No, he has wrong 'facts' about India. British were in power when sati was abolished but it was brainchild of Raja rammohan Roy who was Indian. Credit to the people at the time who he was able to convince but it wasnt in any way an initiative by the british. He also said it was the British who brought universities to India? Is he joking? Nalanda and taxila and many more universities existed in India at a time when the British people were nothing more than barbarians eons ago. He also said Indian population soared at like no point in history when Brits were there due to british medicine? So much blood money was sucked out of India that majority people couldn't afford it at the time, so no chance of taking them. Also, modern medicine made great advances in latter part of 19th century and beyond, not before, which meant most of the British Empire wasn't under it. Besides, growing at an unprecedented rate is also due to an exponential birth rate which is just a basic understanding of statistics and history at the time. Life expectancy was in the 40s when the British left in the 20th century. It was much worse before. All of his 'facts' and context behind them are either screwed up or just wrong. Rather than being caustic contrarian, look at the facts in an objective manner and forget he has to defend the evils committed by the British empire for brits to feel 'good' about it. Disappointing from a 'historian' from Cambridge no less

When he said universities he clearly means our modern understanding of them and the modern Socratic method was created in Britain. Common law based legal systems still persist in former empire countries and compared to countries colonised by other powers the former British ones are relatively thriving. Horrors were surely committed in India by Britain without a doubt but that has happened during every great empire and the Mughals were even worse. In hindsight would anyone argue that the Roman Empire was a net negative to humanity ? In the decades and centuries to come the British empire in aggregate will be seen as a net positive.

For that matter, between 1500 and 1700, 10s of thousands of women were burned in Europe for witchcraft. Also, even when the burning of women for witchcraft ceased in europe, in continued in the early american colonies until the late 1700s - e.g virginia witch trials. Saying that the british introduced higher education and universities to India - big joke. The oldest universities existed in India when britian was barely in the iron age e.g. Takshashila University and Nalanda. before the British, Hindus had a Gurukul academy education system, Sikhs had their own academy system known as a Taksaal. The british undermined Indian education systems and supressed Indian knowledge to push their own english based chritsian centric education to create a sense of intellectule inferiority among Indians, when India became independant - this system of western centric thinking and english based inferiority continued for up to 5 decades.....
