There are many groups in the world where it is STILL acceptable to marry a first cousin.

For sure. It’s encouraged sometimes.

So something like this happened in my own family, except much more recently. My grandpa was married twice. The children in the first family were several years older than my father, son of the second wife. My grandpa marries my grandma and his son (from the first wife) married my grandma's (his step mom's) younger sister. They have a child who is my dad's niece and first cousin (niece from brother's side, first cousin from aunt's side). The family names get tangled up pretty quickly. My grandpa and uncle were brothers in law. My grandmother's sister was her daughter in law. My grandpa was uncle and grandpa to the same girl.

My mother's mother had twin sisters who married twin brothers. They lived side by side. Twin wife A died. Twin husband B died. Twin husband A remarried Twin wife B. Those children were all double first cousins and a new set were also half siblings. All perfectly normal.

In central Illinois about 1971 when I was 18, I was on a third date with a cute guy and we were visiting with some older relatives I ran into at a park. In the course of our conversation, we discovered we were related, third cousins. Ummm. That was our last date!

I found some common ancestors in my maternal grandmother's family. I was like "oh no!!". It was a marriage between 1st cousins in the late 1700's. I figured that it was acceptable back then since Jane Austen's characters in Mansfield Park are 1st cousins!

It was very acceptable, even desirable

It’s would probably surprise folks how other we find cousins marrying in a clients family tree. I’d be willing to say it’s probably a little more that 50% if the time we find it.z

In earlier versions of Family Tree Maker, before later versions sanitized relationships, I was my father's 6th cousin. I finally figured it out by looking back to two of my 5th great grandfather's children by two marriages (alleged) to different wives and having many children. Two of those their children now second cousins married This all happened in Virginia around 1800. I'm not totally positive that my GGGGG Grandfather actually had two wives but if not, that means first cousins married. Confusing as this information is it came from various sources in the family. I think I need to have Family Tree Nuts do more research for me to figure this out and figure out some of the more confusing relationships in the family including my Gregg families in Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.

I’d say that is very probable. The further we go back the smaller the population and we are all so connected in many ways.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. One of my 5th great grandfathers was the son in law to the brother of his brother inlaw. So his wife became not only the niece of his brother in law but also the sister in law to her uncle. One of his grandsons married one of the granddaughters of his brother in law. I'm still trying to figure out the family for those generations. I figure that there is probably more truth than fiction to the song I am my own grandpa. But with things different back then and fewer people on the frontier it does make sense.

Oh man, I’m going to have to get the paper and pencil for this one. Yes with small populations it’s surly can become mixed up. However, imagine small communities in medieval Europe.

We have cousins who are double cousins closely related in my family, but each parent had no relation and they are absolutely no inbreed from the matches. There are about three sets in my family. Example. My second cousin’s dad is my first cousin. And her mom is my second cousin once removed, yet her parents have absolutely no relation. Second set, we have my other cousins who are logans both by moms, but their dads are from another family (my family) and are brothers who both had children by the logans. There parents also have no relation. Then we hve my cousin whose dad had a child by a woman then later on had a child by her niece, so in this unfaithful match of betrayal- the ladies are half sisters first cousins. I must admitt, maybe dna memory or epigenetics but the child born of such betrayal seems to be as turbulent as her birthing situation and caused her dad much grief. Like she was the ultimate payback for his first love.
