RAMEN!! When you come to Japan, you know this is a meal not to be missed and Sapporo is home to some of Japan's best ramen restaurants.
One place in particular has a long history of serving hungry customers. SAPPORO RAMAE ALLEY or Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho (元祖さっぽろラーメン横丁) in Japanese is located in Sapporo's Susukino entertainment district and provides bowls from 11:00 to past midnight. Miso Ramen is the specialty - the toppings? It can get quite creative!
BUTTER
CORN
CRAB MEAT / LEGS
SCALLOPS
WOOD EAR MUSHROOMS
CHARGRILLED PORK CHASHU STEAKS
... are just a few ramen toppings / extras we will try in this episode.
Sapporo Ramen Alley started officially in 1951 and many shops have come and gone through the years. Older shops like AJI NO KANRYU have been serving ramen since 1965 which newer shops that came recently have set up vending machine payment services that allow you to see a photo on the machine before paying.
I asked why miso ramen was so popular in Sapporo. One shop owner said it's because a department store featured it at a Hokkaido food festival and it just sort of became a hit!
Space is limited in many smaller shops, many are counter only -- and popular shops usually have a line out the door at peak times.
Best to go early and if you have to wait - there is probably a good reason for it. VERY GOOD RAMEN!
In this episode I ate these ramen shops at Ramen Alley:
1) Menya Kunimitsu / 麺屋 國光
Ramen: Hokkaido Mori Ramen
北海道盛りラーメン
(Big Hokkaido Ramen)
¥1600
2) Aji no Kanryu / 味の華龍
Ramen: Corn Butter Ramen
コーンバターラーメン
¥1000
3) Teshikaga Ramen / 弟子屈ラーメン
Ramen: Chashu Grilled Pork Spicy Miso Ramen
チャーシュー焼豚味噌ラーメン
¥910

I subscribe to dozens of KZbin channels, but I think it's safe for me to say that +ONLY in JAPAN is my favorite. The videos are sporadic (understandable when one is that busy), but when I see a new video post, I get SO excited and have to watch immediately. Thank you for all of the great work, John, and for responding personally (and kindly) to some of the posts. Most people with this many subscribers will never respond. We appreciate it, good sir.

Wow, 1600 yen is the equivalent of 13 euro, which translate in 15 to 16 US dollars, which is not very much. I pay a lot more here in Dublin, which is a shame because they have to readjust their recipes to Irish palate. For example, I was travelling to Paris three weeks ago and I went to several Asian restaurants, and I have to say that the quality of the food there was incredible. It was also really cheap, in between 7 and 8 euro max, although you need a local to take you to these hidden places.

@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN 8 жыл бұрын
I will get deeper into the ramen broth in a future episode but I think each shop does it differently. I believe most use pork bone and there is no fish taste to it. I don't think they use any "dashi" fish stock. One shop I visited in Tokyo used shrimp for their stock. THAT WAS FISHY ... or shrimpy ... (KEISUKE RAMEN in Takadanobaba) but normally if you don't want seafood topping, you'll get a bowl of pork based soup with noodles. -John

Gandalf TheStoned Usually, you won't taste fish base in your "miso Ramen" especially. Some Sapporo Ramen place add fish stock in their soup to taste lighter, but because most of them uses pig feet, seaweeds, and vegetable stocks, fish base really won't stand out. If you order other Hokkaido Ramen (especially from Kushiro, Hakodate, mostly by sea) with salt or soy source, you have higher chance to encounter fish base soup. :)

Who the hell started saying that "slurp is a compliment for the chef?" I'm a Japanese but I've never heard such a thing here. If you do not slurp, nothing matters.

Delwyn Garcia Maybe you can bring earplugs. haha But actually I didn't know that Westerners are that disgusted by slurping. I'm curious about why some people (like the guy in the video) don't care of slurping and even try it while some others just cant stand it.

@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN 8 жыл бұрын
Sure! There was an Italian tomato ramen ... can't say it was any good. Lots of dishes with little meat (meat is used to enhance the flavor of many Japanese dishes, not as the main course) but still, many vegetable dishes have meat. You can fine anything in Tokyo though. Highly recommend soba or udon with is meatless. You can add tenpura to it if you like :) -John

+Comet Ak there used to be a halal ramen shop here but it went out of business a couple of months ago :( there are halal options in Sapporo. Ask tourist information inside Sapporo Station. It's quite a large office. They know the newest halal places. Japan has been making a big push to know more about different diets. -John
