Actually, the nightmare part on SH8 is brilliant. It actually happens when you have nightmares, running away from an unclear threat but you can't seem to escape at all. It hurts in the dream yet you don't know why.

One thing that I love about the Silent Hill series is that all the main titles seem to have elements of a tragic love story. While no two games follow the same formula, the franchise has made a habit of using differing forms of love as the basis for the protagonists' motivations, inner demons and how they are affected in their journeys through Silent Hill. *SH 1 & Shattered Memories: Harry Mason's love for his missing daughter.* *SH 2: James's love for his dead wife.* *SH 3: Heather's desire to avenge her adoptive father's death.* *SH 4: Henry starts off fighting for his own survival, but develops feelings for Emily that make him fight to help her.* *Origins: Travis's desire to make sure the girl he saved is okay, despite having no relation to her.* *Homecoming: Alex's search for his missing brother, very much like the first.* *Downpour: Murphy Pendleton's challenge of overcoming suffering caused by the death of his son.* I do hope they don't use this theme to the point of becoming stale but it is a great aspect of the storylines and, to me, one of the best things about the Silent Hill games. Would you enter Silent Hill to save someone you loved?

The Silent Hills I've played... Silent Hill 1: I couldn't play this game, at first. The camera angles scared me to death because I couldn't see what was coming and I quite playing after the first encounter with the child like monsters... but returned and played after SH2.. second favourite. Silent Hill 2: My favourite of all time. Amazing protagonist and story, with eerie settings and great monster designs and to top it off, the sound tracks amazing. Silent Hill 3:.. I truly found out what "Survival Horror" means... a game were you're better off running for your life. Again, great story... but it did take me a while to get used to a female protagonist, but her story made it easy, after a while. Silent Hill 4: The Room... The Silent Hill game.. probably the only game, that has left me feeling disturbed. Personally can't see why this gets so much hate, because I really enjoyed it. Silent Hill: Homecoming.. Tough one, The monster designs are great and the story line fits in well... But the combat made the game less "survival". The boss designs redeemed this flaw, Scarlet being my favourite. Silent Hill: Downpour... Good Storyline and Protagonist. The Settings were pretty eree and the music topped it off... but the lack of monsters and design put into the monsters... not to mention the lack of bosses you fight (2, if I remember).. left this game feeling a bit "meh". Silent Hill HD:.... What The F***.... don't buy this, buy and play the originals.. it feels as though someone's walked though Silent Hill, with a Mop and gave the place a good spring clean.. while lifting a lot of the fog. I'm already looking forward to the next SH, but I hope it's developed by someone who isn't Western.. Mainly Japanese and has experience with classic games. If it's another Western developer.. please let the serious die in piece.

I love that this video just presents the games without biased commentary. It really shows the rapid decline of the atmospheric pressure that was Silent Hill's signature in the beginning, and the gradual transition from psychological horror to another westernized gore fest. Well done.

Silent Hill..For me the best survival horror title ever...Still remember when i was 17 years old that first title came out ...I was shocked,,,Great atmosphere,monsters,music,scarry moments...A brilliant game.Silent Hill 1,2 and Resident Evil 1 are my all time fav games.

"Shattered Memories" is a sort-of re-imagining/reboot of the first game. It takes the same basic story, but then spins it in an entirely new direction. It's actually a great game, albeit different from the original.

My Personal Fav are: SH4: Ghost leave me mortified I couldn't even finish Luigi's mansion I never really got annoyed with the ghosts so I felt this was their most disturbing title that and the music is my absolute fav Note: Oddly enough, I found Fatal Frame very meh in terms of Horror not sure why.... SH1/DP: These two are tied in that some of the water imagery in DP was out of this world (get it?) but the only scary thing about this game honestly was the shadow Doll and the Library in which it resided Sidequests were fun Silent hill 1 was rather fun, but the creatures lacked the debt the future games had although the shadow stalkers scared the shit outta me I haven't played the others these are just outta the 3 I've played

You pretty much nailed it... Except I would say Silent Hill 3 is THE scariest of them all. Definitely the most disturbing. Also, you don't want to play Origins. It completely breaks the timeline and contradicts the story of the first game... And there was always snow in Silent Hill but Shattered Memories kind of took it overboard and the lack of combat and fog is disappointing.

Because games 1-4 were all made by the original Team Silent but they disbanded and every Silent Hill game after that was made by different developers. The problem with the newer ones is that they change the formula a bit and tend to go off the Silent Hill movie for there versions of Pyramid Head (who shouldn't exist anywhere except for SH2) and the nurses, also they change the town as well. There just very different but there not all that bad either.

my favorite 3 are .....SH Downpour (entertaining....great visuals ....and i love the story and the prisoners stuff ..) SH 4 the Room ( The scariest SH in my opinion ...and those ghost dogs are haunting my dreams ) and SH 3 ( my favorite one ...great main protagonist ..the story is interesting ..and the cast of characters is great too + i love the Mall level ...i just love Malls :D )

That's totally true. The original Silent Hill developers (SH 1-3, even 4) were influenced by many many many and I mean really many works from other artists, the majority of them american. They are Japanese and created excellent Japanese products with American looks and Japanese “feelings”. So the problem isn't exactly that SH isn't being developed by Japanese people this last decade, it's just it isn't being developed with the correct knowledge and focus... I hope this changes already.

Silent Hill 1: Very eerie and surreal. Its plot was interesting, yet anti climatic. The game is still very scary to this day. Silent Hill 2: Absolutely stunning. If silent hill 3 could be described as red, then silent hill 2 is blue. It has a truly beautiful storyline and an epic finale. It also has one of the most phenomenal soundtracks ever in game. Silent Hill 3: Very tense. Unlike its predecessors, it's pure terror. Its story is interesting, yet nowhere near as powerful as Silent Hill 2.

I agree, Resident Evil was very cool but has strayed far from the horror element over the years. It's more of an action survival scifi series now than a horror franchise, though some parts of RE 6 did briefly go back to that scary feel.

While the silent hill movies are bad adaptations of the games, i still think they are good. I also find it better to think of it as an action/suspense movie rather than a horror movie. (i also am making a guess that the next movie might be about downpour, since at the end of revelation you saw a prison bus go by after they left silent hill)

Silent Hill Homecoming was the FIRST silent Hill game I have every played and I liked it due to the fact that I have never played a horror game before. I couldn't sleep for a week. Then I found out about 2 and 3. I find it amazing how good the graphics were for them since they came out in 2002 and 2003. And the story lines for them, it's just deep. The only silent hill games I haven't played were 1 and Shattered Memories - also I never beat origins. I should try 1 but as for Shattered Memories. I didn't like the fact that you couldn't fight the monsters, thats part of the fun and horror. I still wish Team Silent would get back together to make ONE more extremely good SH game - Better than 2 and 3 - which would be hard.

Silent Hill: Homecoming was actually very good and there is a perfectly good reason why "Pyramid Head" was there. 1. IT'S NOT EVEN PYRAMID HEAD HIS NAME IS THE BOOGEYMAN 2. serves a different purpose 3. DIFFERENT DESIGN, HEAD IS NOT EVEN A PYRAMID 4. similar clothes? pyramid head's original clothes are the clothes of the silent hill order executioners...

I love all of the Silent Hill games. (Save that last one you showed. What the hell, super powers? Fuck that.) Though I have to admit, after the third, I didn't care for them as much, and I hated how they initially hinted that Shattered Memories was actually a part of the series and storyline, but it turns out to be an Alternate Universe thing. Feh. The original Silent Hill is still my favorite of them all, even though the voice acting lacked the emotion the characters themselves showed.

A lot of people would say Homecoming is where the series died but I honestly thought it was alright, even if it did try to snuggle up to the god awful movies, but Downpour is literally where everything started to fall pretty rapidly. It wasn't Silent Hill, it literally felt like some shitty town with piss poor monster designs and slap dash story that couldn't be further from the fantastic plots of the original four. As for Book of Memories.. Has anyone actually bought that game? Who looked at the trailers and said "this is what I want from Silent Hill"? What a fucking disaster.

Im not going to lie, I have played all of the Silent hills from when i was 4 when 1 came out, to now with Downpour (Dont have vita so no BoM) and I love all of them. Im not going to lie about hating all of the non Team silent ones, because I dont. Just because other people hate a game, doesnt mean you have to aswell, and if you ask me, if nobody knew that Team silent had nothing to do with Silent hill 5-8 then I bet not many people would be hating, and would probably praise the changes.

I loved the first 4 but after that I feel they fell short. Even if Homecoming was terrible I think Downpour was the worst because there aren't even any monsters. If its the same town there should be the same monsters, right?
