What Happened to Eminem's D12?

D12, a Detroit based rap group fronted by Eminem, was formed in the mid ’90s and rose to mainstream prominence in the early 2000s. Both of their albums, Devils Night and D12 World, went platinum and their single “My Band” reached number one on the rhythmic Top 40. But as time passed, the group slowly became less active and in 2018 Eminem released the apology track to his D12 members titled “Stepping Stone” which ends with the bar “it’s not goodbye to our friendship but D12 is over.”
D12 was one of the hugest rap groups of the aughts. They were all super talented and came with a co-sign from the highest-selling rapper of all time. Despite this, none of them gained any traction as solo acts.
So what went wrong?

Proof’s death was the end of the group. It reminds me of Pun dying and that being the end of the original Terror Squad lineup. Proof was the glue of the group, the way that Pun was the glue of the original Terror Squad. I still remember the day that Devil’s Night came out. I bought the CD at the local Coconuts record store, right before I headed to school to take the Spanish regents exam. That same morning, Ice-T was in my neighborhood shooting an episode of Law & Order. My friend met him. I didn’t see him, I just saw the trailers on the street.

Living just outside of Detroit back then, you couldn't stop at an intersection without hearing one of those CDs playing in someone's car. Anything Eminem touched around here was guaranteed to go platinum. You might run into Proof at a store or Kuniva at a restaurant. When Proof died, around here, it was a huge deal. At a time when, every week, there was a new one hit wonder rap song and catch phrase on the radio, we always had Eminem and D12. Those were good days.

Boy can i say a lot about D12. The Dirty Dozen. Detroit 12. D Twizzy. When i was 13, i was getting into hop hop. I had just purchased the MMLP on CD. I had loved the song ‘under the influence’ with d12. I was curisous about the group and asked as much people as I could. Nothing had appeared to be known about the group. About a year later Devils night came out. I was in love. Everything about it. The members, beats, record, art. Loved them. Thanks for bringing back some memories

I met Swift and Obie Trice in the gold coast a few years ago when they toured for the Cheers album anniversary. That was a highlight of my life. Swift and Kon Artist (Mr Porter) were my favourite D12 members. I got to chill with them in the green room cause i was friends with every one of the opening artists and their security. Swift, Obie and all of us were debating who won the Pusha T, Drake beef. Swift said Drake cause he had funnier bars, and to him winning a battle is to make the crowd laugh at your opponent. But Obie sided with Pusha T. While Swift was posing taking a photo with a chick, i said a line from my favourite verse of his "Hailies Revenge" while he was smiling, he said the next line through his teeth. After, he came over and we rapped the whole verse together! It was a dream come true! Rapping one of my favourite verses with one of my favourite rappers! And Swift said it was Obie who actually came up with the hook for that song, which is a dope piece of trivia

@Tien Most Powerful Human On Earth @GoalSquad there is more too the hook than the "doe rae mi" and "ma ma macosa" parts where Em is dissing Ja. Swift never specified if Obie actually wrote it, or just came up with the idea to incorporate the doe rae mi part into the diss as a hook. My guess is the latter, but its possible it could be the first. I could see Obie potentially writing something like that. I have other funny stories from that night. The DJ of the opening acts and i have a good mutual friend and she warned me about him, saying the dude was fxxkin crazy. On stage he was drinking all sorts liquor using a literal real human skull as a cup. (All while Obie and Swift were still performing) When i went out back to the green room to get some air, the DJ legit brought a big ass staple gun and was convincing people to let him staple their nipples. The dude said "yo dare me to put a staple through my balls" everyone laughed like "no! fxxx that!" But he did it anyway and stapled his balls to his leg. My friends who opened got their nipples stapled and was like "fxxx yeah!! Staple gang!!!" I was like "fxxx that, i aint tryna impress anyone, nobody stapling my titties"

This is a good video, but I want to point out, even though it has some truth about Eminem's white audience only liking Eminem's music and not necessarily Hip-Hop, I also think a lot of people who has that same thought process about Eminem's fanbase also overlook how many white people in his fanbase that love Hip-Hop because he spark their interest in the first place. Even the former white fans that are really into hip-hop and stop listening to him since they were kids, at the end of the day, he still got them into Hip-Hop. Both things could be true.

Also, Eminem's current fanbase is not the same as it was years ago years ago, so I am curious what the current generation thinks of him. "My band" "fight music" etc just a few of my favorite.

The title for this video pretty much encapsulates it. The video isn’t called what happened to D12, rather what happens to Eminem’s d12

What happened to them is unique just like what happens to every other artists and group is unique but it's still the same at the end of the day. Times change people change and that's just life. The people alive that are big fans during an artist rise to the top will always be their core audience. Kids listening will always hold a special place for him but they will get older and grow into something else. The older generation listening to them may light their music but they will never really be their favorites cuz they had a favorite when they were younger. The people in the middle who are around the same age as the artist will love them in a different way and when they get older they will morph into other stuff also but the artist will always hold a special place in their heart. I am 42 so I was a kid when rap first started and fell in love with it. Those rappers who started out in the '80s will always be my favorites but if they made new music now I would be a fan of it but it would hit differently. As much as I love Jay Z and I'm always happy when he puts out music he will never have that same bus and the fact that he had in the late 90s to early 2000s when he took over and that's okay that's normal natural and that's no knock against anybody. Hip hop and rap is basically a sign of the times and although the music may sound good years later it's more of a nostalgic thing. It's a little outdated but you still love it because you feel at home with it it gives you a feeling and makes you think back to what you were doing around that time. It's funny because at the time I liked this group but I wasn't in love with their music but as I've gotten older and here they're old songs from time to time I appreciate it more simply from a Nostalgia standpoint

what I'll always love about D12 is it's the perfect example of 1 boy getting big and bringing all his mans along with him. nowadays guys like little baby still bring all the boys along with him (props) but em really lifted all his guys up with him and gave them a platform.

Although I was around 7 years old when D12 World dropped, I remember hearing My Band literally everywhere. And even though Eminem was my favorite rapper at the time, I didn’t pay much attention to d12 outside of that. But this for me the peak Shady Aftermath in general. At least what I can remember of it lol Eminem, D12, 50, G-Unit, Obie, Dre still producing beats for everyone, Game, And Detox actually still seeming likely lol. It was pretty nice to see. And to this day, I’m still a fan of the Re Up album. Even though some label that album the start of the downfall of Shady Records, it was still solid ass work to me.

I always wondered why the D12 members never appeared as solo artists on Eminem's albums. As far as I know there was only 1 solo feature and that was Bizarre on Amityville (MMLP). By the way, I think Hannicap Circus could keep up very well with Devil's Night and D12 World in terms of quality.

I bought “Searching for Jerry Garcia” day 1 and it is classic IMO. There has to be more to why it wasn’t a Shady release. It has a 50 feature (recycled chorus) and Eminem on a few hooks. Could have been bigger. I had two of the D12 mixtapes but never knew about Kuniva & Swift solo joints. Going to seek them out. Great vid.

Really what happened to D12 isn’t really that uncommon with a lot of rap groups especially if you have members that also have solo careers. It’s not that different from the NWA story, what happened to G-Unit, what happened to slaughterhouse, what happened to Wu-Tang, yes some of these groups did later on in their career have some of the members get back together and put out an album under that name but it’s just what happens to a lot of hip-hop groups. I know what Wikipedia says but if you ask any member of D 12 including Eminem himself, they will all see that Proof was the leader of D12, just like Eazy E was to NWA. Yes Eminem was the biggest solo star but Proof was the leader of the group and it’s really hard for hip-hop groups to continue after the one that was holding everything together passes away. And just like NWA did in the late 90s early 2000s there were times that we thought D12 was going to get back together and put out an album. I remember seeing stuff on social media and pictures of Eminem in the other four guys in the studio and then a year or two would go by and instead of a full length album we would get AD 12 mixtape and Eminem would be on the mixtape but not on every song. Kind of like NWA when they got back together and they did a song for the next Friday soundtrack and for ice cubes album and they said they were going to do another album and they decided without Eazy-E that it just couldn’t be done. Same thing with D12. If you look at all of the rap group so I named most of them only put out two LPs. NWA, slaughterhouse, g-Unit, Wu-Tang did get back together like 15 years later but it wasn’t the full group. There’s so much money that the record companies take from rappers as it is. So if the group only gets a dollar for every album sold once you start having to split $1.00 six ways it isn’t a lot of money.

D12 fell completely apart when Proof was killed because that completely tore Eminem up. Proof was the glue that tightly held the group together, not saying that they were at odds with each other at all. When Proof got killed the whole spark quickly went away, and that's the main reason as to why Eminem stepped away from the rap scene for several years, and he even thought about quitting. RIP Proof

for anyone new to this that is interested a few tracks you can listen to from these times are: "Beautiful" (verses recorded 2007, before Em's overdose) "Not Afraid" (This is a track of Marshall promising to never Relapse again, a double entendre jab at his previous album that he ended up not liking in hindsight) "Deja Vu" (A somewhat mono-tone description of Em's addictive tendencies) "Castle and Arose" (These two tracks will tell you a lot about that specific time in 2007, also his thoughts on losing Proof at the time and how he eerily predicted his death in the "Like Toy Soilders" music video recorded 2 years prior.. it shows how that actually fucked with his head quite a lot whenever he would see Proof's/D12 posters at his studio and home) and I see people see this change as a "clone" or even worse "android" but can't see that he just changed his lifestyle and can't believe he can still rap like he does at 50, have to call him a hollywood created robot from 06? i think they say lmao.. I just say listen to the music, you'll hear emotions no machine could replicate.
