Hardly. "The war that made him famous was actually a lot more complicated than it first appears." Then he spends less than 4 minutes on the "complicated" war. Historia Civilis this ain't.

Important to note. Marius was Caesars uncle in law (his fathers, sisters, husband/his aunts husband).

Ever thought of doing more on Alex the Great? Great vid!
@AncientHistoryGuy2 жыл бұрын
eventually yes, I went on a deep dive about 8 years ago on alexander the great, which lasted about a year and a half. Tbh I'm a little burnt out from it still, i had so many books and documentaries on him it was ridiculous. but yeah at some point i will do more vids on him.

I don't think he was "planning" to start a civil war, if he was he would bring more men, I think he just go back so he could have elected as consol again. He was a very smart person so he would have guessed there was a change of civil war but I don't think he believed it was likely but at that point as he said "Alea iacta est" or "the die has been cast"

from my study of caesar as a person, he's very forward thinking. You can never know exactly what the man was planning, but i don't think he became dictator by accident. I think he always knew where he was going. Either way one way or another by this time the republic was bound to collapse into anarchy, the reforms started by Tiberius basically meant that sooner or later there was going to be a big civil war between the conservatives and the liberals. Marius and Sulla were just the powder keg, and caesar and pompey were the final explosions.

0:43 Gallaecia was only conquered during the reign of Augustus, so it wasnt conquered yet during the Gallic wars (Julius Caeser himself fought a battle there during his governing in Hispania) The Vascones however, had already surrendered to Rome over a century ago.

Is that the symbol of the rebel alliance on the shields of the gauls? :P
@AncientHistoryGuy2 жыл бұрын
you know what I hadn't noticed that but now you've said that I'm totally going to be putting the phoenix squadron symbol on the shields whenever I'm talking about rebels.

What a trooper. Caesar knew what he had to do to reach his dreams. Go to Fr*nce. That takes real willpower.
