I hope you're hungry because we're about to go on a street food eating binge on Hiroshima's amazing island, Miyajima. It's a street food paradise and in this episode we're going to attack the following foods:
★ Hiroshima Oysters / 広島牡蠣
- Grilled (yaki gaki) 400 yen ($4)
- Deep fried (kaki furai) 300 yen ($3)
★ Deep fried Momiji Cake filled w/ Custard / 揚げもみじ 180 yen ($1.80)
★ Miyajima Nigiri, white fishcakes with Bacon and Asparagus / 宮島にぎり天 300 yen ($3)
★ Conger Eel ANAGO steamed bun or Anagoman / あなごまん 450 yen ($4.50)
★ Okonomiyaki, a savory grilled Japanese pancake / お好み焼き
1200 yen ($12)
Where is Miyajima? It's 15 minutes by train from JR Hiroshima Station and a 15 minute ferry ride to the island.

@@WorkLifeJapan I have a nice 300mm x 450 mm print that I took years ago of the TORII Gate at Miyajima. My mate printed it really well. Nice colour in the sky. taken back in the transparency / slide film days. I think I better get there again, in 2021, but, never in Japanese summer. Too hot and humid

Miyajima was one of my buddy & myself's highlight, when we were in Japan two years ago. I'm not a seafood eater but there was plenty of great food on the island for me to eat. My buddy on the other hand, was in seafood paradise. We pigged out while we were there. LOL! It's a must visit place. Great place to walk around, eat, climb Mt.Misen for the picturesque views to enjoy & relax. :)

Those fried cakes are essentially Japan's version of deep-fried Twinkies. And those oysters are like something you'd find on the Gulf Coast. The fish cakes remind me of Creole cuisine. This episode reminds me of The South.

Hi, John, i saw your post on instagram so i'm here to watch your show again! I was in the middle of lunch but that doesn't matter anymore because i've been waiting for this video for a long time! Here's a question for you: as a tourist who doesn't speak japanese, not to mention reading, would it be difficult to navigate through the street food in miyajima, or are there people who speak english, or english menus? Thank you so much for the great videos and i am looking forward to the live streams from the Only in Japan GO channel as well! I loved seeing your hitchhiking trip!
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andoria! Thank you for tracking back from instagram! Great question on Japanese speaking for tourists. In this area, foreign tourists outnumber the locals 20 to 1. If you include Japanese tourists, it's like 40 to 1 so from 10am to 5pm, the island is full of people who cannot speak Japanese. The store owners all speak enough English to sell you what you're interested in, but most can't have a full conversation with you about complicated things. I had a discussion about this with a few owners (in Japanese) and they all were so thankful that visitors come to the island but they get tired too because actually not everyone speaks English or Japanese. I don't think you'll ever have any problem navigating Miyajima with English only but as someone who can speak Japanese, the store owners and hotel staff light up when you try to speak Japanese! The effort is always very much appreciated. Google Translate App is free and you can take a picture of the Japanese menu and 75% of the time you can translate it! You can also use the app offline by downloading the Japanese language pack. It is a very useful took and also helps you learn some Japanese as you go. Thank you for supporting the new GO channel and I have a new live stream coming up very very soon. Can't wait!! -john
@Andoria07
@Andoria07 7 жыл бұрын
Wow! Your answer is so complex and complete! I wasn't expecting that! Thank you very much! I'll take your advice and try to learn some japanese before i reach Japan and have the Google Translate app handy. Also, i wanted to send you my regards from Romania. I was so shocked hearing you say "buna ziua" to a romanian tourist back in Miyajima when i watched one of your facebook clips! That really made my day! You are full of surprises! Oh, and i can't wait for your next live stream! I'll be watching you! hahaha

Miyajima is a tourist trap. I felt like I used my time poorly going there from Hiroshima and I was only there for like 3 hours. It seems to be all about the deer and that is about it, I would suggest skipping it.

When I visited it a couple of years ago, I had a train back to Tokyo to catch after Miyajima, so I didn't want to risk it with the eel bun and instead got the beef bun from the same shop. Still would definitely recommend. Also got a (non-fried) momiji manju for the road. It was very good.
