I’ve often wanted to go back. But after seeing several videos of Flagstaff as it is now? I’m having second thoughts. Sometimes memories should be left alone...

Boy how it's changed, in the earlier days it was much quieter with a captivating atmosphere , 7000 feet in altitude and far less busy, not so much construction either. @Cameron Mason Miller What is Flagstaff like in terms of employment, wages and cost of living?
@wannabetowasabe4 жыл бұрын
After graduation from NAU, I lived just north and west of the large civic center. I made a left turn just past (north) of the train overpass. I lived on Sitgreaves street. I need to go back and spend a little time in the area. In my 6 years in Flagstaff I explored the northern portion of Arizona extensively. Hiked most of the south rim trails and a couple of north rim trails at Grand Canyon National Park. Hiked some in the southern Utah slickrock country as well. Explored the eastern Rim Country on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. NAU was a fantastic place to go to college! The big hole in my Arizona experience is I-19 to the New Mexico border and south of I-10. I haven't taken one trip in that large area. I have a lot of family in the greater Phoenix area. However, I live by the 11th Commandment of Coconino County, "thou shall not travel south of Camp Verde between April 15th and October 30th."
@AlexCab_494 жыл бұрын
@@wannabetowasabe April 15-October 30 because of the heat? And what are the other coconino commandments?
@wannabetowasabe4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexCab_49 Yes, the heat. It is even worse for me now as I haven't lived below 6500 for 47 years and have been at 8,000 for 31 of that. Camp Verde in the summer is far too hot for me now. I think the 11th Coconino Commandment was the only one to rise to that level. At the time I lived there, by big city standards, there wasn't any shopping in Flagstaff. None of the big chains were in town at the time. I didn't care as I don't consider shopping to be an essential activity. That is what catalog shopping (especially Sears) was for as well as being a minimal consumer. Now catalogs are online, but the basic principle is nearly 150 years old in rural and small town areas. I suppose there was common knowledge to not hike in the Grand Canyon in the summer, the time to go was in the other 8-9 months. There are the 3 rules of living in snow: never steal a person's firewood, parking space and don't dump snow on someone else's property. This is universal wherever a significant pack of snow exists all winter. However, a yearly average of 100 inches of snow in Flagstaff really isn't a lot. I left Flagstaff 42 years ago, so maybe someone has more current info than I.

Flagstaff resident here! Snow's not too bad lately, been having pretty dismal snowfall the past couple years. I suppose last year might've been a bit rough, what with breaking a single day record, but it hardly snowed after we got that 3 feet in one day. Ice is the big problem here more than snow. Snow will stick on the ground long enough to melt and freeze a hundred times over and then the ice never leaves! I'd recommend coming in the spring at the end of the snow season or in the fall when the only snow we got is on the mountain. Cool to see this in my recommended! Now I'm just looking for myself on the road...

I note this was ten days ago, and as you point out, it's hot, even up there in the pines. It's finally not so bad in the Kingman area, but of course, still hot. We lived for years in Havasu, and it's hell on earth in the summer, which is endless. If the heat starts up later, it stays hot until Christmas, if it starts up early, it's uncomfortable even before spring starts. I dunno, I think whomever thought AZ was a nice place to live was out of their minds, but c'est la vie. Wish we were up where you're going right now. That is indeed a long grade from just east of Seligman up beyond Williams, especially if you're pulling a heavy trailer or fifth wheel. Have fun up in Flag. I'll be watching.

What you were seeing was an eastbound intermodal on the BNSF Southern Transcon, and the Seligman Subdivision. The transcon runs from Chicago to Los Angeles, and covers the states of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The Seligman Subdivision runs from Winslow Arizona to Needles California. Both the transcon and the Seligman Subdivision runs through Flagstaff. Just west of Flagstaff near exit 190 on I-40 is the Arizona Divide. At its summit it is 7,335 feet above sea level, and represents one of the hardest climbs other than Cajon Pass in Southern California that both west and eastbound trains have to traverse. The Southwest Chief runs the transcon with the exception from Shawnee Kansas to Emporia, then from Emporia Kansas to Belen Junction south of Albuquerque. Then the Chief will join the transcon on the Gallup Subdivision all the way to Los Angeles. The Southwest Chief runs daily service from Chicago to Los Angeles, and serves the states of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
