In this series we will discuss the changes that were made in the 1970s that launched not only the no poo movement, but the desire to return to an easier hair cleansing method as well. The 1970s resulted in two major innovations in the hair care world - suspended polymers and silicones. Let's discuss the good, the bad, and the Farrah Fawcett. Because she's awesome.

Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

I’m loving the deep research done into this subject. My hair is perfect, but my colleagues think it’s a dirty practice to wash my hair once a week. I have used Castile Soap to wash and rum water to rinse for as long as I can remember. Thanks for sharing this! I’m passing it on.

As an athletic child growing up in the late 80s and 90s I absolutely had to wash my hair every day. I was a competitive gymnast covered in chalk, diver covered in chlorine, and I practiced Judo and was covered in mat sweat. Plus I live/d in sunny, humid south Florida. I am a soap hobbiest and use all my own soaps ... but my shampoo needs to be super mild because shower & wash my hair 2x a day! 😮 I have thin, curly hair and I don't like my scalp feeling gross or they way my hair smells after sleeping on it all night (and we keep our house cool 24/7). I use leave-in conditioner and argon oil to style. I actually learned to LOVE my curls ... but there's no skipping my normal shower routine. I must wash daily 😂

This set of videos are truly interesting and have given me a lot to think about. I think I will make all of your shampoo bars as my family of four all have different hair needs and see what each of us prefers after experimenting with them. Thanks so much for these different deep dives and recipes.

V05 hot oil treatment 😂 The only time I was washing my hair every day was when I was a mechanic and getting oil, antifreeze, brake dust, welding slag, etc. in my hair on the daily. 🙃

My mom had those V05 hot oil things for my entire childhood. She wouldn’t let me touch them, so they must have been fancy.

@@MrsSoapAndClay they were expensive for that time. My hair and scalp was so oily until I hit about 35-40 so I never used it. My hair used to give me horrible acne on my back and face. Now… my hair is in the “normal” category regarding oiliness.

Hi, this series is very interesting and I have learnt a lot from your past videos too because people are very unaware about oils and what different oils can do. I’m learning how to make soap and my own products because 1. It encourages me to be active in my responsibilities in environmental issues such as minimising waste, especially using plastics and damaging products. 2. I used to work in childcare and nut products as a general rule are prohibited because of children with allergies. I’m aware of that so I do not take any nut products to work, (mainly food products which by law they need to label the potential of it being contaminated by nuts and other triggering products). However in the beauty industry they do not have any warning labels of any allergens in their products that could cause a reaction. I found that out the hard way when I had a girl playing with my hair started to show some mild allergic reactions, the coordinator asked everyone if they brought any nuts to work and we didn’t. I was puzzled and was aware from another work place where they advised staff not to use any products with almond oil in it as it may cause allergic reactions. When I went home I checked a new shampoo and conditioner I bought and used that week and in the ingredients it listed macadamia nut as one of their ingredient.. I stopped using this product especially when I knew I was going to work and started checking every ingredient of every product on the market and most had macadamia or almond in their ingredients which prompted me to start making my own products to eliminate any risks 3. I have curly hair, I’m a mix of African/European/Asian. Curly hair by nature is meant to protect your scalp from the elements and there’s lots of products out there that are not suited to curly hair. And the ones that are have these numerous amounts of products to put on your hair to supposedly stop the frizz and cost a fortune. Basically I’d be broke and going against my minimalist environment stance if I follow the todays curly hair trends. I have learnt so far especially from you, you don’t have to go too fancy on shampoo/wash off products because what you need from that product is for it to cleanse. conditioning products however which partially sits on your hair, needs to have better combinations of oil to create the results you want for your hair. And to also understand the ingredients in products, what they do or supposed to do, to be able to make better choices.

I agree! I'm of European decent (Italian / Swedish) and I struggle with keeping my curly hair frizz free in humid south Florida. I use a leave-in conditioning cream and style with a quarter size dollop of argon oil. But ... I haven't been able to create my own recipes at home yet. I make all my own soaps as a hobby, but they prove too harsh on my scalp since I wash my hair 1-2x per day based on my active lifestyle. I cannot stand the feel of dirty hair after getting out of a clean shower. We go primitive camping 2x a year and even though I shower off or go lake swimming to rinse my product-free hair, I feel absolutely disgusting not shampooing daily lol. Also, I have 6 children and each one has a child in their classroom with nut allergies or sensitivities. Unfortunately, I never considered it could be an issue for others in hair care products! I'm going to double check the ingredients going forward. Interesting catch!

@@yonikki have you looked into using clay to cleanse your hair and possibly using it to style your hair so it absorbs excess moisture? Google has some info if you’re interested.

You had me at the 70's, Farrah Fawcett and Charlies Angels 🥰🥰🥰 We all aspired to have their hair. Showers became difficult to actully shower in due to so many complicated Hair products clogging up the space. (I remember my Step Dad having this very complaint back in the day. 🤣🤣) Our poor environment thou with all the plastic bottles. Love this series, Feel like I just had a luvly juvly trip down memory lane. Always love your work Mrs S&C.

I washed my hair almost every day when I was working (retired now) but I was born in the 50's and at that time I washed it about one a week but I had to but my hair in GIANT curlers and sit under my portable hair dried LoL. But the reason was my hair is very curly and frizzy and if I don't wash it I look like a witch! Sometimes I just use conditioner and that works too. I have been expirementing with syndex bars and soap bars made with tallow and trying to find one that works for me. Not completely happy with either yet. My daughter who has very long curly hair loves the tallow bar.(but she doesn't wash every day) I'm afaird to use it. I also make a conditioning bar that I love but my hair is very dry and thin lbut my daughter hates because its too conditioning! Go figure!

Do you use conditioner if you are using soap bars to wash your hair? Just curious if only soap is needed or if it still needs additional hydration on the ends. I know on the video about the curly hair shampoo bar you said that your daughter uses conditioner, so I was wondering if the others needed it to and if so what do you do?
