earned among other bands and in the music industry in general due to their attitude of not giving a shit of what anyone thinks, part of the reason they refuse to put their music on streaming services too

Y'all gotta understand, and even Maynard would confirm this, but TooL is centered around the rhythm of drummer Danny & bassist Justin, rounding out with Adam's guitar. Maynard's vocals, although beautifully tragic and rife with thoughtful lyrics are secondary to the band, he's more of the icing on the cake that is that sweet sweet rhythm section - namely Danny.

Copied from Wikipedia: "Popular belief dictates that the song title references an idea first conceived by Carl Jung and later expounded upon by Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a currently disharmonious state. The premise is that humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek. Furthermore, it is believed the song references a wish to experience change through the "shadow"; an idea which represents the parts of one's identity that one hates, fears, and represses, this exists as a recurring theme in the work of Carl Jung."

"Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; " I'm not religious, and I'm far from it, but I looked it up cause I didn't know what Psalm 46:2 was. If you consider this tune to be apart of the album Aenima, which is about LA breaking off and falling into the ocean, then it sort of makes sense, but that's really abstract. If you try to make a religious connotation about it, it simply doesn't work at all, like it doesn't make sense, so your statement is true in that regard.
@eman2011937 жыл бұрын
That's interesting...One thing we tend to do today is take the teachings of the bible and interpret them literally, but consider these teachings as being a dramatic story told over generations and generations. So, maybe interpret Psalm 46:2, as it pertains to the individual's struggle with his/her shadow, as not being obstructed by fear, though your life should change, and though the summit of your being slips into the depths of your soul; go into the darkness, face your fears, and evolve. I don't think MJK had this in mind and was in fact referencing Carl Jung but still interesting to think about. Look up Jordan Peterson if your interested in religion. Big influence of Peterson is Carl Jung

46 & 2 refers to chromosomes. A regular human has 46. Someone who has 46 & 2 reaches the Christ Consciousness. Essentially it is a sort of enlighten state. It allows a human to evolve to the next leveling being. The song is basically about trying to reach this state. Most of the lines refer to this struggle. The term Muscle Memory refers to genes and genetic history. The shadow is part of your self image. It based on a Carl Jung theory. The old armor is his body. So the chorus is basically him saying I am looking into myself for the path and will help me leave this body/state of being

Tool is at the deep end of the pool guys - This song and whole album definitely require more than one listen to fully appreciate (as if anyone ever could fully appreciate it) - every time you hear it it it gets deeper and more "evolved" - you hear things you where unable to hear before - understand things you couldn't fathom before. It is over 20 years old now and It is still as fresh today as it was when it came out - Fits well with the meaning in the song - - Evolving into the next iteration of Human kind - evolving spiritually and physically - opening the 3rd eye completely and becoming the Godhead- think of your DNA and Chromosomes - and the music ..... It is perfection /Drums, Bass, and guitar playing off of each other seamlessly all while the vocals convey cryptic meaning as well as melodic instrumentation as well - that whole album is a masterpiece.

We are born with 23 pairs of Chromosomes (23 from mom and 23 from dad = 46). Other primates have 24 pairs. The idea is that if humans are to evolve to the next level we have to go to 24 pairs, or 48 (23 pairs + 2 = 48, or 46 and 2!). Or at least that is the popular theory about the song. Based on writings by Carl Jung, and the future human development.

James T humans are more evolved than other primates so maybe we will lose chromosomes

Take that up with Carl Jung. It's was his theory not mine.
@JackHiper7 жыл бұрын
Carl Jung's theory not mine. And evolution doesn't state things are more or less evolved, there is no end goal. Its just a way of accounting for variation in life forms.

You're right about the theme of evolution. 46 and 2 refers to the Drunvalo Melchizedek theory of physical evolution, in which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes. I think Tool are geniuses for structuring a song based on this principal.
@skildude7 жыл бұрын
we know now that we technically have 48 chromosomes. 2 sets are fused. the connecting telomeres are deactivated as is the extra centromere region
@lukefowles66417 жыл бұрын
The fused chromesones also prove evolution is true not intelligent design it was a great discovery.

The shadow self is also a very strong Jungian notion, and the incorporation of the shadowself into the dominate consciousness is a very big part of his work. When one incorporates the shadow, one becomes a whole person, and not before.

I appreciate people taking the time to understand the song instead. Also they've been very clear about the fact that they'll pauze the video x)
@magdalena4176 жыл бұрын
Emberalus they should let the verse finish before pausing.... just saying.
@emberalus22296 жыл бұрын
magdalena417 Everyone processes music in their own way and some people rather break a song up in small segments so it's easier for them to progress. I don't really see why it's neccesary to listen to the entire thing eventhough it's just a verse, and if it helps them create some understanding for the song and the band I feel like it's only better for them to do so.
@victishonoresports51135 жыл бұрын
fun fact, tool has their instrumentals made with no input from the singer, he receives the music, and makes lyrics to it.

Welcome to TOOL - you guys nailed it. It's cerebral, it means whatever it means to you. Maynard never discusses the meaning of the lyrics and treats the vocals as a 4th instrument. He actually stands at the back of the stage. There is a ton to unpack and you can listen to TOOL for 20 years and still find something new in there each time. For many it's an acquired taste, for some they H8 on it because they don't get it, for musicians we're mesmerized. Tool songs mean different things to me at different points in life, but the music sets a mood and is always there to explore in it's intricacies. In some ways, the best way to listen to TOOL is to zoom OUT, and just let the feel of the whole thing hit you. Was looking forward to this one. Thanks for the honest and open-minded review.
@jamiestark7 жыл бұрын
Based on interviews with MJK it is absolutely true. That is not to say I'm not aware of and don't agree with the generally accepted meaning of the song. A lyricist is always coming from a place, but MJK has made it clear on multiple occasions that he aspires for and intends the etherial.
@mg-ThisHandleIsSoStupid7 жыл бұрын
@ Stark Jamie- "He actually stands at the back of the stage." Unfortunately yes, he does that now. Back in the early shows he was one of the most charismatic and amazing live performers. Had never seen anything like it. Like he was possessed and did things with his body that looked inhuman. Brought the music to new levels. Now he just stands in the back. Personally don't see why anyone would see them live now. A nice light show?
@jamiestark7 жыл бұрын
it's the danny carey show. i'm completely bias as a drummer. and they've evolved quite a bit. Opiate and Undertow would have made no sense with him in the back. Trust me, I remember the days of painted up and wearing bras! it's also interesting that as he's gone to the back in Tool and APC - even to some degree in Puscifer - he has the most public persona he's ever had with respect to interviews about music and wine. He's a conundrum for sure.
@mg-ThisHandleIsSoStupid7 жыл бұрын
