History of Ancient Egypt: Dynasty XX - Sea Peoples, Late Bronze Age Collapse and the End of an Era

In this program we'll take a close look at the period spanning the 20th Dynasty of ancient Egypt, which may have arguably been one of the most trying times in the country's history. After years of internal turmoil, Egypt faced a massive foreign invasion by a mysterious group of marauders and migrants who modern scholars have collectively called the Sea Peoples. Not only did they threaten Egypt's vast empire in Canaan and the Levant, but possibly even the existence of the ancient Egyptian civilization itself. The aftermath of this great confrontation resulted in the gradual decline of Egypt's fortunes as a whole as well as the decay of perhaps its last great dynasty. With harem conspiracies, corruption and the famous royal tomb robberies and trials, the events and intrigues of 20th Dynasty Egypt could make for a great HBO series like Game of Thrones. Excellent series of videos! Your telling of Ramses' III war with the Sea People, his economic troubles and his assassination trial is the most extensive I've heard so far, without dwelling on the (likely) mummy of Pentawar... I visited the Valley last year, I was surprised by the size and quality of the tomb of Ramses IX (KV 6), though no doubt it has been well restored. I have read that the Ramessides built tombs intended for visiting (i.e. they were not hidden). KV 6 begins as a great long hall right at the entrance.

I didn't want to get too much into the lives of those two in this video since it's sole focus was DXX, plus it is considered by most not to be a historical document but a work of literature written later. I was also quoting a lot of other papyri in this video that I thought to read excerpts from that story might have been overkill for one episode. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll be sure to cover Wenamun in some program, whether on focused on politics or Egyptian literature, the latter which I hope to start in 2024.

I like your videos. Pulling historical information together from different sources and producing something so informative is well appreciated. I noticed in a previous video that there is a difference between the crown worn by Pharaoh of Upper Egypt and the crown of the Pharaoh of Lower Egypt. My curiosity is to ask about all the other headdresses that are seen in the art work. I suspect that the head gear and clothing indicate position and title.

Yeah I feel that Egyptian history just... I don't know how to describe it...I guess it just feels different. All of these regional power centers, relatively-short lived dynasties, foreign takeovers - there would never be another great pyramid age, literature like that of the Middle Kingdom or a pharaohs who commanded so much respect abroad like those of the New Kingdom. There were some good moments and very capable rulers, but overall I feel that the country continued its gradual decline with periods of stagnation here and there. Just my opinion, I'm sure others think differently. Thanks for watching!

Egypt is such a crazy topic to delve into. On one hand I’m drawn to it because the history is just so old and long. But on the other hand that’s the very thing that dilutes it for me. Take Rome for example. It was founded in 756BC had a brief kingdom and then a republic and then 27BC became an empire. And the empire collapsed in 476AD. I’m not CPU to h just the eastern portion which went on as the Byzantine empire. Rome fell in 476. so we have a tiny amount of time that they were on the map compared to Egypt. However, I can name the first 9 Roman emperors in order and could probably name all of them if given enough time (save the ones who were on the throne for a month or two). So I think the very thing that’s intriguing about Egypt the age, also dilutes it. At least for me

I always thought that Setnakhte was indeed a descendant of Ramesses II, however not one near the throne in the line of succession, maybe a son of the lesser sons, which is why he claimed his throne was given to him by gods. And by the time of Ramesses III, maybe the threat to their legitimacy had subsided, which is why Ramesses III was to free to copy his namesake? Because it’s quite uncommon for a pharaoh to take the name of another pharaoh of another dynasty’s regal name, especially the one just before it. Moreover, just as you said, most of the offices were populated by Ramesses II’s descendants, so it could have happened. What’s your opinion on that?

This channel is awesome. Just watched this last one in the Egypt playlist and now I don't know what happens next. This really puts the time when canaan turned into judah, israel, philistines, etc. into context. Everything up to this point is before the books of samuel and kings even took place.

Ramses XI really tried to reestablish order and the prestige of the institution of the pharaoh, that's why he inaugurated the Wehem Meswt era, or Renaissance, which he hoped would restore Egypt's former glory. Sadly the situation didn't allow it. He ended the 450 years long habit of pharaohs being buried in the Valley of the Kings because he knew his tomb would be robbed, and decided to be buried near Memphis, it is not known where exactly. I would stick to the chronology which puts the end of his reign in 1077 BC but that's just me!

Thanks so much for your comment and for watching! Yeah I'm of the school that the Renaissance was more a stunt pulled by Herihor, but that's just my opinion. With regard to Ramesses IX burial, that definitely might have been a consideration. The south was no longer really safe and with all of the political problems in Upper Egypt, I feel that he was probably not very popular there, let alone had much control of the area. Just my opinion. Since I've been mostly been using Ian Shaw's numbers, I used them in this episode too, hence 1069 BC for the end. Using the right or a single chronology has always been difficult for me when it comes to ancient Egypt, especially the further back one goes. I strove to be as accurate as possible with the dates but I suppose that's difficult when each major Egyptologist seems to have their own chronology depending on the period. Shaw, Redford, Dodson... all great Egyptologist but can be confusing when it comes to chronology. Anyway more on the way, stay tuned and thanks for the comment!

Anyone ask the question why was Egypt starving during this period? Unlike normal nations an Egypt wasn’t reliant on rain for enough water to farm the land, the Nile supplied it all. It’s always been a net grain exporter. So why was the country starving?

I took a DNA ancestry test through 23andme a few years ago. And it said that through my paternal-haplogroup (Father's side of the family) that Pharoah Ramesses III was one of my ancestors. I was shocked to say the very least. I even made a TikTok of it that's only viewable to friends. So thank you, Cy, for sharing information on this rather interesting dynasty as a whole.

Haplogroups don't demonstrate direct patrilineal or matrilineal descent, but rather indicate a shared populational ancestry. If a person A in 2023 and the remains of person B from 1100BC happen to share the same haplogroup, they can be said to share a common populational ancestry/origins which is very different to say thay person 1 is a direct descendant of person B. PS: Haplogroups used in population genetics studies (that companies such as 23andme use for their commercial kits) are not the same tool used to demonstrate descent in forensic genetics.

The whole description of the invasions is very similar to the fall of Rome. Barbarian groups start arising and they appear at first as mercenaries inside the Empire. Then they become more numerous and finally the horde emerges and attacks (in case of Rome it happened when Attila the Hun appeared). To compound the damage, order in the periphery collapses and other smaller groups emerge and take the provinces for themselves (various flavours of Habiru, Shasu, Arameans, Anatolian tribes, Libyan/Berber tribes, proto-Arabs and more). Entire barbarian groups are also settled inside imperial territories and eventually set-up kingdoms of their own. In time, the invaders either settle their new lands and create new kingdoms that initially are very rudimentary or disperse entirely and disappear from history.

Age of Bronze dev here. The statement about the land engagements between Ramesses III and the SP being less mentioned than those at Sea is incorrect. Most Ramesses III depictions of conflicts with the Sea Peoples are representative for multiple engagements. Medinet Habu and the Harris papyrus both detail the engagements in Canaan and allude and directly attest to the defeat of the Sea Peoples at Djahy and the Philistines in other engagements. Also, the number of Egyptian losses would be a weak argument for a speculative lack of mention given their tendency to greatly exaggerate the totality of their victories on many other occasions.

Hi, thanks so much for your comment, I sincerely appreciate hearing your views and discussing such topics. After reading your comment I went back through both the Medinet Habu inscriptions and the Harris Papyrus (Breasted trans.) to doublecheck. Here’s my opinion: In the video I say “the details of the land battle are all but absent from the inscriptions, save for the fact that the Egyptians ultimately won the encounter, or perhaps, series of encounters.” I tend to believe this is true based on the following - while Ramesses III does make many mentions of his victories on land, he doesn’t tell us much else. The main lines referencing any details from the land battle(s) that I found are on the second pylon where it’s written “The king, rich in might, at his going forth to the North, great in fear, dread of the Asiatics, sole lord, skilled in hand, conscious of his might, like Baal, valiant in strength, ready for battle against the Asiatics, marching afar in his advance, confident - smiting tens of thousands in heaps in the space of an hour. He overwhelms the combatants like fire, causing all those who confront him to become ashes.” This is very little when compared to what his scribes have written about the sea campaign, not just what I quoted in the video but also on several other sections of the pylon inscription. The Medinet Habu inscriptions do mention and depict other wars that occurred in Canaan and the Levant (such as against the city of Amor and the Edomite campaign) but these happened years after the great battles with the Sea Peoples. As for the Harris Papyrus, the reference to the Sea Peoples battles that found is the following: “I extended all the boundaries of Egypt, I overthrew those who invaded them from their lands. I slew the Denyen in their isles, the Tjeker and the Peleset were made ashes. The Sherden and the Weshesh of the sea, they were made as those that exist not, taken captive at one time, brought as captives to Egypt…” Still, I feel that this is lacking on details compared to other texts and inscription where Ramesses III (or his scribes) have been more forthcoming. I understand that there may be several opinions on this - I think many Egyptologists often compare Ramesses III to Ramesses II and are of the opinion that had the land battle in Canaan been a resounding victory, he would have let posterity know similar to how Ramesses II boasted of his victory/stalemate at Kadesh. Again, these are just my opinions and based off what I’ve read mostly from T. Wilkinson, E. Cline, Shaw and others as well as my understanding of the Medinet Habu and Harris Papyrus texts. @@HistorywithCy I think the long and well documented reign of Ramesses II causes some recency bias in the sense that we expect RIII to follow suit. The details given for his engagements with the sea peoples are exactly like those from records of many pharaohs’ campaigns in Canaan throughout the 18th and 19 dynasty. The Merneptah stele being a good example, in the way it lists the details events but doesn’t delve into detail. Ramesses III had a very eventful reign and does a good job of documenting his crowning achievements. I think it’s a much safer assumption that the engagements were simply considered less notable relative to something like the battle of the delta which was probably most notable for being the decisive engagement rather than being notably more successful than others. Especially when as mentioned before, the Egyptians had no qualms with turning close calls into magnificent victories. Or when you consider the much greater number of records related the battle of kadesh than the subsequent engagements at Dapur (twice) and Tunip where Ramesses II defeated the Hittites.

I saw a documentary on Swedish TV that claimed drought brought more and more people to piracy disrupting important trade followed by earthquakes wrecking fortifications all over the region. They showed evidence of drought during a long period matching the period and earthquakes also matching the period. It’s not the first or last time people on the move created chaos and reshape the world order. Hope I’m long dead when the current climate crisis starts moving entirely populations towards more fertile lands. People in the future: who was the land people who burned down the highly technological world order? Answer: everybody else.
