Great decision for BMW to design the X5 with a unibody chassis. They had a clear vision for the X5 and were not distracted by off-roading capability. This was the 90s and the concept of an SUV that's more on-road focus was still in its infancy, and all the marketing for Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and even the Lexus RX was showing off off-roading capabilities. The idea of a sports car SUV hadn't been done before, so the X5 was a massive achievement as it answered the needs of customers without them knowing exactly what they wanted-the performance of a 5 Series with the space of an estate, and the height of an SUV without being overweight. The Porsche Cayenne was still 3 - 4 years away and the Range Rover Sport later around 2007, so the BMW X5 was that advanced. I think the concern was that there wasn't a market for an on-road SUV without off-roading capabilities. Now an on-road unibody SUV, also known as the crossovers, are common, they have replaced the station wagon and minivan, think Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. And the sports SUV market that BMW was so ahead of is now thriving with the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Maserati also making high performance sports SUVs. And it all started with BMW X5.

@ 8:48, someone screwed up the script he read. There has NEVER been a V-6 engine.
