I would say The Emperor of Mankind is heavily inspired by Emperor Aurelian. Both reconquered territories of the previous regime that had been lost to invasions/instability, both would have really dumb policies that would lead to their “death” (Aurelian’s strictness and economic policy, the emperors mega atheism and refusal to acknowledge chaos), both had successors that would try to remedy the situation post Aurelian/Emperor that would lead to varying degrees of success, and both would be seen as a God to some extent. Just replace the Goths with the Hrud or DEldar, Guilliman with Diocletian/Constantine and do a fat line of space coke then boom Dominate Rome in space.

I personally saw the Emperor as an Alexander the Great spreading """Greek""" influence, in this case Imperial Terran, across the stars with a repertoire of big personalities surrounding him, like the Primarchs. Which Alexander's generals could absolutely be considered as compared to Primarchs off personality types alone. When Alexander dies, the generals who have always hated each other broke out in civil war which led to their destruction over centuries.

Wizards of the colleges of magic in Warhammer are atheists because they understand the process of ascending to godhood. Chaos “gods” are just manifestations of the worst human emotions. Not real gods as we know them, if all life where to cease to exist the chaos gods wouldn’t continue to exist ether. That’s not how a real god would work.

I might actually find the Ultramarines interesting if they went more into their Roman inspiration. Gladii, scutum tower shields, red cloaks on every officer, crested helms, more formation based combat. Have them marching in phalanxes with power spears and bolters poking out from between breacher shields in the frontline. The only time I ever hear about them actually fighting like Romans was in Betrayer when the World Eaters fought them on Armatura, with their centurion, an ultramarine holding the obscure rank of Evocatus, a guy named Orpheo, shouting orders in Latin from behind the shield line.

The Romans also frequently elevated their Emperors to god status traditionally posthumously, however some of the more "eccentric" emperors insisted on an exemption to the die first rule. I guess sweetening you food and wine with lead has its disadvantages. Then again based on the number of emperors that failed to achieve a natural death, debilitating paranoia may have been a feature more than a bug.

Yeah. One of the perks of studying iranian history is that you have an outside perspective on the romans and seeing how they were forced to react to the romans constantly trying to shit on their boots by invading despite having been told numerous times that Iran was perfectly fine with the Euphrates as the border and wouldn't go further it really shows how having Rome as your neighbour was. The issue is when conquering foreign lands is seen as the pinnacle of political achievment in the neighbouring empire you are nearly certain that peacefull coexistence will not be possible. The romans would chill a bit after Trajan's defeat and Hadrian and more importantly Antoninus had an overtly anti expansionnist policy but things would go south again under Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius and stay that way untill Julian's disastrous campaign.

I think the Dwarven Army mechanics were more inspired by Imperial Romans than anything. High Elves were supposed to mirror Byzantine armies, the donut even looks like the black sea. Dark elves were Venice, the crossbow wielding and piratical mortal enemy of Byzantium. Wood elves were medieval English. Chaos Warriors were Vikings. Orcs and Goblins were Turks and Arabs. Ogres were Indian elephant armies. Skaven were supposed to be peasant rebellions. The Empire and Bretonnia mirrored their own historical equivalents. All of this of course was meant to mirror unit types and army tactics and had little to do with the fantasy fluff. The problem with the regiment system in warhammer fantasy is that it was more how a Napoleonic army functioned than a medieval or ancient one. You can see the strong Napoleonic influence from Rick Priestly and the Perry twins.
@vladprus4019

High Elves are basically the Atlantis combined with Tolkien elves. Dark Elves are more of elf fairies from legends of kind "We come after you, take you and do crazy stuff with you" (well, Dark Eldar from 40k have stronger elements than this). They could be also weird combination of Barbary pirates (raiding coastal villages in order to capture slaves) with American South (placed in the not-North America, economy based on slavery) Overall, Dark Elves seem to merge many things together (those Venetian-like units, as you noted). Wood Elves seem to also taking from those "dark fairies" stuff like Dark Elves, but combining it with forest vibes and wood Elves from Tolkien. Aesthetic -wise they get a lot from Celtic people from Gaul and Britain. Orcs and Goblins seem to be not have strong resemblance to any real life culture beyond British hooligans and stuff. They are mostly purely fantasy creations. Some have few aesthetics of some cultures like Hobgoblins resembling various cultures of the Eurasian Steppe, but those are not heavy. Ogres are more in line with Steppe people - beyond few aesthetic choices, the fact they can be found in many places in the Old World, just like steppe People were going in various parts of Eurasia with various level of friendliness of hostility, they also serve as mercenaries just like the Huns often did. Those are definitely not Arab, and Indian-like since.... we have Araby and Ind in Warhammer.

I think another big parallel of Fantasy Dwarves to Rome are holding generational grudges. Rome would hold historical grudges against rivals - something that is somewhat rare amongst civilizations of the time (sometimes these would last generations). Big examples are retrievals of lost Eagles that have been gone for decades!(Germanicus and Parthia) and the salting of Carthage. Also, there is a latin saying along the saying of "Only a Roman can kill a Roman". Romans were very proud and if you fucked with them, revenge was a certainty. Sound familiar?

Man, you haven't heard abaout the Chaos Dwarfs who chose to worship a chaos diety because it saved them after the old dwarf empire fell after the war of vengence against the elves ans the Norse Dwarfs who are isolated traditionalists. One could argue also that Southlands Dwarfs and the Grey Mountain Dwarfs are distinct from Worlds Edge Mountains Dwarfs but its at least their opinion scince those groups kindda hate eachother. @@pancreasnowork9939 Precisely. I've seen Arch making the comparision to Rome with the Empire of Man but the actually besieged nation is Kislev... which is Russia, the third rome. Another good argument would be the elves who had their schism, they invented most of arcane lore which all other mages outside of slann use and have this military control style that does remind me of Roman occupation. Thats how the wood elves treat brtonnia and how high elves see wider humanity. Overall, the Elven comparision fits better in my eyes. The Phoenix King's position is very reminiscient of the ceasar due to the Intrigue at Court effect (on tabletop you rolled which of your special characters got on top of choosing who commandsthe battle, now apply this to all of their politics), their population numbers looking grim and dark elves run the biggest slave network on the planet.

Don't think Cinncinatus was a dictator. He rose to power during a crisis (invasion) and 16 days after when he was victorious over the invaders relinquished power to be a farmer again or something like that.

It does always make me laugh that Big E was basically a fedora tipping edgy space Atheist but throughout the time he was turned into a literal god I think the major hick-up with 40k is bid E just being too stubborn to accept his divinity once he does things will start getting better for Mankind

There's not dozens of High Lords of Terra, there's twelve of them, they're a Council of the most important people of the Imperium, ruling it while the Emperor is... well unavailable ^^ And I think the Imperium is a lot more closer to the Middle-Ages in Space than to the Roman Empire in Space, Crusaders and Knights everywhere, living in the aermath of the collapse of a golden age civilization (aka the Roman Empire), and still using their language while the peasants speak a bastardized version of it, etc... Of course there's still inspirations from the Romans, and from countless other sours historical or fictionnal too ^^

Maybe the Alexander the Great is not leading a Roman legion, but a Greek one? Romans had ancient Greeks in extremely high regard and basically copied ALOT.

Idk I always associated the imperium with the Holy Roman Empire or France or some other medieval realm. You got medieval architecture, inquisitors, knighthood orders and chapters, crusades, fallen elder civilization, shitty Latin. However admitting this would just be admitting that imperium is empire of man in space
