This is a fun one to revisit from Pixel Dan. I don't know of too many other channels that ever took a look at this set. This set is just such an absolute oddity among TMNT products. It was an experiment in moving toward more of the collector demographic, and it seems like it failed at the time, because Playmates never did it again with any of the other Turtles. The belt missing from the Movie Star Leo was always so weird and unexplainable to me. Also, the lower leg portions of the Fast Forward Leo are backwards, as you can see that his calves are out front. Strange.

If you look at every ninja turtle action figure face, they generally have the same face. Donnie always has a closed mouth, Leo has a toothy frown, Mikey is always smiling, and raph always has a snarl

When you think about it, the 2007 Tmnt figure was the most articulated figure they ever made besides the Classics, And knowing how they are today, Cheaping out on most figures, they were probably lying about that.

You know what would have made this set even better would be if each figure had an individual interlocking stand. That way you could use an extra stand for the missing figure, and if they did another box set for each of the other 3, you could arrange them chronologically instead of just by character. But that would have cost extra.

The original vintage release has a leg tooling difference, as well as the 2003 figure. This was likely done to make them fit onto the bases.

Playmates cant just take somebody’s figure. And no they would not be able to make a mold off of 1 figure. They would need the original mold, and again that got destroyed.

Also missing on this lineup is the Leonardo from the super-mutants anime, the dragon armor and the super mutant transformation, still I remember seeing this at TRU, I regret not getting it.

Actually, it looks just like the original, but shows how bad his facial expression is. Michaelangelo was the best looking of the original Movie Star Turtles figures as his bandana rested on his shoulders and his face had a neutral expression. The thing that most annoys me is his lack of belt.

The display set up is really great but honestly I have no interest in collecting this set. Since I have been a collector from the beginning, I have all of these figures except for the newest movie Leo because I can't stand that movie. What I really would like is a rerelease of the original Movie Star Turtle figures like Playmates is doing with the original 80s toy line. The fact that Leo doesn't come with a belt is an extra drawback for me with this set.

omg i gotta have this! i really hoping for a Michelangelo set. So amazing and unexpected from playmates to do something like this. The display deck is a great idea for playmates to maybe even release simple display decks for their current line. Maybe like a display deck of an alley way or like a long building balcony. As an older collector i dont necessarily want to buy a huge turtle house to display my figures. Just an idea.

Toon Leo was excluded to make an even set of 8, and was Re released again in the 2020s. Supermutant version may have needed Takara approval. As mentioned the 2k7 mold was likely destroyed. The Cyber Samurai version could be used to represent Archie and the Jim Lee version to represent Image.

The missing Movie Star Leo's belt is really bad, but otherwise is a really great collector's item, specially to get some of the more rare ones like the Next Mutation and the Fast Forward versions. As a little fact of nitpicking, I'd add that if I'm not mistaken, the Next Mutation ones were also rubbery like the Moviestar ones, and this pack's version seems to be hard plastic aswell; and also, the Fast Forward's weapons looked like they were made with transparent colored plastic on the original ones, and these versions are flat colored. Nitpicking, I know. Still, a great chance to have a really cool add to the collection, the display bases are awesome. I hope they made a Raphael release too!

This is a interesting cool piece. I grew up with the original cartoon trough to the next mutation show... was not a fan of the animation in the newer shows so never checked them out... I have mixed feelings on the new micheal bay look but the movie was not too bad... wish I still had all my vintage figures had a huge collection, just starting to collect them back now as an adult

I will think that it would be better if instead of displaying the turtles on a single line you can display them in columns by forming a mini shelf or at least if you can separate the each of the bases to make your own customized line of turtles, to show each of the turtles in groups (in the first line the 4 from the mirage, then the 80's cartoon version and so on)

Great review, I wish I had the space to display these, but honestly, I saw this set in stores and I guess I'm a bit OCD but I cannot get past the glaring omission of Movie Star Leos belt, he looks naked without it...If Playmates meant for this to be for collectors, they had to know we'd be all over the missing belt :( OH well....I guess I'll just give my money to Mondo for their amazing 1/6 turtles :D

Did they do the History of Donatello, Raphael and Michaelangelo box sets and did you review them? How much was this? Always love the original playmate toys Leonardo as well as the other turtles. Movie star version was rubber based which was cool because it was the first TMNT movie action figure. I had a Leo.

Very interesting set! It's funny they planned out connectability. All you'll have to do is...clear a space. A super, SUPER long space. Like, a whole wall! On the other hand, if I were ONLY collecting TMNT, I'd say this would be worth clearing the space for. Weird thing is that, awhile ago, I might have been annoyed with them being screwed in, but I actually like the idea! I mean, you can get them out if you want, but if you don't - no worries about them falling off the display! I also like that you can separate the bases as well, though I feel like they should have all had those connector pegs rather than being screwed together. (On the other hand, it's not like you'll want to mess up the order they're in). Sad to see Movie Leo doesn't have his belt or spots! Perhaps that's another factory mold problem? Can't see any other reason why they'd skip it. They also made the Fast Forward Leo without the clear blue swords, I see. Beyond that, if I had the room: I'd say this is a really cool set! I might - maybe, just maybe - break for a History or Raph set. I mean, I've already almost got a history of Raph just from my collecting habits, but I wouldn't mind the display.

The Henson movie Leo didn't have the spots on the actual costume, which is what Playmates was going for in response to Neca's far more screen accurate version, because the spots on the original release figure were exclusive to the toyline adapting the films, not unlike the toyline of the 1987 cartoon Turtles not entirely replicating the look of the animation due to it being the inaugural transition from cell-shaded 2D cartoon drawn by Murakami (later recognized for his work on the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon)-Wolf-Swenson to a three-demensional posable figure trying to recapture the asthetics of that campy source material. Later incartions improved on accuracy as much as Playmates was willing to afford, although to do so, they skimped on genuine replay value, since even these Collector Edition sets are still inherently toys & toys are meant to be "well-loved"/played with, unless they're being used strictly for diorama display purposes.

Good review but I would NEVER buy this for $90.. I have my turtles displayed similar to this already but the missing belt and the paint is a huge let down if meant for collectors.. People who dont have the originals might enjoy this though.. Why is playmates so cheap now? They used to make quality action figures but now they skimp out on paint and accessories..

WOW. For my 2012/13 Leonardo, the eyes are even smaller with less white. Makes him look much angrier. Maybe it is because I got them from the store; 5 Below, which for whatever reason happened to have the "Giochi Preziosi" words/logo. Apparently meaning they are the Italian released versions. Not sure how the over flow made it to these stores, but got all four Turtles for $20.00 total. Not bad.

although painstaking and expensive I'm pretty sure anything that is destroyed can be restored or recreated if you have enough info on it.. I mean if they can recreate priceless historic monuments shattered during war-times etc I imagine they could find a way to remake that mold (or get someone to make a new one) : it would never be "perfect" (just as you can't remake a historic item "perfectly") but it'd be better than nothing.
