My all time favorite ride at Disneyland, and to think Disneyland is the only park that has it. Personally I know all the complaints about how rough a ride it is, and no doubt it is. But remember this is the original steel coaster so you cannot not touch it for historical reasons in my opinion. But I do want to make a suggestion when riding it for those who find it to rough OR have a bad back like myself. I have figured out a way to ride it without it hurting my back and in turn makes it more enjoyable. Simply sit up in the seat and ride it like your riding a horse. Its sitting back into the seat were the turbulent movement gets transferred back into your body. Seriously it works. It is also perfectly safe since the original bobsleds the front rider did not have a back to rest on plus you have seat belts anyhow. Excellent video.

You forgot to mention that the matterhorn bobsleds was the first roller coaster in the world to feature a tubular track. It's a landmark of history just for that reason

Went a couple weeks ago. Harold is great the motion really takes you back. The ride is still incredibly rough. It is hard to get in the right atmosphere when the next turn jerks you viciously.

Great Video... The thing that makes the Matterhorn Bobsled Attraction so unique to me is that the fact there is only ONE of them and Walt rode it :-)

Yes, but isn't Expedition Everest really an updated version of the Matterhorn? With the Yeti a stand in for Harold? And in reality, WDW's Space Mountain is really a copy of the Matterhorn, being a 2 tracked bobsled coaster with parallel lifts. It just has a different layout, and is fully enclosed.

I think it’s so funny how people are so obsessed with this. Some employees literally tacked a basketball hoop to the side of a stairwell in a break area, and suddenly there is a legend of a mysterious gymnasium hidden in the mountain. Lol.

Sorry, but no mention of how the original mountain was hollow? Or that when they filled it in with caverns, there used to be a big opening at the top of the lift hill with a view of the park? Or the basketball court?!

Amazing footage of this historic ride in test mode. Wow. It's just a major treat to see the ride in action before the exterior was added. It's the Arrow Development team that actually made this groundbreaking ride possible. Impressive.

Scott Nelson Arrow was an insanely innovative company, other than the first steel coaster they also created the first successful coaster to go upside-down (Corkscrew at Knott's Berry Farm now Corkscrew at Silverwood), first coaster with 3, 4, 5, and 7 inversions, the first hyper coaster (Magnum XL 200 at Cedar Point), and the first 4D coaster (X2 at SFMM).

I once heard cast members used to call Lookout Mountain "Make Out Mountain" due to all the couples that would find some privacy among the bushes. It makes one wonder how many families heritage began there.

Sadly, we're quickly approaching the point where it would be cheaper to bulldoze the mountain and rebuild it, rather than fix it.

I have this for years and it was a much smoother ride back in the old days (i.e. 1970s, 80s and 90s). We aren't sure whether the renovations have caused the rougher ride or the new ride vehicles. But there is a definite difference. Anyone who follows Disney KZbinrs who ride for the first time, the comments are almost the same; jerky, bumpy and painful at times.

starleet2001 It's a mixture of both, the track is 60 years old and the new cars with the seats are higher up and thus cause you to jerk around more since your center of gravity is higher than what the track was designed for.

Theres also a nod for Frank Wells in the section where you said its a nod to the old bobsleds. The nod to Frank Wells, who worked for Disney and died in an accident, is on a crate that says Wells Expedition I think. He was known to climb all sorts of mountains.

The matterhorn was open inside until the 1978 renovation. It really was open, with the structural beams clearly visible. I remember being able to look down into the depths of the interior.

AMagicProduction, the Matterhorn is one of my favorite rides at disneyland!!! Do you know how disneyland made Harold in 1978 and the materials they used to make it because I want to make my own Harold and put it in my playroom bathroom to scare guests that come to my house!!! If you know how disneyland built Harold, then put the steps in your response with numbers on the left please. Also if you know the materials they used please put a list of the materials as well!!! the Ducksprings company 2 While Expedition Everest definitely has some similarities to the Matterhorn, Epcot planned to build an almost identical version of Disneyland’s Matterhorn in a proposed Switzerland pavilion. Unfortunately that never came to fruition.

I went to that ride in 2017, and despite looking beautiful from the distance, the ride itself is old, bumpy and not thrilling at all. After going to Expedition Everest, the Matterhorn is complete rubbish...

Alex Arce in 2015 they gave Matterhorn a makeover making the track smoother they took out most on the track from arrow it is still rough but not as much
