It’s good to see a video like this, I like the new format. Ridley Scott is on top of his historical game as always, whether it’s black Romanz n’ sheit, sickly looking jewish emperors that in no way resemble their 100% olive oil human cannonball real life counterpart, or even gladiators riding rhinos. He’s always so accurate! He made an amazing film called Kingdom of Heaven almost 20 years ago and his depiction of medieval Europe being gray, Godless and covered in filth is just so accurate, it’ll blow your mind! I mean there were films he made like this one called The Duellists or something boring, but let’s be honest, nobody believed those clearly high fantasy outfits, and those ‘hussars’ never even existed, lmao. In all I can’t wait to see this with my wife (Drusilla) and her boyfriend!

Like I said in the video - this movie has a potential to create Ancient Rome fans. Do you expect everyone to suddenly find a passion for Rome by reading Ammianus? You need to start somewhere.

@@GAIVSCALIGVLA extremely precise and accurate historical movies are expensive to make, and the payoff for them is hit or miss. To be honest, I'm happy that both gladiator movies are historical fiction, as you can have a story based in Rome without actually trying to set a historical narrative. Like Tominus said, this movie has great potential to inspire a new generation of ancient Rome fans, and I'm all for it.

If there were to be an actual down to earth accurate film it would have to be done outside of Hollywood (of course it wholly depends on the topic, time and place). For instance, the 1970 film of Iphigenia, played by Greek actors (Irene Papas ❤️) acting in an ancient Greek story.

In honesty, Severan Dynasty being seen as beginning of (more) autocratic Rome and kickstarting Crisis Of Third Century (not to mention inflation crisis from military pay increases with Thrax staging a coup once Severus try to cut their pay) Plus being seen as originator of military strongman nature that even Diocletian’s divine right doesn’t work much (as far as I know, both it and Byzantine still inherit that issue and “open to everyone” nature of their throne).
@markusmodus2 ай бұрын
Originally I thought it might be the "Arch of Drusus" which was more likely an arch dedicated to Trajan along the Via Appia but if the two prominent buildings in the background are to be understood as the Flavian Amphitheatre (obviously), and I assume the temple is the Temple of Venus and Roma. For the Temple of Venus to be on the right hand side of the colosseum, you'd have to be walking along the Via Tiburtina or Via Nomentana situated in the north of the city, whereas the Via Appia is to the south. To my knowledge there not a known triumphal arch located in the north of the city. Also it must be stressed that the colosseum & Temple of Venus is too far too centrally located in the city to be seen from outside the walls of the city of Rome anyway. The trailer shows the colosseum being far closer to I presume are the Servian Walls but I wouldn't be surprised if they intended those walls to be the anachronistic Aurelian Walls

Yup its kind of funny that he made the Severans White (when they are likely Mixed Italian-Berber-Punic so Biracial by modern standards) and Macrinus Black (who is of a similar Mixed African Heritage) I guess because Severans are bad and Macrinus was killed because of Class background and so to parallel that with Modern Politics he did this.

I believe the Lucius Varus that co-ruled with Marcus Aurelias died by a plague. Dead right about Caracala, soldiers respected him for he would carry the eagle standard when marcjing with them Should be very fit.
@iDeathMaximuMII2 ай бұрын
Not much evidence that he died of plague. There is however some mentions that Lucius Verus was a sickly man. Prior to going to the East to fight the Parthians, he became dangerously ill. Marcus Aurelius rushed to him & it took Lucius a few days to fully recover I think this bout of illness is what really killed him. Because on most of the websites I've looked. Most of them just state that Lucius died of "natural causes" . No mention of the Plague really And yeah, I'm not really a fan of the casting choices for Caracalla & Geta. They were of mixed Libyan-Syrian blood. But they look so pale & look like they came from Ireland 😂 They look nothing like the 2 brothers

Caracalla (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus his real name as an emperor) and Geta appear in a family painting from Alexandria that you can see at the min 6:44 of this video, both had very light skin tone like their mother Julia Domna (Sirian origin), my opinion is that the removed face is the one of Caracalla because he destroyed Alexandria because some in the city had fun of the fact that he killed his brother and this maniac just for that killed thousands, he was a terrible emperor but the family had even worst memebers like Elagabalo his real succesor (Macrinus just ruled some months or a year and never went back to Rome after the disastrous peace he signed with the persians, so the character of the movie for me is not Caracalla, all is fiction so its like Elagabalo was the brother of Geta

It looks good to me. Rome imploded. This indicates that and this trailer seems to take that in the next step.

Everyone who cares is aware of the historical inaccuracies. He’s only explaining the topic for educational purposes, not saying to not watch the movie itself. But some people who are not aware of the inaccuracies, will take it as something from actual history. Unless they have a desire to know the truth, that they shouldn’t take Hollywood or Netflix as their history teachers, then this video as many others explaining like Metatron serves to bring that knowledge out into the light.
