They dont call sandwiches in general "po boy". That is just a specific sandwich.

Po' boy has shrimp, doesn't it?
@nola305

You are DEFINITELY RIGHT, à poboy IS a specific sandwich from New Orleans, it's made using a New Orleans French bread preferably Lidenheimer (French bread) with ANY kind of meat you care to use, not only seafood or roast beef. I've noticed that a few Philadelphia sandwich shops call their shrimp sub sandwiches "poboys" which is a misnomer, they use the same bread for hoagies and cheese steaks but not FRENCH bread.

@@apictureoffunction you can use ANY kind of meat on a NEW ORLEANS poboy, not just shrimp, I think that you should Google the origin of the New Orleans poboy (sandwich) so you'll have a 'clear' understanding of what this particular sandwich is! 😉

Listen.... I'm a philadelphian. Only the idiots say wawa has good hoagies. Its low grade cheap meat. People somehow convince themselves it was good because its fast, available and cheap. Its like saying McDonald's has good hamburgers... then you eat a good hamburger.

Born and raised in New Jersey and I have always had mayo on my Italian subs. Don't know why it's such a travesty tho? lol The absolute best subs came from the local mom & pop delis throughout the area. And Blimpies made an amazing sub. My understanding is that the Blimpies in Hoboken on the main Avenue was the first Blimpies before it became a franchise, but I really can't confirm that. Now I live in Florida and Publix support market makes one Hell of sub ,... for a supermarket it's pretty good.

In Philly, sandwiches are taken seriously for appeal to adult taste buds. In other cities, sandwiches are just something between sliced bread for children or teens. When other cities make an adult sandwich, they over think it instead of letting it come from the heart. The experience of eating their sandwiches is "look at how delicate and sophisticated I am". But, the experience of eating a Philly sandwich is (a) oh yum, (b) oh my God, (c) no one should see what I am doing to this thing, (d) I need a cigarette. This fits all ethnics, not just the Italian sandwiches.

My Dad introduced me to the art of the sandwich when I was but a wee lad with the first lesson. Anybody can eat a sandwich but it takes an artist to make a good sandwich. And yes, having done battle on many fields over the best cheesesteak, we take our sandwiches VERY seriously here! Growing up within walking distance of Chink's, Greenman's deli, the old Yorty's and more recently Fink's, Cheesesteaks, Hoagies and pulled pork are in the blood! Not to mention some amazing bakeries for the bestest freshest breads. After some travels the one truly amazing sammich we're missing here is the Muffeleta from my other adopted hometown of New Orleans.

I kind of agree but I also disagree. The east coast has had a large influx of European immigrants so of course that created deli culture which resulted in sandwich culture by default. You can get great sandwiches in every major city in America, it’s just that the bread at mom and pop shops is usually a little better on the east coast due to the legacy of Italian and European immigrant bakers from the past.

It’s perfectly acceptable. One reason is because it’s technically not Italian. Also many Italian Americans break the rules anyway…..Also, Mayo does exist in Italy. Many Italian Americans became disconnected with Italy after the 1950s so they will get their perceptions of Italy incorrect from time to time.

@@tbone9603 Mayo is fine in addition to oil and vinegar. You won’t even notice the Mayo. It’s just something light in the background because the sandwich is already busy with so many other ingredients. I used to work in a hoagie shop and tried many variations. Loved the content, would love to spread the good word of the Hoagie. The delivery, however, left something to be desired... Overall it's seems very outdated, with clunky animations, and voice over work that's acted with the most sarcastic tone of voice. The content of this video has a lot of potential, look for some outside help from the younger generations, this type of thing would be exponentially more likely to be shared by loyal Philadelphians such as my self if it were presented in less of an almost outlandish way

Total disrespect to DiCostanza's... (as the story goes) Back in 1925, the family had a grocery business at Chester’s West End. According to local legend and as the DiCostanza's recollect: A group of people were playing cards in a pool hall about four doors away from the grocery. One of the men walked to the grocer to get some cigarettes. “Catherine “mom” DiCostanza , was cooking in the back kitchen and the aroma penetrated through the store,” The person asked for a sandwich and wanted it loaded up with everything they had in the deli case. He received a Vienna loaf rolled down with olive oil and sprinkled with oregano and salt, filled with prosciutto, capicola, salami, ham cudighino, provolone cheese, tomato and onion. Then she added a few sweet and hot peppers. A wile latter the man came back with is friends and said, "Hay Mom can you make us more sandwiches like the one you made me?" Mom replied (in broken English) OK (to the men sounded like Hoagie) and that is how the word for the sandwich developed. Today, DiCostanza’s is a sandwich shop that should have been at the top of the (bad) list. As a local I can tell you there are many better Hoagies at places other than provided at the end of this vid... BTW the piss poor reporter miss Zep or Zeppelin sandwich... a simpler variation, still available at many local sandwich shops today (

A zep’s roll is slightly wider than a hoagie’s and It contains one meat only: cooked salami. Aficionados rate the quality of salami by its quantity of visible peppercorns, It does share hoagie components of provolone cheese, tomatoes, onions, and oregano, but it never has lettuce and its oil component (no mayo!) comes from peppers in oil... yummy Try Eves in Norristown, PA
